Chapter 7: Chapter 7: Gaileo vs. Jack
Jack drew his pistols and showered me with rapid shots, every one of them was perfectly aimed at my vitals. I wrapped Zabimaru around myself to block the bullets then took another swing at him but he dodged it. He then
The fight then turned into a repetitive match of me taking swings with Zabimaru while he dodged and got distance so he could take shots which I would block.
"Tch! I know if I could land one good hit the fight would be over, but I can't get close. He's perfectly gauged Zabimaru's maximum range, and he's staying outside and making me chase him."
This was the first fight I had in this world that I didn't win in one hit. It reminded me that the stronger guy didn't always win in One Piece fights. This guy was pretty skilled, and he was clearly way more experienced with tough fights than I was.
"Hehe, you're not bad where did you learn to fight?" I asked while swinging wildly with Zabimaru.
"Well I don't talk about it much but I used to be in the Navy. I even made it to the rank of Rear Admiral." He replied.
"That's impressive. What made you give that up?" I said still swinging Zabimaru.
"Ha! How about this? If you beat me I'll tell you."
"Deal! And if I win you'll have to join my crew."
"That's pretty demanding. What do I get if I win?"
"Now who's being demanding? You're already going to get my bounty of 20 million if you beat me and now you want more? Fine, I'll give you my ship if you win. So what do you say?"
"Heh, deal." He said with a smile.
Though I made that bet things weren't going my way. He had Zabimaru's range of motion completely figured out. There was no way I could hit him with Zabimaru. Not in its current form anyway.
"Bankai! Hihio Zabimaru!!!!"
Zabimaru transformed into its giant snake form and shit through the smoke. He clearly wasn't expecting Zabimaru to be able to extend further than it had been. Zabimaru's jaws closed around him, trapping him in the grip of its teeth and slamming him into the wall behind him. As he was stuck Jack tried to fire his pistol at me but I tightened Zabimaru's bite causing him to loose the grip on his guns.
"Look's like I win. Welcome to the crew!" I said with a grin.
Jack continued to struggle to break free despite his perilous situation and said, "I hate to go back on my word, but there's no way I could ever join a pirate crew. I'd rather you just kill me."
"Oh I see, well I guess I could do that. Although, before I do you at least owe me the story of why you quit the Navy."
"Fine." He said as I released him from Zabimaru's grip. "It all started when I was a boy…"
"Aw jeez, you're starting all the way back when you were a kid? I'm curious about your past, but I'm not interested if it's too long of a story."
"Hey screw you! You're the one who ask me to talk about it, and it's not that long if a story I'm just providing important context!"
"Alright go ahead."
"Anyway when I was a kid my village was wiped out by pirates. So I joined the Navy. Not for revenge or anything, I just wanted to enforce justice and protect people from having the same thing happen to them. I served in the Navy for many years, but eventually I saw the corruption of my superior officers. I became convinced that I'd never be able to pursue true justice while in the Navy. That's why I became a bounty hunter, so I'd be free to enact my own form of justice. That's why I'll never join a pirate crew, I could never go against my code of justice."
"Oh is that it? That's not a problem at all." I said dismissively.
"Huh? What are you talking about? Pirates are in direct opposition of justice. You pillage and kill and destroy. How could you expect me to be willing to join a group like that."
"Well for one thing, we're not a crew that does that kind of stuff. We're just some guys who are pirates for fun. And if you really want to be free to execute justice your own way then joining us would be your best bet."
"How so?" Jack asked visibly confused.
"Think about it. As a bounty hunter, you still can't fight the marines even though some of them deserve to get taken down. But if you were a pirate you'd be free to take out evil no matter whether they're a pirate or marine. As your captain I'd never restraint your pursuit of justice."
"Hmm, I guess you have a point. I'm still a bit tentative about joining a pirate crew though. I'll take your word that you're not bad guys, but if I ever see you straying from my path of justice…" Jack then drew his pistol and pointed it at my head. "… then I'll take you out myself."
"Fair enough. Works for me." I said as I extended my hand to Jack and we shook hands. "Welcome to the crew!"
Around this time, Yuma had come stumbling over to us. He has covered in bruises and clearly out of breath. He had won his fight against "The Hangman" but it had been a back and forth brawl. He was a bit apprehensive about adding one of the bounty hunters to our crew, but considering our situation we had to take who we could get.
As we made our way back to the ship, Jack asked me, " So where is the rest of the crew?"
"This is all we got." I told him.
"Huh? You're traveling the Grand Line with just two guys? That's insane!"
"Welcome to the crew, that's just the way our captain is." Yuma said. "Listen Gai, I get that this guy is strong and he will definitely make a good addition to the crew. But we're still missing our most vital needs. We need a navigator and a chef. Ouch! And a doctor would be good too." Yuma said as he winced at the bruises he received from his fight.
"I don't know about a navigator or a doctor, but I do know a really great restaurant at the next island that trains chefs. We should be able to get someone from there to join us."
"Look at that! You're already pulling your weight around here. Alright let's set sail right away!"
