Chapter 88: Chapter 88: Pig and Cattle Farms
Over the next few days, despite the worsening surface conditions due to the radiation storm, life within Su Wu's shelter remained calm and steady.
The sale of radiation detectors concluded on the second day of the storm, as most shelters had already secured their equipment. By the time the last detector was handed over to a buyer, Su Wu had accumulated around three million contribution points and nearly 47 million points' worth of other resources.
These materials were predominantly scrap metals and finished steel, with smaller quantities of common and precious metals, discarded circuit boards, and chemical raw materials.
This abundance of resources provided a solid foundation for Su Wu. With these materials, he could easily produce a wide range of basic industrial products or outdated technological models.
It also allowed him to experiment freely, turning his imaginative ideas into tangible mechanical enhancements for the shelter. While some ideas might seem crude or laughable now, they could lead to groundbreaking results with the support of abundant resources and AI refinement.
On the third day of the radiation storm, freed from the need to produce detectors, the CNC machine and 3D printer completed the current phase of upgrades for the engineering team. This brought their efficiency to 15 times its previous level.
Meanwhile, word spread across shelters that surface radiation levels fluctuated randomly over time. This unpredictability increased fear among surface workers, prompting many to quit.
Those who remained were coerced by shelter administrators but demanded higher wages, better protective gear, and temporary accommodations—requests that strained resource-poor shelters. Consequently, many small- and medium-sized shelters reduced external trade, moving toward self-imposed isolation.
On the fourth day, at 9:22 a.m., a miner-type transport vehicle delivered the lambs to a newly built pen on the fifth underground level.
Outside the pen, several construction robots planted grass transferred from the third-level planting zone onto a pre-laid soil bed.
Within half an hour, a lush, 100-square-meter grass field appeared in front of the pen, creating a tranquil scene.
The sheep pen, along with its attached grass field, occupied approximately 100 square meters of the fifth level—a level recently expanded by the engineering team to over 1,000 square meters.
In addition to the pen, Su Wu had constructed a 500-square-meter storage facility and a 100-square-meter purification room on the level.
From a farming perspective, the sheep pen was an extravagant use of space. A vast 1,200 cubic meters of underground space housed only a small patch of grass and a handful of lambs, which together barely occupied a single cubic meter.
However, Su Wu now had the resources to indulge in such luxuries.
He even planned to expand the area around the pen to include a garden, a fountain, and a small forest.
Although surface vegetation had been nearly wiped out, acquiring tree seeds or saplings was relatively easy.
The official contribution point warehouse in Jianghe City offered dozens of tree species, and purchasing a small quantity was affordable.
"If I'm buying seeds, I might as well get a bit of everything," Su Wu mused.
"Ginkgo trees, osmanthus, peach trees, and other ornamental varieties should be purchased as larger saplings. Trees take years to grow, and seeing them flourish into a dense forest will take even longer. Starting earlier means enjoying them sooner."
This was a forward-thinking plan. If the opportunity existed, Su Wu didn't want forests to be mere images in videos.
"Also, it's time to purchase some piglets and calves."
With the shelter's expanded space, there was now room to support larger animals. These steps would meet future needs and prevent the difficulties of acquiring such livestock later when resources would be scarcer.
Pigs and cows, being highly sought after, were the first choices. The current period was likely the last chance to buy them at a reasonable price.
However, unlike the lambs, which were treated with special care, the pigs and cows wouldn't receive the same luxury.
Su Wu planned to dedicate half of the fifth level to a livable, natural garden. Unsuitable elements, such as pigs and cows, would be relocated elsewhere.
For now, they could be temporarily housed on the fifth level. Once the sixth level was constructed, the livestock would be moved there and raised industrially, following the third level's farming model.
Acting on his thoughts immediately, Su Wu opened the official warehouse inventory.
Using his remaining tens of thousands of contribution points, he bought various tree and flower seeds, including species unavailable in his shelter.
He also purchased a dozen piglets and calves, selecting a mix of meat cows and dairy cows.
With proper care, this initial stock would be enough to establish a sizable pig and cattle farm in the future.
