American Tax Officer

Chapter 224: The High Position Offered by the CIA_2

"I know Deputy Director Donald," said David, "but I think what our IRS wants is precisely this effect. We can take this opportunity to showcase our authority before the entire globe on the Oscar platform. Isn't this also a great opportunity for publicity?"

Donald pondered for a moment, then asked, "So, according to you, since you dare to make a move during the ceremony, you must have gathered evidence of someone's tax evasion, right?"

"Of course, otherwise how could I dare to make such a suggestion."

In fact, David had no evidence at that moment; he wasn't even clear which movie stars were suspected of tax evasion.

But that didn't matter, he had a trump card. Just by showing up at the venue tomorrow, he would naturally get everything straightened out!

"Are you sure you really have confidence in this? If it's screwed up, our IRS is going to face big trouble!"

Arresting someone at such a major event like the Oscars—if it turned out to be a success, that was one thing, but if it went wrong, wouldn't global public opinion instantly turn against the IRS, considering those celebrities' massive fan bases?

"I'm certain, Deputy Director Donald. I would stake my life on it!"

Donald fell silent once more, this time for a full two minutes, before finally speaking with determination, "In that case, I believe in you. You go ahead and do it, and leave the rest to me!"

"Understood, Deputy Director Donald!"

"..."

After ending the call, David was just about to review which big names would be attending tomorrow when the landline phone rang. He had no choice but to answer it, "What is it?"

"Director, CIA Director Elvis is here to see you. Do you have time to meet with him now?"

David looked puzzled upon hearing this, but he responded, "Alright, bring him over."

A few minutes later, there was a knock on the door, and then Elvis walked in with a smile, saying, "Director David, congratulations on your outstanding achievements this evaluation period."

"Thank you, but Director Elvis, you came all the way here just to congratulate me? There must be something else, right?"

"Yes, there is."

Elvis sat down, looked directly at David, and asked, "Director David, would you be interested in transferring to our CIA?"

Recently, David had caught the four spies assigned to him, and after interrogation, they had achieved significant results, exciting many high-level members at the CIA.

When the CIA's senior leadership found out that it was David who had caught these spies, they began to consider recruiting him, and that was why Elvis came today, hoping to persuade him.

David was taken aback. He wondered why Elvis had come to see him; it turned out the taste of success from those spies was too tempting.

But on the other hand, he was doing quite well in the IRS system with a promising future, so why move to the CIA?

To help with poverty?

Such a foolish thing was not something he would do!

With that thought, he replied, "No, catching spies is just a side job for me. My expertise is in taxation, so I appreciate your director's offer, but no thank you."

Elvis was not surprised by the response and calmly said, "Whether it's catching spies or taxing, they're quite similar at the core. Well, let's not talk about that. Actually, I'm here on behalf of our director. His offer is that, if you're willing to come, you would be appointed directly as the Assistant Director, in charge of the Intelligence Division."

At these words, David's pupils contracted sharply.

The CIA is primarily divided into four departments: Operations, Intelligence, Science and Technology, and Administration.

Among them, the Intelligence Division is the most important since the CIA was founded on intelligence work.

And the so-called Assistant Director position is one of the highest, ranking fifth in the entire CIA system, just below the Director, the Deputy Directors, and the Executive Associate Director. It's a position at the core of CIA's top echelon.

To invite him to join the CIA, the CIA Director was offering such a significant position?

This indeed came as a surprise to David.

Even Elvis himself had been taken aback when he first heard the director's decision, but he later understood the reasoning.

Firstly, the IRS wields much greater power than the CIA.

And now that David had been promoted to the promising position of Director of the Western Suburb Branch, it was virtually a foregone conclusion that he would move up to the Washington D.C. Headquarters.

The CIA could only offer a high-ranking position to possibly sway David.

Otherwise, why would he be willing to take a job at the CIA if it was a lateral move or a slight promotion?

"Our CIA has offered the utmost sincerity. What do you think, Director David?"

"Please tell your director thanks for his generous offer. I currently have no plans to leave the IRS."

David thought about it and ultimately declined.

He was now the Director of the Western Suburbs Branch. Joining the CIA as an Assistant Director would certainly be a promotion.

But firstly, when comparing the two departments, the CIA definitely does not offer as much potential for the future as the IRS.

Secondly, as the CIA Assistant Director, he would no longer enjoy the same level of public attention that he did at the IRS.

The style of the CIA is to remain understated, much like a leopard prowling in the night.

Even if he were to make great achievements, they would likely only circulate internally—outsiders wouldn't know what he had done.

That was not what he wanted or aspired to at the moment.

Elvis was taken aback. He hadn't expected David to so casually decline a position that numerous people in America would covet.
