The Adventurer Who Lacks Magic Power

Chapter 7 - Unable to return from the Viscount's residence.

Just as I was about to launch my Stone Lance, the boss raised its head and jumped, somersaulting in my direction.

I aimed my consecutive Stone Lances at the boss in mid-air, then continued pounding them as it fell irregularly to the ground.

I felt the impact, but I wasn’t sure if it was enough. I pressed my face against the cage, squinting, but I couldn’t see clearly.

I had fired 6 shots twice, so if it was still alive, it had only one round of counter-attacks left.

I moved the light closer to the boss, but the uncertain light and the numerous corpses made it hard to discern anything.

The knights, understanding my intention, raised the light and aimed it towards the fallen corpses.

“That’s probably the boss, the one that’s noticeably bigger. Well done, kid.”

The knights watched the direction of the fallen corpses in silence.

The slow moon began to rise, and everyone watched in silence as the moonlight crept along the ground and reached the corpses.

Suddenly, a chorus of wolf howls began, and one after another, the howls overlapped until dozens of them joined in a sudden, abrupt cacophony.

The presence of the wolves faded away.

“The pack is leaving… I think the boss is dead.”

A sigh escaped me. We survived.

Everyone stared at me in silence.

“Is it true? Are you sure?”

“Yes, the wolves’ presence has disappeared. Just in case, we should stay here until morning.”

Finally, as the moon reached its zenith, the welcome party from the town arrived. A carriage with an unmistakable air of nobility, followed by over twenty knights, and behind them, adventurers from the town on horseback.

When I broke the cage, everyone headed towards the welcoming carriage.

I stayed behind, waiting for the adventurers to arrive. Suddenly, the young lady called for me.

“Please come. We need to take care of the defeated Black Wolf.”

“It’s all yours. I’ll report it to the guild, so come with me.”

Orlan-san told me that, leaving me with no way to refuse.

“Kaito, get on the carriage. We have to meet my father and thank him.”

Ugh… It seemed like the worst possible outcome.

Ever since I was hit by the carriage’s wheel, my luck had been terrible. Damn that bastard for getting me involved with the guild guys!

I sat down with a potion-green face, surrounded by maids and the young lady. The carriage started moving.

“Kaito, where are your parents?”

“My father is around, but he’s a heavy drinker. I’ve been earning my own living for three years, and I haven’t been home since the Granting Ceremony. Please just leave him alone. It won’t lead to anything good.”

With a heavy heart, I boarded the carriage, which passed through the town’s gate, traversed the town, and entered the mansion of the Lord.

They parked the carriage right in front. Nervous, an old butler came out and respectfully opened the door. An old man, the image of a butler, bowed politely, welcoming the young lady.

Everyone followed the maid and me, entering the main hall.

“Who is this man, milady?”

“He’s Kaito, our savior. Without him, we would all be dead. Don’t treat him rudely.”

The maids and butlers, lining up, gave me unfriendly looks.

“Milady, we have to take care of the defeated Black Wolf. Should I inform the guild as well? Kaito, please come with me.”

Orlan-san said, leaving me with no escape.

“Kaito, get on the carriage. We must thank my father properly.”

Ugh… This seemed to be heading towards a disastrous outcome.

The carriage pulled away, and I couldn’t shake the feeling of impending doom.

The carriage stopped in front of the main entrance, and an old butler, probably a hundred years old, came out, respectfully opening the door. The lord and his daughter, the young lady, entered the main hall, accompanied by the maids and me.

The lord and the young lady took their seats, and I stood still, waiting for their instructions.

“Kneel! This is his Excellency Viscount Sharda Hamawaru and his daughter, Miss Fieen Hamawaru.”

I inwardly groaned. If I opposed, I’d lose my head. I hastily knelt.

I felt like I was going to prostrate myself without realizing it.

“Very well, it would be inappropriate to have the savior of my daughter kneeling. Kaito, please rise,” the Viscount said.

“I apologize, Your Excellency, for my lack of manners and ignorance,” I replied.

“Don’t worry about it. I am grateful that you saved my daughter and the knights.”

The Viscount bowed, an unusual gesture for a noble.

“It was a matter of circumstances that I helped. I also earned my keep by defeating a considerable number of Black Wolves. I don’t expect any gratitude.”

“No, it wouldn’t be fitting as a lord to just let you go like that. Once we’ve dealt with the fallen knights and carriage drivers, I’d like to express my gratitude properly. Is there anything specific you desire?”

This was my chance; I had to say something.

“In that case, there is one thing. During the Granting Ceremony, I was bestowed with earth magic and spatial teleportation magic. However, my mana capacity is only 40. I was instructed by the priest to present myself at your household’s servant entrance three months from today. If I prove useful at that time, the noble said he would employ me. I decline this offer, and that would be gratitude enough for me.”

“Hmm, so you’re doing that kind of thing?”

The old man’s face turned dark, and then he broke into a cold sweat, his complexion changing to a shade of blue.

“Summon Orlan,” he ordered a maid, and she hurried off to fetch Orlan-san.

Things seemed to be getting serious. I wondered when I could leave. My stomach growled loudly, disrupting the tense atmosphere.

The young lady was about to burst into laughter, but she managed to hold it in, though she was clearly struggling not to.

Orlan-san arrived just in time.

“I have something to ask Zamaya, so please wait in my office. I apologize for the inconvenience, Kaito-kun. Let’s have a meal.”

I was taken to the dining room, where breakfast was served. I was too nervous to eat comfortably, but I managed to eat my fill.

After finishing tea, I was told that they wanted to hear more about Zamaya. So, I was escorted to the Viscount’s office.

I wanted to go home, but it seemed impossible.

“Kaito-kun, the reward for the Black Wolf you defeated will be sent to the guild. Take your time here,” the Viscount said.

“Sigh…”

“Don’t make such a displeased face. We won’t force you to stay.”

As they were talking, another new character appeared.

He had the appearance of a noble, strikingly similar to the Viscount. There was no mistaking him for anyone other than his son.

I attempted to stand, but he gestured for me to sit.

“You’re Kaito, right? I went to the guild on my father’s behalf. Impressive job defeating 21 Black Wolves,” he said.

“Really? I didn’t think it was that many.”

“I heard from Orlan. One-shot kills, and you took down the pack leader with two consecutive shots. It was a wolf two sizes larger than the others, and you shot it four times through the body. Even the guild staff was amazed.”

“Isn’t this getting blown out of proportion? I have a bad feeling about this. Um…”

“My apologies. I am Hyalda Hamawaru, the legitimate son of Sharda Hamawaru. Nice to meet you.”

Even if you say “nice to meet you,” I don’t know what to do, I thought, but he smirked as if he had anticipated my reaction.

“We don’t need formalities with nobility,” the Viscount said directly. Although he said that, there would surely be annoying people around, people like Zamaya’s old man.

People who utilized others’ status to secure their own positions.
