Chapter 141: Volume 4 Chapter 22: Poker

(Grace)

The weather today is very nice. Outside the carriage window, the afternoon sunlight streams in, creating a leisurely travel atmosphere.

"Hearts 2! Pull!" called Aure.

"Clubs, pull," replied Melon.

"...Straight flush, pull," I said, showing my cards - five, six, seven, eight, nine, all hearts.

Finally, the round ends with an eight of diamonds played.

"There must be something wrong! Damn it!" Aure gritted her teeth and pushed the copper coins used as chips in front of me.

"What a pity, Miss Grace. You have such good luck," Melon said, skillfully stacking the poker cards on the workbench, shuffling them as if putting on a performance.

With a rhythmic pattern, the poker cards were transformed into three neat piles, and the next round began.

Impressive... I also want to learn how to deal cards like that... but Melon won't teach me... fine, then I'll use magic to shuffle the cards.

"Take this! Seven of a kind!"

"Just so happens to be an eight of a kind, bigger than Miss Aure's."

"...Nine of a kind, pull."

"Why do I keep losing to you!"

"You have an unbelievable luck, Miss Grace."

"...Hmph." Of course, I won't mention that I used the [Eye of Ender] that are in [IRIS] hidden behind Aure and Melon to secretly see their cards and cheat.

In the end, Aure lost all her copper coins in ten rounds, and she had a reservation for massaging me tonight.

Now, she was sulking and playing the ukulele, creating a background music for me as I tidied up the poker cards.

The ukulele was a gift from Walson, and sometimes Aure would take it out to play... in the past, she only played it when she was in a bad mood, and the tunes were melancholic. Recently, it has become more cheerful.

...Nevertheless, the fact that "taking out the ukulele means not feeling well" hasn't changed, mostly after being teased by Walson.

"Damn it, next time the luck will be on my side!" Two loud strums that come from her ukulele expressed Aure's dissatisfaction.

This poker game that led to the current situation was a set of cards Walson gave us to pass the time the night before yesterday.

It all started when we were on the road, constantly doing calculations, sleeping, or chasing cars for exercise. At noon yesterday, Aure complained to Walson about how bored she was.

So, Walson made this card game for us to play. Surprisingly, it had some interesting strategic elements... maybe we could even sell it? Walson always came up with things others wouldn't think of.

Returning to the main topic, we continued our journey today.

It has been four days since we left Sadin Village. The scenery in front of us gradually changed from grasslands to mixed patches of sand, and the climate became drier.

I think we're not far from Duke Falmarno's Ridge. We might reach Vanos in a few more days.

Vanos, famous for its earth-built cities within Duke Falmarno's Ridge, is our next destination.

Walson said Vanos is the nearest city to the Palm Jungle, Melon's hometown.

And Palm Jungle is actually a temperate swamp forest.

That's why we need to go to Vanos first; swamps are not suitable for carriages, even if the said carriage is the [Dog House] Therefore, we have to enter Vanos and leave [Dog House] there before continuing on foot.

Melon's hometown, huh...

"Oh oh oh! It's a crested chicken!" Just as I was thinking that, Aure's voice brought me back.

She was pointing outside the window, where a flock of chickens had been startled and were flying all over the place as [Dog House] passed by, hidden in the tall grass.

"Walson! Let's add some extra ingredients for dinner!" Aure shouted.

"Sure... I want roasted ones," Walson also called out, and [Dog House] stopped with its swaying gait. Aure grabbed her longbow [Apollo], opened the door, and went out.

"Melon." Picking up [IRIS], I stopped Melon, who was about to get out to help.

"Melon, Do you have any idea what your hometown looks like?" I asked, voicing my previous thoughts.

"While there are a lot of caves and water, that's all I remember... if you really want to know, Master's secret base is more like a hometown," Melon replied.

"..." So, it's just like me.

"It has changed a lot too," Melon added.

This time when we returned to Sadin Village, many things remained the same, but many others had changed.

The people in the orphanage, some had grown up, some were no longer there. Like the old lady who used to punish Walson frequently, some others turned fifteen and left the orphanage.

No new children had come in these years, so the number of orphans decreased... there's no sense of disappointment in that; it's better to have fewer children who lost their parents.

"By the way, Miss Grace, do you ever think of searching for your biological parents?"

"I have no clues about their origin at all, so I don't really care..." I had thought about it before, but when I realized I had been abandoned by them, I didn't want to find them anymore.

"I see. It seems Master doesn't care much about this matter either," Melon nodded thoughtfully.

We got off [Dog House] and were about to move forward when a group of things fell right in front of my eyes, startling me.

...It was a headless crested chicken.

Aure in front of me quickly strung her bow and released an arrow with precise and concise movements, almost no time for aiming. However, all the arrows accurately pierced the heads of the crested chickens.

As no headless chickens could fly, the sniped monster began to fall like raindrops.

A little slower... and there wouldn't be any space left for me to join in.

Aure was naturally adept at long-range attacks, a natural born marksman. Hunting was her personal stage... I accidentally forgot about that.

"Miss Grace, let's join in too," Melon kicked her foot, and with a click sound, her equipment, [Band of the Bold], was ready.

"...Alright."...Let me think, which magic should I use?
