A Love Across Time

Chapter 4: Chapter 4 : Where the Stars meet the Water

Sophia couldn't stop thinking about the cryptic note. Its simplicity masked a deeper meaning, and it tugged at her curiosity like a persistent thread waiting to unravel. She spent hours poring over the photographs from the rusted box. Most were too faded to make out clearly, but one image stood out—a young couple standing near a lake under a starry sky.

"Where the stars meet the water," she murmured, staring at the photograph. The connection was undeniable.

"Any breakthroughs?" Liam's voice startled her, and she looked up to see him standing in the doorway with a questioning expression.

Sophia gestured for him to join her. "Look at this. Do you recognize the location?"

Liam leaned over the table, studying the photograph. "That's Lake Hartwood. It's a few miles outside the city. The Harringtons owned property near there in the 1800s."

Excitement flickered in her chest. "Then that's where we need to go."

"Now?" Liam asked, arching a brow.

"Yes, now!" Sophia was already packing up her satchel. The urgency in her voice left no room for debate.

The drive to Lake Hartwood was quiet but charged with anticipation. The lake, nestled in a grove of ancient trees, shimmered under the late afternoon sun. It was serene and hauntingly beautiful, as if time had stopped here.

"This place feels... untouched," Sophia whispered, stepping out of the car.

Liam walked beside her, his gaze scanning the shoreline. "If Eleanor left anything here, it would have to be hidden."

They split up to search, combing through the area with meticulous care. Hours passed with little to show for their efforts. Frustration began to creep in when Sophia noticed something peculiar near the edge of the lake: a cluster of flat stones arranged in a deliberate pattern.

"Liam, over here!" she called out.

He jogged to her side, his breath visible in the crisp evening air. "What is it?"

She pointed at the stones. "These aren't random. Someone placed them like this."

Together, they began to lift the stones, revealing a hollow beneath. Inside was a small wooden chest, its surface worn smooth by time.

Sophia's hands trembled as she opened it. Inside was another stack of letters, but these were addressed to Eleanor from James.

"James responded to her," Sophia breathed, holding the letters with reverence. "But why were these hidden?"

Liam studied the chest thoughtfully. "Maybe they weren't meant to be found... until now."

The sky darkened as they returned to the manor with their discovery. The stars began to peek through the clouds, their reflections shimmering on the surface of the lake.
