Chapter 15: The Quest for toast -Part 2

Okay, so I was feeling pretty good about my toast mission. I walked back to Elder Hurky's quarters with the toast in hand like I was carrying a golden treasure. I mean, sure, I almost got zapped by that magic lizard and almost crashed into a few stands, but who cares about those details, right? I was a hero in the making.

When I finally knocked on Elder Hurky's door, I didn't even wait for him to invite me in. I was already feeling like I had this in the bag.

"Elder Hurky!" I said as I strutted in. "Mission complete. I got the toast."

Elder Hurky didn't look up from his tea. Instead, he took a slow sip, as if waiting for me to mess up somehow. His silence was honestly a bit unnerving. I stood there awkwardly for a moment before placing the toast on the table in front of him.

"There you go," I said proudly, crossing my arms.

Elder Hurky finally glanced down at the toast and then back up at me, his face completely unchanged. "This is... not toast."

I stared at him for a second. "What?"

He pointed at the piece of bread. "This is just a regular slice of bread. It looks nothing like toast."

I blinked. "Wait, are you serious? But the guy at the market"

"You were tricked by a merchant, Rank F," Elder Hurky said, not even looking disappointed, just bored. "You'll need to go back and get the real thing."

I stood there, completely stunned. "Wait, you're telling me... I went to the market, argued with an old man, almost got zapped by a lizard, and now... this is all for nothing?"

Elder Hurky sighed. "Yes. Get it right this time. I'm not going to tell you again."

I could feel my face turning bright red. "But... but I tried! It's not my fault the merchant tricked me!"

He looked at me with the most deadpan expression. "It's your fault for being an idiot."

I slumped my shoulders. "Fine. I'll go back. Again. For the real toast."

As I turned to leave, I could hear Elder Hurky muttering to himself. "One day, you'll get it. Maybe."

I grumbled under my breath as I made my way back to the market. Next time, I'm not going to fall for the old man's tricks. Yeah. That's right. Next time.
