Chapter 9: Chapter 9: Old Madam Lu's Heart is Bleeding
Her own daughter had always been sensible at home, putting up with so much injustice. Yet now, although she was seriously injured, she still insisted on saying her injuries were not severe to ease their minds.
"Isn't she already in the hospital?" Old Madam Lu was originally upset that Lu Youxi's hospital fees were using up the family's money, affecting Lu Youbang's tuition fees.
She had just heard that Liu Yushu was planning to neglect her household duties to stay with Lu Youxi at the hospital, and she immediately felt as if Lu Youxi was a jinx to the family, someone who only knew how to hold them back without contributing anything positive.
At that moment, Old Madam Lu seemed to have entirely forgotten that if it weren't for Lu Youxi, Old Master Lu would have been the one lying in the hospital bed.
"There are doctors and nurses around, what could possibly happen to her! Besides, didn't she just injure one leg? The other leg seems quite active to me, it's not like she can't move!" Old Madam Lu curled her lip, "If she needs to get out of bed, she can hop on one leg!"
Liu Yushu felt this was unjust. How could Old Madam Lu say such things?
Lu Youxi held Liu Yushu's hand and said, "Mom, you go back. There's no need to stay here with me. I can manage on my own. If there's anything, I'll call the nurses for help. The chores at home are more important. And Dad has to attend to the fields in the afternoon, too."
Liu Yushu hesitated, but in the end, she couldn't resist Lu Youxi's persuasion and agreed to go home.
Before leaving, she also instructed Lu Youxue, "Pay attention to the time, don't be late for school in the afternoon."
Only then did Lu Youxi turn to Lu Zhenjia, and with a sigh of regret, said, "Second Uncle, now you'll have to ask Grandpa and Grandma for my cousin's tuition and living expenses."
Old Master Lu: "..."
Old Madam Lu: "..."
If you could hide the smile at the corner of your eye, you would appear more sincere.
Lu Zhenjia was well aware of Lu Zhenguo's financial situation; although Lu Youxi was annoying, she was speaking the truth.
Lu Zhenjia immediately turned his head to look at Lu Family's elders.
Old Madam Lu's heart ached, it felt as if it was bleeding, but she had no choice but to nod at Lu Zhenjia, "When we get home, I'll get the money for you with your father."
"Ai!" Lu Zhenjia joyfully responded, "When push comes to shove, it's still up to mom and dad."
Now that the money issue was resolved, Lu Zhenjia couldn't be bothered to stay and watch Lu Youxi,
Even if Lu Youxi died in a car accident, it would have nothing to do with him.
Ignoring that Lu Youxi was still lying on the hospital bed, Lu Zhenjia cheerfully said, "Mom, Dad, let's go home first."
Money was still the priority.
Just as everyone was about to leave, the village chief came back.
He had overheard quite a bit of what the Lu Family had said and felt some pity for Lu Youxi.
What kind of life did this girl lead at home!
He became even more convinced that Lu Youxi had not lied to him.
Upon seeing the village chief, Lu Zhenjia quickly ran back a few steps to the bedside and snatched the money that Lu Zhenguo had given Lu Youxi, which she had yet to put away.
Then he ran back to the village chief, with a fawning smile, handed over the envelope filled with money, "Village chief, the eldest girl said you fronted the money for her medical expenses, here's the money for you!"
The village chief glanced at Lu Youxi, nodded, and said, "Good."
And with that, he took the money.
Lu Zhenjia saw that Lu Youxi really hadn't lied.
Seeing the village chief take the money, everyone in the Lu Family breathed a sigh of relief.
Except for Lu Zhenguo and Liu Yushu, the others all felt it wasn't safe to leave the money with Lu Youxi.
"Then we'll head home," Lu Zhenjia continued with a fawning face, "There's so much work waiting in the fields."
The village chief knew no one would stay with Lu Youxi, but he still couldn't help but pretend to be surprised and asked, "Isn't anyone staying to keep Youxi company? She's hurt her leg and has trouble moving around. Going to the restroom and such may be difficult for her alone."
Liu Yushu wanted to say that she still wished to stay and take care of Lu Youxi, but Lu Youxi spoke first, "It's okay, I'll ask the nurses for help if I need anything."
"The eldest girl is capable and sensible; she doesn't want to interfere with the household chores." Ge Guifen's face was full of smiles, all insincere.
The village chief twisted his brow, seriously saying, "Zhenjia, I need to say this to you, Youxi's becoming a young lady now. It's one thing to call her 'eldest girl' at home, but it's not appropriate to call her that outside. Youxi has such a nice name. 'Eldest girl' sounds bad, and she could be laughed at."
Guifen brushed it off, superficially agreeing.
The Lu Family then left.
As they departed, only Lu Zhenguo and Liu Yushu gave Lu Youxi instructions filled with concern.
"Once I finish the morning's work, I'll come see you with your mom," Lu Zhenguo said.
Liu Yushu nodded in agreement.
Lu Youxi smiled as she bid them goodbye, while the village chief didn't leave and handed the money back to Lu Youxi, "Here, this is for you. I don't know where you get so much savvy from."
"But even though you've managed to get hold of the money and don't need to give it to Youbang, what are you going to do with it? How do you plan to pay back your parents?" the village chief asked again.
Holding an envelope filled with money, Lu Youxi grinned and said, "I'll keep it saved up here, for Youxue's future education. He may only be 12 now, but time flies by in the blink of an eye. I want Youxue to go to a university in the Imperial Capital in the future. It will cost quite a bit, so I need to start saving for him early on; I can't let Uncle take the money away time and again. What then for Youxue?"
"Sister, what about you?" Lu Youxue was anxious.
He had thought that Lu Youxi was keeping this money for her own university education.
"I have six more years before university, but you'll be starting this year." Lu Youxi had always done well academically, and Lu Youxue never doubted that she would pass the college entrance exams.
"Don't worry about me," Lu Youxi said with a warm smile, "I believe I can win a scholarship with my grades, and once I move to the city, I can earn my living expenses through part-time work while studying."
"I can do that too," Lu Youxue quickly added, "Sister, don't make things so hard on yourself."
"It's nothing," Lu Youxi dismissed, "Besides saving for your university, if possible, I want you to study in the city."
"Studying in the city is a different perspective; the schools teach more comprehensive content." In her past life, Lu Youxi had seen the splendor of all parts of the world, but the furthest Lu Youxue had ever been was only to the town.
Lu Youxi hoped not only for Lu Youxue to receive a better education but also for him to have a broader perspective.
The village chief, seeing that Lu Youxi was saving the money not for herself but for Lu Youxue, was surprised and secretly admired her selflessness, as she was so considerate of Lu Youxue.
It was clear that Lu Youxi was not stingy and unwilling to help the family. The fact that she refused to let the family give the money to Youbang, even joining forces with Youxue to deceive the family, showed that Youbang really had gone too far.
