A Sunless Dream | Shadow Slave Fic

Chapter 68: God On Earth (5)

The walls of Mordret's castle were licked with flames, marking the harrowing onslaught that had been dished out by the dream spawn. Although the four opponents before him were truly harrowing foes, in the face of an entity who could control the very fabric of the world. Such matters were trivial.

Their strategy was simple, rush in one after another, covering the gaps that the former left and try to discover a weakness in the harrowing battle art that Mordret had made his own. The monumental power he wielded made it easy to forget that he too was a blade forged for battle, no less than even Morgan of Valor.

Mordret took a step forward, his left hand buried casually inside his pocket, his right arm being the only deadly weapon at his disposal. The four warriors stared at the man before them, in so little blows he had managed to dish out monumental amounts of damage onto them.

It wasn't merely physical force, every hit he landed changed an unknown, unseen fact about them that none could put their finger on. Every attack he dodged extracted faint amounts of resolve that they all knew would pile up eventually.

The four warriors although battered were far from broken, they struggled to their feet as Nephis eyes blazed with resolve making it clear she was going to be the one to begin the engagement. Revel stayed behind begrudgingly, every fight she watched Mordret have would only make it easier to make him suffer was the rationale that emanated through her mind.

Nephis grunted in pain as her flames reignited, the heat searing the air around her. Her sword blazed white-hot once more, and she surged forward with renewed fury. Swinging her sword downwards, her flames carved through the air with deadly intent.

None of that was enough to make Mordret's heart sing. The roars of an unholy titan reverberated through his mind as he supressed it with monumental amounts of unseen effort, his will determined not to be crushed here.

He had his mind split up on too many things, controlling the ever-dwindling amount of Saints against the twin shadows as well as keeping the Night clan transformed to do battle against Nightengale and Morgan.

He wouldn't allow Morgan to die easily.

Despite the mental anguish he was going through, he lifted his arm and caught the blade barehanded. The flames hissed and roared, emanating with Nephis harrowing will as they all failed to burn Mordret's skill. Nephis eyes widened as Mordret's grip tightened, his fingers denting the metal as though it were clay.

With a grunt, he ripped the weapon from her hands, preparing to snap it however Nephis reacted faster, dismissing the blade before summoning another. It was a good thing she came prepared.

Extending an arm, one of the swords she had stolen from Anvil's armoury upon his death made its way into her palm. Noticing Mordret's eye twitch, Nephis smirked slightly as she closed the distance between the two.

Mordret was faster though, in a moment, he was in front of her. Punching her in the stomach, he knocked the wind out of her before grabbing her by the hair and throwing her into the air, only to spin Nephis jaw with a right hook.

Barrelling into the wall, Nephis body was caught by Cassie. Revel paid Nephis injured form no mind as she darted in with murderous intent. Her dagger soared through the air as it drew closer to Mordret's throat. True darkness around her blade writhed like snakes, obscuring her movements.

She was fast, almost impossibly so, her strikes precise and unrelenting. One combo flowed smoothly into the next with almost seamless accuracy as Mordret was forced to duck under the blow. Bending her hand mid swing, she brought her dagger wielding arm downwards as it encroached on Mordret's head.

The dagger quickly grew closer to his skull as Revel muttered "I learnt that from Orion." Mordret's head snapped upwards, he slammed his open palm into her arm causing her to let go of her blade, before slamming his palm into her chest sending her gliding backwards.

"Then you should have brought him instead." He replied mockingly, he sidestepped a follow up thrust, his right hand snapping up to catch her wrist mid swing however snakes conjured by true darkness soared through the air, intent on cutting his throat.

Mordret pulled his wrist backwards, swaying his hand through the air as he cut the throats of the snakes before him in one fluid motion. Twisting his attention downward, he moved his arm down to block a kick from Revel as he grinned at her maliciously.

Fighting was slowly becoming easier, the more Sunny and Orion killed, the less he had to divide his attention. He could feel the final step towards completion, he had to kill the unholy god once more in a mental battle.

His hand shot out, grabbing Revel by the throat and lifting her off the floor. Her legs kicked as darkness flared around her wildly however Mordret's grip did not yield. Through no choice of his own space around him bent allowing even the lightest of movements to possess unyielding force.

Throwing her into the air, he extended an open palm before clenching it into a fist and thrusting it forward. A simple one-inch punch sent Revel barrelling into Jet with blinding speeds, Jet caught the woman, who had blood spewing from her chest wildly as drops of blood poured from her mouth.

'If I hadn't blocked that with darkness at the last moment, he might have run his hand through my chest' Revel thought to herself, sharp pains emanating through her body as she tensed her muscles to forcibly stem the bleeding. Jet's cold blue eyes shot in Cassie's direction; an unseen question being passed between the two.

[Two minutes, we need to endure for just two minutes.]

