Chapter 3: Chapter 3: Truth in the Shadows
Lin Yao stood frozen, her heartbeat racing as the scene before her blurred and the world around her began to distort. It felt as if time itself had paused. Instinctively, she reached out to steady herself against the wall, only to feel a powerful tremor ripple through it the moment her hand touched the surface.
Qin Yao stepped closer, his sharp gaze piercing into her, his presence commanding and intense. Lin Yao's chest tightened as she struggled to calm her frantic breathing.
"Can you feel it?" Qin Yao's deep voice carried an undeniable authority.
Lin Yao forced herself to focus, her voice trembling as she asked, "What's going on? Why is everything changing? What are you hiding?"
Qin Yao didn't answer immediately. His piercing eyes seemed to scrutinize her, weighing whether to reveal the truths he held.
"You've already sensed a part of it," he finally said, his tone steady but grave. "But what you know is only the tip of the iceberg. What lies ahead is a world you can't begin to imagine."
Lin Yao was stunned, her mind swirling with questions. She fought to suppress her rising panic, managing to ask, "What is this 'Source' you mentioned? And why am I connected to it?"
Qin Yao took a deep breath, his expression growing more serious. He slowly walked closer, stopping right in front of her, his tone firm: "The Source is the oldest power in existence. It holds the potential to alter everything—natural laws, human fate, and even reality itself. Nothing is beyond its reach."
Lin Yao struggled to grasp his words, but she could feel the weight behind them. Qin Yao's gaze held a depth that told her everything he was saying was real, and that her life would never be the same.
"Why me?" she murmured, her voice barely audible. "Why am I involved in this?"
Qin Yao looked directly into her eyes, his voice calm but laced with urgency: "Because the power within you has awakened. You've always thought of yourself as ordinary, living a mundane life, but your blood carries something extraordinary. You are part of the Source."
Lin Yao's mind went blank. She had always seen herself as unremarkable, despite occasional feelings of being different. Never had she suspected she might be tied to something so incomprehensible.
"You're saying… I'm not normal?" Her voice was filled with doubt and unease. "What am I supposed to do? How can I control this power?"
Qin Yao fell silent, as if debating how much more to say. When he finally spoke, his voice was steady and unyielding: "You don't have a choice. These powers have awakened, and they've already set your path. You're destined to be part of this chaos."
Lin Yao's eyes flickered with fear. "Chaos? Are you saying this city, or even the entire world, is no longer stable?"
Qin Yao nodded, his expression unflinching. "Yes, and it's all connected to the Source. Can't you feel it? It's subtly consuming everything, reshaping the laws of the world. And you—you are part of it."
Before Lin Yao could process his words, a sudden surge of energy pulsed through the air, thickening it to the point of suffocation. A wave of unease washed over her as the street behind her began to blur, and even the stars in the night sky seemed to dim.
Qin Yao's demeanor shifted, his voice cold and sharp: "They're here."
"Who?" Lin Yao asked, still trying to comprehend what was happening.
"The ones who hunt the Source," Qin Yao replied, his tone tense. "They'll stop at nothing to exploit its power for their own ends. And now, they've set their sights on you."
Lin Yao's heart skipped a beat, her chest tightening with dread. She glanced around, feeling an oppressive weight pressing down on her. "What should we do?"
Without hesitation, Qin Yao grabbed her hand and pulled her forward. "Come with me. Don't stop!"
She felt the warmth and strength of his grip as he led her through the dark streets. Despite the looming threat, his touch grounded her, giving her a fleeting sense of security amidst the chaos.
As they darted through the shadows, Lin Yao risked a glance over her shoulder. Emerging from the darkness were figures glowing faintly, their forms exuding an eerie and unnatural light, as if they belonged to a realm beyond comprehension.
"Don't look back," Qin Yao warned, his voice sharp but steady. "They're hunters of the Source, and their target is you."
Lin Yao's pulse quickened, her body trembling with fear as she followed Qin Yao's lead. She was beginning to understand: she wasn't just caught up in a conflict she didn't understand—she was at its center.
She tightened her grip on Qin Yao's hand, her mind racing. Her ordinary life had been torn apart, and the path ahead was shrouded in uncertainty. But one thing was clear: her fate was no longer her own.
