Aegis The Unbreakable

Chapter 2: Chapter 1: The First

The dawn broke over Lumina City, casting long shadows over the urban landscape. Ethan Kael's world was already far from ordinary, but the events of the past week had shattered any illusion of normalcy. He sat at the edge of his small apartment's roof, staring at the bustling streets below. His mind churned with questions, each more daunting than the last. What was the shard that had given him this power? Why him? And most troubling of all, what would he do with this responsibility?

He had spent the week testing his abilities in secret, lifting cars with ease, leaping from rooftop to rooftop, and enduring unimaginable impacts that would have killed any normal person. Every challenge made him stronger, but the surge of power also frightened him. It was like a fire he couldn't extinguish, a force that demanded to be used.

His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of sirens in the distance. Instinctively, Ethan's head snapped toward the noise. A plume of black smoke rose from a nearby district. Something was wrong. Without hesitation, he leapt from the rooftop, landing gracefully in the alley below. The time for questions could wait. Right now, someone needed help.

The source of the chaos was an armored car robbery in progress. A group of masked men armed with assault rifles had blocked off a busy intersection. Civilians screamed and scrambled for cover as the robbers fired warning shots into the air. Ethan observed the scene from the shadows, his heart pounding. He was no soldier, no hero—just a man trying to understand his place in the world. But as one of the robbers dragged a terrified child out of a car to use as a human shield, Ethan knew he couldn't stand by.

He stepped into the street, his voice cutting through the cacophony of panic. "Let the kid go."

The robbers turned, momentarily stunned by his audacity. The leader, a burly man with a scar running down his cheek, barked a laugh. "And who the hell are you supposed to be?"

"Someone who's giving you one chance to walk away," Ethan replied, his tone steady despite the adrenaline surging through him.

The leader sneered and raised his rifle. "Wrong answer."

The first shot rang out, but the bullet never reached its target. It flattened against an invisible barrier mere inches from Ethan's chest. The robbers froze, their confidence faltering. Ethan took a step forward, his voice low and commanding. "Last warning. Let the kid go."

The leader growled in frustration and gestured to his men. "Take him down!"

They opened fire, the air filling with the deafening roar of gunfire. Ethan stood his ground, feeling the impacts dissipate harmlessly against his shield. With each bullet absorbed, his strength grew, the energy surging through him like a tidal wave. When the gunfire ceased, the robbers stared in disbelief, their weapons useless against this unyielding force.

Ethan moved like lightning. In a blur of motion, he disarmed the nearest thug, tossing the rifle aside as though it weighed nothing. The second man swung a crowbar at him, only to watch it shatter upon contact. One by one, the robbers fell, incapacitated but alive. Ethan's movements were precise, controlled—a stark contrast to the chaos around him.

The leader was the last to stand. He grabbed the child, pressing a knife to their neck. "Stay back, or the kid gets it!" he snarled.

Ethan's eyes narrowed, his voice cold. "You've already lost. Let them go, and I won't hurt you."

The leader hesitated, his confidence wavering. Before he could react, Ethan surged forward, faster than the eye could follow. He wrenched the knife from the man's hand and pushed him back, shielding the child with his own body. The leader stumbled, his footing lost, and collapsed to the ground, defeated.

Police sirens grew louder, signaling the arrival of law enforcement. Ethan turned to the child, kneeling to meet their tearful gaze. "You're safe now. Go to your mom."

The child nodded, running into the arms of a relieved woman nearby. Ethan stood, glancing at the approaching police cars. He knew he couldn't stay; questions would be asked, and he wasn't ready to reveal himself to the world just yet. With a final glance at the scene, he disappeared into the alleyways, his mind racing.

That night, Ethan returned to his rooftop, the city's lights stretching endlessly before him. He couldn't ignore the weight of what he had done. For the first time, he had stepped into the role of a protector, using his power to shield the innocent. But it was only the beginning. The robbers had been small-time criminals, and he knew far greater threats loomed on the horizon.

As the wind brushed against his face, Ethan clenched his fists. He hadn't chosen this path, but it was his now.
