Chapter 23: A Risky Defiance
Maria had never been one to back down when it came to protecting the people she loved, but this time she knew she was treading dangerous waters. Despite Vincent's repeated warnings, she couldn't bring herself to abandon her parents. Instead, she decided to take a risk: giving her parents her apartment address so they could visit her in secret.
Her apartment was modest but cozy, with a warm atmosphere that made her parents feel at home despite the tension lingering in the air. They visited her discreetly, arriving only after dark and leaving before dawn, but each visit filled Maria with a bittersweet mix of joy and dread.

Vincent's Discovery
Vincent, however, wasn't one to be outmaneuvered for long. His network of informants kept a close eye on Maria, and it didn't take him long to learn about the late-night visits to her apartment.
One evening, without warning, Vincent decided to confront Maria. He arrived at her apartment unannounced, his knock on the door sharp and commanding.
Maria froze when she heard it. Her parents, seated on the couch, exchanged worried glances.
"Who is it?" David asked.
Maria swallowed hard. "It's Vincent."
Sarah grabbed Maria's hand. "What do we do?"
Maria took a deep breath. "Stay here. I'll handle this."
She opened the door to find Vincent standing there, his expression a mix of anger and disappointment.
"You weren't home last night," he said, stepping inside without waiting for an invitation. His sharp eyes scanned the room, landing on her parents.
"So, these are the people you've been risking everything for," Vincent said, his tone dripping with disdain.

The Confrontation
Maria stood her ground, her arms crossed. "They're my parents, Vincent. I won't stop seeing them."
Vincent turned to Sarah and David, addressing them directly. "Do you have any idea what your daughter has gotten herself into? The danger she's put you in by involving you in her life?"
David, unshaken, met Vincent's gaze. "We're her parents. We have a right to be part of her life."
"And what about the consequences?" Vincent snapped. "Maria works in my world—a world you can't even begin to understand. Do you think the people I deal with will hesitate to use you to get to her?"
Sarah's face paled, and she reached for David's hand.
Maria stepped forward, her voice firm. "That's enough, Vincent. You don't get to scare my family into leaving."
Vincent turned to her, his voice low and menacing. "This isn't a game, Maria. You're putting their lives—and yours—in jeopardy. If you care about them, you'll send them away."

The Morning Decision
After Vincent left, the atmosphere in the apartment was heavy with unspoken fears. Maria couldn't sleep that night, her mind racing with Vincent's warnings.
The next morning, over breakfast, Sarah broke the silence.
"Maria," she began gently, "Vincent was right about one thing. This isn't safe—for any of us."
Maria looked up from her coffee, her eyes filled with worry. "Mom, I can't just send you away. You're my family."
David sighed, setting down his fork. "We understand that, Maria. But sometimes loving someone means doing what's best for them, even if it's hard."
Sarah nodded. "We've been talking, and we think it's best if we leave the city. Move somewhere safer—somewhere Vincent can't find us."
Maria's chest tightened. "You can't just leave. Where would you go?"
"We've been thinking about Texas," David said. "We have a cousin there. It's far enough from Vincent's reach, and it'll give us a chance to start fresh."

Maria's Inner Conflict
Maria felt torn between her desire to keep her parents close and the undeniable logic of their plan. She knew Vincent wouldn't stop until he felt he had complete control over her life, and her parents staying in Vancouver would only escalate the danger.
"But what about me?" Maria asked, her voice trembling. "I can't just pack up and leave."
David reached across the table, taking her hand in his. "You don't have to come with us, Maria. But promise us you'll think about your future. This life you're living—it's not who you are."
Sarah added, "You deserve better, Maria. We believe in you."
Maria nodded, tears welling in her eyes. "I'll think about it," she said softly.

A Plan for the Future
As the day went on, Maria helped her parents make plans for their move. They decided to leave quietly, without alerting anyone, including Vincent. It was a bittersweet goodbye, but Maria knew it was for the best.
That night, as she stood by the window watching the city lights, Maria made a silent promise to herself. She would find a way to break free from Vincent's grip and create a life she could be proud of—a life her parents would be proud of.
It wouldn't be easy, but for the first time in a long time, Maria felt a glimmer of hope.
