chapter 5
He woke up as usual and got out of bed as usual.
Since he couldn’t afford a high-end magical device called a clock, he didn’t know the exact time, but he guessed it was around 5 in the morning.
Early hours for people to be active in Korea or this world.
After roughly tidying up the mess of her hair, I headed to the kitchen, trying to moisten my dry throat, and a savory aroma tickled my nose.
“Impressive.”
As I pushed the closed door and entered, a young girl with long silver hair that reached down to her waist was bustling around, flipping this way and that. She hadn’t noticed me yet.
“The water is right there.”
“…”
She didn’t respond, just ignored me.
With a small chuckle, I reached for the cup on the small table, and a cold sensation dominated my hand as the water flowed down my throat. As the water entered my throat, the organs that had been sleeping woke up one by one.
The girl with silver hair was washing the cup.
Approaching Amy, she cheekily snatched the cup from me.
“You’re in the way, big brother.”
“…”
How much of a bother could I really be… I thought, but I couldn’t ignore her words. When it came to this house, she was the one in charge, even though I used to be the one in charge when I was making money.
Once I no longer needed to make money through donations, she became the one who brought and prepared food, and thus, she became the one in charge.
After all, the one who provides the food is the master, right?

For a moment, I felt the chilly breeze of dawn.
“You’re in the way, big brother.”
With a warm voice that seemed sharp, the door opened. The young man, pushed out as if to be chased away, briefly stared at the closed door, then chuckled and walked over to the wall.
He took down the sword and shield hanging on the wall and began swinging the sword in the empty yard.
“Impressive.”
Olivia, a mother and the top donor of this shelter, had asked for the services of the guards of the shelter, and Kale was one of them. He admired the diligent training of Deam, who never missed a day, despite his age of fifteen, not too young and not too old. Despite his ambiguous age, Deam was mature and quite manly, so much so that the members of the guards who had come with Olivia were eyeing him as a potential future husband.
If there is a problem.
“It’s still sloppy.”
A complete lack of talent in swordsmanship.
No matter how much a novice practices every day for three years, they should grasp the basics to some extent.
But not for Diem.
If someone teaches him one thing, he forgets it the next day when he starts training alone in the morning, just like now.
Magic is no different.
One of his comrades tried to teach Diem magic, but he couldn’t control the mana.
A being with nothing to expect as a combat specialist.
However,
“That remarkable technique can’t be ignored.”
His talent in swordsmanship is terrible, but he possesses a unique, quick agility.
Moreover, when facing him with a sword, my grip loosens, and I unknowingly drop my sword.
The first training to join the Order of Knights.
Despite receiving training to never let go of the sword under any circumstances, it unravels when it comes to Diem.
A truly remarkable yet inept child.
Looking at him, I can’t help but feel pity and a smile forms on my face.
Kale briefly watched Diem, who tirelessly wielded his sword, before resuming his patrol of the sanctuary.

Olivia.
My hero mother donated to our sanctuary for two years.
At first, I was really worried.
Because it attracted the attention of famous figures in the world, not just ordinary people.
There are positive aspects to it, but there are also negative aspects to the attention of famous figures.
So, I trained to build the strength to protect myself, and, more importantly, to protect this sanctuary. However, I had no talent in swordsmanship.
Magic was even more out of reach.
So, I couldn’t achieve the goal of building strength.
What’s somewhat fortunate is that Legendary NPC Hero Mom treating the sanctuary like her own backyard didn’t cause any major accidents.
Yeah.
She felt relieved to have at least one worry less.
Just until this morning…
Olivia visited the relief center as usual.
Accompanied by numerous nobles, perhaps to offer their support or merely for show, Olivia made her way to the relief center.
The nobles forced smiles for ten minutes or an hour, then departed.
Olivia, staying till the end, shared dinner with the children.
“Then, I’ll come again tomorrow.”
As usual, she bid farewell, patting each child’s head.
“Shouldn’t you go to sleep?”
“Yes! Unnie! Let’s sleep together!”
“Waaah! I don’t want to part with my big sister!”
Today, seeing the assertive behavior of the children, Olivia’s usually composed demeanor weakened, giving a strained smile as she observed the knights who followed as her retinue.
The primary objective of these knights was to protect Olivia.
No matter how pitiable the children might seem, they couldn’t jeopardize the safety of their charge.
Though she attempted to push the children away with a cold expression…
“Perhaps just for a day… wouldn’t that be okay?”
Upon hearing the plea of their charge, she only let out a sigh.
“I will call for reinforcements.”
“Thank you.”
With a kind smile, Olivia nodded, and a knight bowed before leaving the relief center.
Presumably, they went to call for additional reinforcements as promised.
As an unexpected overnight guest, as I looked at Amy, she too sighed and went into the lodging.
Shortly after, Amy returned, now dressed in neat clothes.
“Rick? Delson? Is the time okay?”
Familiarly, she took the two children and went to the market.
