Absolute instinct

Chapter 21: Into the Unknown

Darian returned to the camp with a grim expression, the massive footprint still vivid in his mind. The implications gnawed at him. As the tension in the air thickened, he wasted no time in summoning the key leaders of the camp.

"Everyone, gather up now," Darian commanded, his voice sharp and unyielding.

Within minutes, the leaders assembled—Marcus, Mara, Bheem Jog, Jack, Rathar, and Senna. Their faces bore a shared sense of foreboding as they stood before Darian, awaiting his words.

"We've found something," Darian began, his voice measured yet charged with intensity. "A predator unlike anything we've faced before. Massive, intelligent, and possibly the reason for the unnatural quiet in this region."

A wave of murmurs spread through the group. Bheem Jog adjusted his glasses, his analytical mind already racing for solutions. Mara narrowed her eyes, her combat instincts on high alert.

Marcus stepped forward, crossing his arms. "Are we sure it's just one? Could there be more of these things out there?"

Darian met his gaze. "We don't know yet. But judging from the footprint and the silence around the area, this creature is either eliminating competition or commanding it. Either way, it's dangerous."

Jack spoke up hesitantly. "Some of the scouts reported strange sounds—a low, guttural growl that made even the monsters scatter. It's... not like anything we've encountered before."

The room grew still, the weight of Jack's words sinking in.

Darian broke the silence, his tone resolute. "We're not staying here long enough to find out its next move. But we need to understand it. If this creature poses a threat down the line, we can't afford to be caught off guard."

Mara leaned forward, her voice laced with concern. "You're proposing we track it? That's a massive risk, Darian. What if it targets us instead?"

Darian's gaze hardened. "We won't engage it. This is reconnaissance only. I'll lead a small team to observe and assess its behavior. The rest of you will prepare the camp for departure. No delays."

The group exchanged uneasy glances. Marcus broke the silence. "I don't like it, but you're right. We can't ignore this."

Darian nodded. "Marcus, you'll oversee the camp while I'm gone. Bheem Jog, you'll handle any technical preparations—set up contingency traps or distractions in case the creature gets too close. Rathar, you'll take charge of organizing the defenses. Make sure everyone is prepared to move at a moment's notice."

He then turned to Senna, whose sharp mind had proven invaluable. "Senna, you're coming with me. Your expertise might help us understand this thing better."

Senna nodded, her expression calm but focused.

"Jack," Darian continued, "I'll need your knowledge of the terrain. You're coming too. Mara, you're with us. The rest of you, maintain order and stay vigilant. We leave at dawn. Prepare yourselves."

Dawn

The morning air was thick with tension as Darian, Mara, Jack, and Senna stood at the jungle's edge. The remaining members of the camp—Marcus, Bheem Jog, and Rathar—watched them leave, their expressions a mixture of determination and concern.

Darian turned back to the camp. "Keep the camp secure. No unnecessary risks. If anything happens, you know what to do."

Marcus gave a curt nod. "We'll hold things down here. Stay sharp out there."

Bheem Jog adjusted the straps on his toolkit. "I'll make sure the camp's defenses are in place. You've got this, Darian."

Rathar, ever stoic, simply nodded, his hand resting on the hilt of his blade.

"Good," Darian said. He turned to his team. "Let's move."

Deep in the Jungle

Hours passed as they moved deeper into the wilderness. The forest was unnaturally quiet, the usual cacophony of wildlife replaced by an eerie stillness. It felt as if the jungle itself was holding its breath.

Jack led the way, his movements deliberate and cautious. Occasionally, he glanced back at Darian, who followed silently, his sharp eyes scanning every shadow. Mara brought up the rear, her every movement calculated, while Senna walked with a calm demeanor, her sharp mind analyzing every detail.

"This area used to be crawling with monsters," Jack whispered, his voice barely audible. "Now it's just... empty."

Darian didn't respond, his focus razor-sharp. Every fiber of his being was attuned to the unnatural atmosphere.

Then, they heard it—a low, resonant growl that seemed to vibrate through the ground. The group froze, their breaths caught in their throats.

Jack's face went pale. "That's it," he whispered. "That's the sound."

The growl came again, closer this time. The ground beneath their feet trembled slightly, as if the earth itself was reacting to the creature's presence.

Darian motioned for the group to move forward, each step careful and soundless.

When they reached a small clearing, they saw it. The creature loomed in the distance, its massive form partially obscured by the dense foliage. Its sheer size was staggering, its presence almost overwhelming.

Darian's heart pounded, but his mind remained calm. He studied the creature's movements—the way it carried itself, the deliberate precision of its steps. This was no mindless beast.

The creature stopped suddenly, its massive head turning as if sensing their presence. The group froze, barely daring to breathe.

After what felt like an eternity, the creature let out a low rumble and moved on, disappearing into the jungle's depths.

Darian exhaled slowly, his mind racing.

"We're leaving," he said quietly. "Now."

As they retreated, the oppressive silence returned, broken only by their careful footsteps.

One thought burned in Darian's mind: They were no longer at the top of the food chain.
