A Second Chance

Chapter 12: Ch. XII Nomad PT. 2

As I lock my eyes on what's creating the rumbling I see a bunch of rocks and sand being thrown up from the ground and it's getting close real fast. Zarek grabs me and Lyra throwing both of us on his shoulder and starts running, he's running much faster than a human. Guess that's a quality of a demon, he may be fast but not faster than the monster. We reach a large plateau and he puts us down then runs out into the plain with the monster heading towards him. Soon it jumps out of the ground to show it's body and attack Zarek, it's a Sandworm, huge, at least a mile long and 300 feet in radius. Impossible to dodge from its sheer size. Clearly Zarek knows this as he doesn't try to dodge and the Sandworm collapses over him swallowing him.

"Is he dead?" Lyra asks

"Hopefully not" I respond

I notice blood squirting out the top of the Sandworm and Zarek jumps out of the whole he made just before the Sandworm goes back under the ground. The rock and sand start shooting up again showing where the Sandworm is and it turns around to attack Zarek again this time Zarek runs and gets on top of the plateau me and Lyra are hiding behind and as the Sandworm jumps to attack him he jumps on top of it and clings to it by shoving his sword into the creatures eye and it squeels loud enough to break someone's eardrums. The Sandworm goes back underground but with Zarek still on him, soon after the Sandworm jumps back out trying to get Zarek off. Just then Zarek pulls out the sandworm's eye and the worm hits the ground on its way down but doesn't go under. Zarek then runs over to us

"It's dead",

"Are those hard to kill usually" I ask.

"Not really anyone Sword Warriors or higher could do it and some Sword Knights.",

"Sword warrior?! What rank are you?!", I ask.

"I'm a sword warrior", Zarek replies.

"I'm barely intermediate!" I say.

"Intermediate is good for your age, I've been studying for fifty years" Zarek says

"How old are you?" Lyra asks.

"I'm 67, we mature at 40 instead of 20 like humans, so 34 if I were a human" he answers "We should probably keep moving get some water and we'll be off"

Lyra and I head back over to the spring and drink some water directly and then take some in a pouch Zarek gave us. Once we finish getting water we start walking again we notice a group of soldiers that are heading towards us at first Zarek gets ready to fight but then he calms down. Apparently it's soldiers of a nearby city we're gonna stop by, once they reach us they ask us.

"Have you three seen a Sandworm nearby? We heard a roar from one from this area" One of the soldiers asks.

"Actually y-" I say but then Zarek interrupts me.

"No sir but we heard the same roar, never saw it though."

The soldier looks at Me and Lyra then looks back at Zarek "Alright you three have a good day then." He then rides off again towards where the Sandworm is.

"Why'd you lie?" I ask

"They didn't need to know I killed it"

"But why not?" Lyra chimes in "it's cool I'd brag"

"You'll learn someday" Zarek says patting Lyra's head

Eventually we make it to the city, it's a medium sized city with similar architecture to Arabian architecture from earth. The main street is pretty lively, whilst the smaller roads and alleyways are very dead. As we walk through the main street multiple people come up to us advertising what they're selling but we ignore them as nothing is useful to us at the moment. Except for a bird person of sorts asks if we would like some Mahi Mahi meat which we do buy since it's super rare here and it's being sold for insanely cheap, alongside Zarek really wanting some. After about 30 minutes we find a decent yet cheap inn and we walk in buying a double bed room.

Once we walk in Lyra immediately jumps onto one of the beds "ahhhh, finally a comfortable place to sleep"

"Enjoy it while it lasts we're leaving here within the week" Zarek says.

"There's only 2 beds?" I ask

"Yes I'll sleep on the floor" Zarek says

"Oh okay."

"Get some sleep" Zarek tells us

I put my stuff down and lay on the other bed "You're right Lyra this is nice no more hard rock. At least for the moment..."

We talk for a bit and eventually go to bed once the sun goes down.

I wake up in the middle of the night to the sound of Zarek leaving the room, I wonder where he is running off to but ignore it assuming he'll be back by morning.
