Chapter 104: Chapter 104: Su Wu's Expanding Territory
Chen Yue's health issues were, at their core, a result of the poor living conditions in the underground residential zone. Now that she was in Su Wu's shelter, with its state-of-the-art air purification systems and climate-controlled environment, she would recover even without intervention.
Still, Su Wu followed the medical instructions from the AI's database and administered targeted medication to help Chen Yue wake up sooner.
With that taken care of, Su Wu motioned for Chen Xin to follow him to the control center.
"From now on, your main responsibilities will include overseeing material trade with other shelters and managing affairs related to the subsidiary Qingning Shelter. Additionally, you'll need to gather useful intelligence from the internet and compile it for me," Su Wu explained.
He paused briefly, then added, "On top of that, you and your sister will handle daily maintenance tasks here in the shelter, fulfilling maid duties as needed."
As he spoke, Su Wu unlocked a secure safe beside the control console and retrieved a biological chip.
"Also, take this."
Chen Xin listened attentively, showing no sign of resistance. She only hesitated slightly when Su Wu handed her the crystalline chip. Nevertheless, she followed his instructions, placing it gently against her forehead.
A slight prickling sensation ensued, and in a moment, the chip seemed to dissolve into her skin. Almost immediately, Chen Xin noticed her thoughts becoming sharper and more organized.
"What… is this?" she finally asked, curiosity overcoming her hesitation.
"A biological computer chip. You can take some time to familiarize yourself with how it works," Su Wu replied casually, gesturing for her to return to the living quarters and tend to her sister.
For now, there were no urgent trade matters to handle, given the post-earthquake chaos. It was an opportunity for Chen Xin to adapt to her new environment.
Bringing these sisters into the shelter was a life-changing event for them, a decision that could reshape their futures. To Su Wu, however, it was merely a way to complete a daily task while gaining an extra pair of hands to delegate mundane responsibilities.
With the task completed, Su Wu turned his focus back to the shelter's development.
Seated at the main console, he glanced at the system panel. The mission to recruit a new member was marked as complete. He claimed the 5 survival points reward, bringing his total to 27. The daily task panel was now empty, with no new missions appearing.
"These survival points saved me during the crisis," Su Wu mused.
The quick restoration of the shelter during and after the earthquake owed less to the construction robots and more to the survival points that enabled swift repairs. Without them, restoring the shelter to its current state would have taken at least a full day—a delay that could have proven fatal in the event of another disaster.
Recognizing their value, Su Wu resolved to always keep a reserve of survival points on hand—five or six should suffice.
Shifting his attention to the control console's screen, Su Wu reviewed the shelter's current status and upcoming tasks.
Following the earthquake and subsequent rescue efforts, Su Wu's sphere of influence had expanded to include the Qingning Shelter, 7.5 kilometers away, and the watchtower base, 13 kilometers distant.
This territorial expansion offered significant advantages, particularly in terms of space. Su Wu no longer had to meticulously plan how to fit more supplies and equipment into the limited confines of his primary shelter. Instead, he could implement parts of his broader development plans across these auxiliary sites, accelerating overall progress.
"The main base at the farmstead is stable. The hydroponic farm on the first underground level and the livestock area on the third level are back in operation. The fifth level, aside from the storage areas, sustained minimal damage and just needs some wall repairs and cosmetic fixes for the greenery."
He frowned as he considered the industrial recycling center and chemical laboratory on the fourth underground level.
"That area will take longer to restore."
The fourth level was the last priority for repairs unless there was an immediate radiation breach or other critical issue. However, its low priority did not mean the damage was minor.
After thorough inspections by the construction robots, Su Wu discovered that many machines in the industrial recycling center and some precision instruments in the chemical lab were beyond repair. They would need to be entirely rebuilt using the CNC machine and 3D printer, making this the most resource-intensive area to restore.
Given the extent of the damage, the remaining construction robots could do little to help. Professional engineering robots were required, and with one currently deployed in urban rescue operations, progress on the fourth level had come to a halt.
Su Wu glanced at the surface.
Above ground, the extreme drilling machine had been fully repaired by the engineering robot and was operating smoothly, with two construction robots assisting. It was on track to complete the geothermal generator's underground pipeline in about 17 hours.
"I can reassign the surface engineering robot to the fourth level," Su Wu thought.
With only two engineering robots at his disposal—one in the city and one on the surface—his options were limited. Even with the reassignment, fully restoring the fourth level would take over ten hours.
"Perhaps it's time to invest in a third engineering robot," Su Wu considered.
Engineering robots were expensive, but the need for their specialized capabilities was becoming increasingly apparent.
