Chapter 99: Chapter 99: Succession of Leadership
With unexpected gains, Su Wu's motivation to continue the rescue surged.
He directed the engineering robot to activate one of the thermal power generators, restoring central air conditioning and the ventilation system. The remaining nine generators were inspected and prepared for future use.
After completing the rescue, Su Wu planned to establish a medium-sized high-temperature furnace at the Green Lemon Shelter for processing scrap metal. With the shelter's abundant coal reserves, it was a waste not to utilize them.
Although this felt like an advance on future resources, idle reserves are of no use if they aren't converted into tangible strength. Unused resources could easily be lost in another disaster.
Su Wu was determined to invest in expanding his mining and resource-gathering teams, accelerating his growth exponentially.
Two hours later, the Green Lemon Shelter's rescue operation was nearly complete.
The living areas where survivors had gathered now had restored power, cooling, ventilation, and lighting. The damaged outer walls had been reinforced with debris and soil. While the shelter appeared battered and broken from the outside, it now provided a solid framework for the survivors to rebuild their lives gradually.
One survivor, peeking out cautiously, asked, "Are they gone?"
Seeing the last armed robot disappear into the dark hallway, he couldn't help but speculate.
"Gone? No way," sneered Chen Yan, one of the temporary spokespersons Su Wu had appointed. "From now on, they're our new bosses. Step out of line, and you might find yourself getting shot."
"Stop scaring people," another survivor muttered, retreating sheepishly.
"Enough bickering," another spokesperson intervened, pointing to the earpiece they were wearing. "Don't forget the surveillance and sensors we just installed, and the trackers on your phones and wristbands. The boss is always watching. He hasn't gone anywhere."
Resigned to their reality, the survivors accepted their new ruler. At least this ruler didn't need a management team, was fair, and treated everyone equally.
With the Green Lemon Shelter stabilized, Su Wu's convoy headed toward the two remaining shelters in dire straits.
The first was another mid-sized shelter, while the other was a small one with around 600 residents.
The mid-sized shelter was in far worse shape than the Green Lemon Shelter.
A massive fissure had torn the shelter in half, with one section swallowed by the earth and the other thrown onto the surface, now a pile of rubble.
Given such devastation, Su Wu had little hope of finding many survivors.
After a brief search, he found only 200–300 people alive.
There was a silver lining: amidst the wreckage, Su Wu found two relatively intact modified trucks. After some emergency repairs by the engineering robot, they were roadworthy again.
Using these trucks alongside his own transport vehicles, Su Wu decided to relocate these survivors to the Green Lemon Shelter for centralized management.
The small shelter, despite its intact structure, had suffered a catastrophic fire in its fuel storage during the earthquake. The blaze had gutted much of the shelter, leaving it barely functional.
Food supplies, essential equipment, and basic amenities were nearly nonexistent. Without outside help, survival was unlikely.
Faced with the hopeful gazes of the survivors, Su Wu made the only feasible decision—he relocated them to the Green Lemon Shelter as well.
With the new additions, the Green Lemon Shelter's population rose to around 2,500. The increased population meant greater survival pressure, but Su Wu had provided the means for self-sufficiency.
After relocating the survivors, Su Wu turned his attention to the two abandoned shelters.
The wrecked mid-sized shelter was like a ruined treasure trove in Su Wu's eyes. With the Green Lemon Shelter's abundant resources fresh in his memory, he hoped to find similar gains here.
Sadly, the results were underwhelming.
Aside from the two modified trucks, the mid-sized shelter's ruins yielded little of value. Most of what remained were damaged household appliances, hardly worth the effort to salvage.
"So much for high expectations," Su Wu grumbled.
He suspected the shelter's most valuable assets—its generators, central air systems, and fuel reserves—had sunk into the abyss with the other half of the shelter.
Disappointed, Su Wu redirected his efforts to the small shelter.
Despite the fire damage, the shelter's sturdy construction left its core structure relatively intact.
Su Wu decided to repurpose it into an unmanned outpost for resource storage and hazardous material containment.
The small shelter's location, over 10 kilometers from Su Wu's base, made it an ideal site for future geothermal power generation. Su Wu planned to drill and install two new geothermal power generators.
Once operational, the outpost would serve as a remote facility, securing Su Wu's hold over a larger territory and bolstering his growing network of resources and infrastructure.
