Chapter 6 - We're Counting On You
He had a small amount of money left. It was what was left of the travel allowance given to him by the priest.
However, if he used it, he would be penniless.
In his current situation, he didn’t want to use it.
After all, he didn’t know what he might need it for.
If he used it now and found himself without money when he needed it most, it could literally be a matter of life and death.
“… I need to save. I don’t have any leeway.”
Kikori reasoned with himself as he walked and finally reached the gate.
This was the reason Nirgen was called a Defense City.
The city was the line of defense that protected humans from hordes of monsters.
The only gate leading to the monster-infested “contaminated area.”
As he arrived at the gate known as the Hero’s Gate, he saw people who looked like adventurers and various stalls selling to them.
“Welcome, welcome! We have many holy swords blessed at the well-known Grand Cathedral of Sanctel! If you don’t buy now, when will you?”
“Highest quality potions, adventurer discounts available!”
From clearly essential items to suspicious ones, there was a wide range of items.
Could holy swords really be sold at such stalls?
In his previous life, holy swords were supposed to be worth much more…
Even in this situation, the knowledge from his previous life crept into his thoughts and became a nuisance. Kikori reflexively clenched his fist.
He reminded himself not to think or say unnecessary things.
Keeping this in mind once again, Kikori kept walking.
“Recruiting a priest who can use detoxification! We have a warrior and a mage!”
“I am Acht, a warrior from the western city of Azaga! Would anyone like to join me?”
“Here we have a ranger and a priest! We are looking for a tank!”
Voices of people seeking companions to venture into the contaminated area can be heard.
Some seemed to be calling out to others, but naturally, no one called out to Kikori.
Well, even if someone did, he would probably suspect some kind of scam…
“Hey, stop right there. Are you an adventurer? Show me your adventurer’s ID.”
As he reached the gate, a guard stopped him.
“Yes, I’m Kikori.”
When Kikori showed his bronze adventurer’s ID, the guard nodded and looked him over.
“Your weapon is… an axe? A beginner, huh?”
“Yes, it’s my first time today.”
“I see. The further you go into the contaminated area, the stronger the monsters get, but they’re living creatures too. There are exceptions… do you understand?”
“You mean it’s dangerous to assume that it’s safe just because we’re near the gate, right?”
“Exactly. Sometimes powerful monsters appear near the gate, and in such cases, sometimes we close the gate for safety.”
“Will you warn us?”
“It depends on the situation. Sometimes there won’t be time for that.”
In other words, be prepared to die if it comes to that. Kikori understood the unspoken message.
However, he also understood that there was no point in opposing it.
“I understand.”
“Good. Then, have a good adventure. We’re counting on you.”
After the guard said what seemed like a routine line, Kikori passed through the gate.
From here on out, it was a deadly place. He would either survive or die… That’s the kind of place it was.