Jet materialised behind Mordret, resolve flowing through her veins instead of blood as her scythe slashed through the air with lethal intent. Her misty form shifted unpredictably, and the only thing that could be sensed through the blinding mist was a scythe, which encroached on his neck to deliver a killing blow.

Mordret ducked at the last second, his reflexes impossibly sharp. The scythe passed harmlessly over his head and before she could pull back, he spun on his heel, space giving way allowing him ease of access as he appeared face to face with Jet.

"Nice eyes, if you stop here, I won't kill you" Mordret offered with a grin, Jet's response was to jump backwards preparing herself for another onslaught. In a single motion, Mordret caught her scythe before the swing could begin. He yanked it from her grip before twirling the weapon in his hand, inspecting it with mild interest.

Moving to snap it over his knee, Jet dismissed the weapon as Mordret cocked his head to the side. "I've got to stop trying to snap your weapons, you'll keep dismissing them before I do. If I ask nicely, will you stop?" His tone dripped with faux innocence as Mordret's fist slammed into her midsection before she could react.

Jet slammed into the dirt several feet away, her body limp. With another flick of his wrist, the castle around them reformed. He wasn't merely manipulating matter, but rather creating it from nothing as he reshaped the castle back into it's original form. Nodding proudly, Mordret stood silently, awaiting the next attack that came.

Time was running low; it was almost time for Sunny and Orion to arrive. And in that brief moment before their arrival, they were determined to let it all loose on the battlefield. Nephis stared at Orion, gritting her teeth slightly before detonating her titan core.

The force of the explosion threatened to expand outwards however Nephis channelled it into her sword with her supreme will alone as a beam of light shot forward towards Mordret. It was a replica of what Orion had once done, and she was hoping it landed.

Instead of dodging, Mordret raised an arm to attempt to deflect the blow. The force of impact proved surprising as he found himself being moved backwards, intent on proving victorious in the clash of might, Mordret dug his feet into the ground and pushed forward, enduring until the last of Nephis essence was burnt.

As the light faded, Nephis charged in head-on. Her sword blazing with flames so intense they turned the air into ash, Revel flanked Mordret, her darkness serving as a perfect contrast to the light that Nephis was emanating.

Nephis came in with a sweeping slash of her sword. Mordret parried it with a flick of his hand flames sputtered upon impact. He twisted her wrist and prepared to drive a finger into her gut however his attack was stopped by Revel. Manipulating tendrils of darkness, she grabbed onto his fist and extended spikes outwards to gore him.

Mordret jumped backwards and aimed his focus at Cassie, who was the nearest combatant at the time. Cassie met him with equal vigour as she lunged towards him, her rapier darting for his throat. Mordret sidestepped, grabbing the blade mid thrust.

The metal bent under his grasp as he snapped the weapon in half. Slamming an elbow into Cassie's chest, he then proceeded to slam his fist into the centre of her face once more. Instead of a solid blow, Cassie rolled with the punch allowing herself to be hit to land an attack of her own.

Although it was several orders of magnitude weaker, Cassie had managed to land a blow. A punch to her liver sent electricity pulsating throughout her body as she was blown onto the other side of the room. Jet's scythe came for him from the side, but Mordret caught the blade between two fingers.

He twisted it out of her hands, twirled it like a toy before quickly snapping it before Jet could dismiss the weapon. As Jet returned to her solid form for a fraction of a second, Mordret slammed his fist into her jaw, sending her sprawling to the ground.

Despite their injuries, the four women rose again. Moving as a unit. Nephis flames combined with Revel's darkness. Forming a vortex of two forces that attempted to drown and destroy one another as they pulsated and undulated towards Mordret's form at blinding speed.

Cassie darted behind the beam; her movements precise as Jet circled above preparing to strike Mordret down. The attack came together perfectly, their combined abilities creating a deadly coordinated assault.

Mordret's smirk faded slightly as he raised his right hand, bracing himself as the wave of flame and darkness collided with his form. The force of the blow shook his entire body as he was forced to shift and send the beam soaring upwards.

"This is how Sunny defeated you last time, Changing Star." Mordret mocked. In a moment, Mordret's arm was coiled around Nephis face as he slammed her head into the concrete with immense force. Spinning around, he caught Revel on the jaw, spinning her brain around in her skull as her knees betrayed her.

Moving to Cassie, he nearly ripped a hole through her body with the force of the blow that tore through his midsection as he sent her barrelling in a bloody heap towards the rest of the fallen warriors. Jet was quickly dealt with as well, two punches to the liver enough to rip her resolve from her very soul.

Standing above them, Mordret contemplated his next actions as a gigantic great sword protruded from his midsection. Turning around, an onyx saint was present within his shadow. Eyes glowing read with blazing fury.

Before he could turn around, the ceiling imploded as two darkened figures shot through the ceiling. Bloodlust permeated through the room as Mordret stared at the two figures with a slight bead of sweat falling from his face. What he saw was not something that could be categorised by mere ranks and classes.

What he saw....was death.