Amy would manage the meal…
I headed indoors to arrange a suitable place for Olivia, who found herself surrounded by the children.
A soft bed and clean bedding.
Fresh water and untouched new candles that were lit this morning.
“There might not be snacks and drinks, but… this should suffice.”
For a moment, I had forgotten, but my original occupation was a manager.
Welcoming guests to the company was also my main duty.
When I was wearing a satisfied smile, thinking I was as prepared as I could be.
Crash!
A sound I seldom heard before.
Perhaps the inexperienced kids were trying to impress Olivia, fearing they hadn’t broken any glass? I stepped outside, casually thinking.
“Eek!”
“Waaaah!”
Kids screaming and crying as if overwhelmed by fear.
“Hey, it’s okay. It’s okay…”
Olivia soothing the crying children with a trembling voice.
“Darn it! Damn!”
Kale, surrounded by figures in black robes, moaning in pain.
It was clearly an unsettling scene.
When I hadn’t even grasped the situation due to the unexpected turn of events.
“Darn it! Watch out!”
At Kale’s shout, I recognized something flying towards me.
I raised my training shield, still holding it, with a thud! A resounding impact dominated my arm.
As I slowly lowered my trembling hand, a dagger stuck to the shield.
In that moment, I realized.
“Darn it! The worst-case scenario I anticipated has come true!”
The worst-case scenario I anticipated.
It was the attack on Olivia, the hero mother.
A hero is truly a revered and remarkable being from a human perspective.
Of course, not particularly revered by me, given that I lost my village and parents because of her?
In any case, from a human perspective, she was on humanity’s side.
On the contrary, from the Demon King’s perspective, she was the first target to eliminate.
But defeating a hero would waste so many resources?
So, why not kidnap the powerless hero mother and use her as leverage against the hero?
Even an ordinary company manager had such thoughts, so wouldn’t the Demon King, who was the Demon Lord, consider such an operation?
Ever since Olivia visited this shelter, the worries that she has always had finally became a reality.
And the timing is also bad, as if the demons have been waiting for it for a long time.
It may not be a slum, but it is still an outlying area of the kingdom.
It takes time for the soldiers to arrive.
One of the two knights of the Huyeong Order, who were responsible for Olivia’s protection, left to call for reinforcements.
On the other hand, there are five black-robed figures gathered to attack Olivia.
Since these figures are known to be quite kind, they might just kidnap Olivia and leave.
I have no confidence that their ominous swords, reflecting the sunset, will not cut my throat.
While thinking such thoughts, a man who had thrown a dagger approached me.
He was small in stature, not very big, but he held a wooden sword and a wooden shield, showing that he intended to subdue me first.
“Hey kid!!”
I’m thirty years old, and fifteen years old.
Olivia calls me “kid.”
This nickname from her felt really awkward, but it instantly sharpened my senses.
“I have no ill intentions towards you.”
A sword descending from above as if it intended to kill me in one blow.
If I were an ordinary child, I would have lost my life to this sword.
But for the past two years, I have been trained under the Huyeong Order.
Of course, I have hardly any talent, so I cannot overpower my opponent or anything like that.
But I can at least react to some extent!
Tilting the dagger held in my right hand, I blocked the sword descending towards my neck.
Thud!
The iron and wood made a dull sound when they collided.
Surprised by my quick response, the man’s eyes widened slightly.
“Hmm?!”
As the effect of [Close Mouth and Open All] suddenly opened his own fingers, his eyes widened as if his own sword, unable to conquer gravity, would fall.
Losing his weapon.
Being thrown off balance.
With the man’s head now vulnerable, I swung the shield forcefully towards it.
If it were an ordinary wooden shield, it would have just caused an impact and ended it, but now the shield had the sharp dagger thrown by this man stuck in it.
The direction may be regrettable, but the hilt of the dagger pierced deep into the man’s eyes.
“Argh!”
He cried out in pain, taking a step back, and I followed, pulling the dagger out.
Squelch!
“Gah…!”
I thrust it into his wide-open mouth as he screamed.
The sensation in my hand…
From my hand to my arm, shoulder, heart, and brain.
“So, this is what it feels like to kill a person…”
A nauseating sensation washed over my entire body, almost causing me to retch the snacks I had eaten earlier.
Taking a deep breath, I pulled the dagger from the man’s mouth, foamy blood oozing from his lips.
Splat! The hot liquid splashed across my face.
I wiped away the red fluid that covered my vision with my forearm and looked around, realizing that everyone’s gaze was fixed on me.
“Oh, my God?”
“What the hell…?”
The two women, who had thought I would collapse and fall, couldn’t believe that I had just killed the adult man.
“What’s wrong with that guy?”
“Damn it! They said there’s only one guard!”
“Sen is dead! Be careful!”
The attackers, who had regarded me as a vulnerable target who could be killed at any moment, now saw me as a threat.
In the spotlight of their collective gaze, I thought, “Oh, no… I’m really in trouble.”
I had to force myself to calm my stomach, which still felt like it was about to heave.
