Chapter 10: A Night of Cold Silence
The silence that followed the argument was deafening. Lila lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, the memory of their heated exchange replaying in her mind. Guilt gnawed at her, but so did the fear that had fueled her outburst.
She tried to reach out to Ethan, to apologize for her outburst, to explain her fears. But his phone went straight to voicemail.
As the hours passed, Lila's appetite vanished. She lay in bed, her stomach churning with anxiety and regret. She knew she had gone too far, that her words had wounded Alexander deeply.
When Alexander finally emerged from his study, it was late in the evening. He looked tired and drawn, his eyes shadowed with exhaustion and pain. He tried to initiate conversation, but Lila remained silent, her gaze fixed on the ceiling.
He prepared a simple dinner, his movements stiff and mechanical. He set the table, his gaze lingering on the empty chair opposite him. Lila remained in bed, her silence a heavy weight in the room.
Finally, he came to the bedroom, his voice soft. "Lila, please. Come down and eat something. You haven't eaten all day."
Lila turned away, her voice muffled by the pillow. "I'm not hungry."
Alexander sighed, his voice laced with weariness. "Please, Lila. I'm sorry for what I said. I shouldn't have spoken to you that way."
Lila remained silent, her body rigid.
Alexander sat on the edge of the bed, his gaze fixed on her. "Lila, I love you. Please don't punish me like this."
Lila remained silent, her heart aching with regret. She knew she had hurt him, but she couldn't bring herself to forgive him, to forgive herself.
Alexander reached out, his hand gently touching her arm. Lila flinched, pulling away from his touch.
Alexander's hand fell back to his side. "Lila," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "Please."
He knelt beside the bed, his eyes pleading. "I'm begging you, Lila. Please don't do this."
Lila remained silent, her eyes filled with unshed tears. The sight of her husband kneeling before her, his pride swallowed by his love for her, broke her heart. But she couldn't bring herself to relent. The fear, the jealousy, the betrayal, all consumed her, leaving her cold and unresponsive.
As the night wore on, the silence in the room grew heavier, more suffocating. Alexander, defeated and heartbroken, finally retreated to the guest room, leaving Lila alone with her guilt and her growing sense of despair.
