Ascension of the Ocean’s Goddess

Chapter 11: Chapter 10: Descent into Darkness

The sanctum's stillness hung heavy after Merilla's trial. While Renar prepared to face the Abyssal Mirror, Merilla sat quietly, the Codex resting on her lap. Its light pulsed softly, a steady rhythm resonating with her heartbeat.

Though her body ached and exhaustion tugged at her, her mind churned. The shadow she had faced wasn't just a manifestation of her fears—it reflected how much further she still had to go. She had won the battle, but the war against the deep ones loomed more prominent than ever.

Kaelina approached her, carrying an air of quiet authority. "You did well, Merilla."

"Did I?" Merilla asked, her voice tinged with doubt. "It didn't feel like a victory. It felt… incomplete."

Kaelina sat beside her, the weight of her spear resting against the cavern wall. "Because it is. The Abyssal Mirror is not the end of your journey. It's the beginning. The shadow you faced today will return stronger and more cunning. The deeper you delve into the Codex's power, the more it will test you."

Merilla tightened her grip on the glowing artifact. "I'm ready for it."

Kaelina gave her a knowing look. "We'll see."

Renar's trial was as loud and chaotic as Merilla had expected.

While she had fought with focus and precision, Renar faced his shadow self with brute force and unrelenting determination. The echoes of clashing weapons and Renar's shouts reverberated through the sanctum, starkly contrasting the eerie silence of Merilla's battle.

When he finally emerged, battered but triumphant, he grinned at Merilla despite the exhaustion etched into his face.

"Piece of cake," he said, though his labored breathing betrayed the truth.

Merilla smirked. "You're lucky your shadow didn't get tired of you talking and leave."

Kaelina interrupted their banter, her tone sharp. "Both of you have passed the trials, but your training isn't over. The Abyssal Mirror was a taste of what lies ahead. The true challenge will be facing the deep ones themselves."

Renar straightened, his usual bravado replaced by a rare moment of seriousness. "When do we start?"

Kaelina's expression darkened. "Sooner than I'd like."

Two days later, the whispers returned.

Merilla woke abruptly, the haunting voices echoing in her mind. They were clearer this time, no longer a distant murmur but a distinct call.

Come to us, choose one. The abyss awaits.

The Codex reacted immediately, its glow intensifying as though sensing the source of the voices.

Merilla sat up, her heart pounding. She glanced at Renar, who was still asleep, and then at Kaelina, who sat on watch near the cavern's entrance.

Taking a deep breath, she swam over to Kaelina.

"They're calling me again," Merilla said quietly.

Kaelina's gaze sharpened. "The deep ones?"

Merilla nodded. "It's different this time. Stronger. More… deliberate."

Kaelina was silent for a moment, her expression unreadable. Then she stood her spear in hand. "Wake Renar. It's time."

The trio descended into the trench, the weight of the ocean pressing down on them as the light from the sanctum faded behind them.

Kaelina led the way, her spear held at the ready. Renar followed close behind, his trident glowing faintly in the darkness. Merilla brought up the rear, the Codex clutched tightly in her hands. Its light was their only guide, casting eerie shadows on the rocky walls.

The whispers grew louder the deeper they went, a dissonant chorus that seemed to come from all directions.

"Anyone else getting chills?" Renar muttered, his voice breaking the oppressive silence.

Merilla didn't answer. Her focus was on the currents around them, which grew colder and more turbulent with every stroke of her tail.

Kaelina stopped suddenly, raising a hand. "We're close."

Ahead of them, the trench opened into a vast chasm. The water here was unnaturally dark, a swirling vortex of shadow and energy that seemed to pulse in time with the whispers.

At the center of the chasm stood a massive structure—an ancient, coral-encrusted temple that seemed to grow out of the seabed itself. Its jagged spires and twisted architecture exuded a malevolent presence as though the temple were alive.

"The Abyssal Temple," Kaelina said, her voice grim. "This is where the deep ones are strongest."

Renar whistled softly. "Looks cozy."

Merilla ignored him, her gaze fixed on the temple. The Codex's pull was stronger than ever, its light brightening as though drawn to the structure.

"They're in there," she said.

Kaelina nodded. "Stay close. And stay alert."

The interior of the temple was even more foreboding than the exterior.

The walls were lined with glowing runes, similar to those in the sanctum but corrupted, their light flickering and distorted. The water here felt heavier and oppressive, as though the temple was trying to crush them.

Merilla felt the Codex pulse in her hands, its warmth comforting to the cold surrounding them.

"They're watching us," Kaelina said, her voice low.

Merilla glanced around, her grip tightening on her staff. She could feel the sensation of unseen eyes following their every move.

They swam more profoundly into the temple, the whispers growing louder with each passing moment. The corridors twisted and turned, leading them in a labyrinthine path designed to confuse and disorient.

Finally, they emerged into a massive chamber. At its center stood an altar surrounded by a circle of glowing runes. The water here was thick with shadowy tendrils that writhed and twisted like living things.

On the altar lay a fragment of coral, its surface dark and pulsating with malevolent energy.

"The Heart of the Abyss," Kaelina said, her voice filled with awe and dread.

Merilla felt the Codex react instantly, its light intensifying as it resonated with the fragment.

"What is it?" Renar asked, his voice hushed.

"It's a piece of their power," Kaelina replied. "A fragment of the deep ones' essence. Destroying it would weaken them—but it won't be easy."

Before Merilla could respond, the shadows in the chamber shifted.

Figures emerged from the darkness, their forms twisted and grotesque. They were deep, larger, and more menacing than the illusions Merilla had faced in training. Their glowing eyes burned with malice, and their movements were unnervingly fluid.

"Get ready," Kaelina said, raising her spear.

The battle was chaos.

The deep ones attacked with relentless ferocity, their strikes swift and precise. Merilla and Renar fought side by side, their weapons cutting through the water in a synchronized dance.

Merilla focused on controlling the currents, using the techniques she had learned to redirect the deep ones' movements and create openings for Renar to strike. The Codex pulsed in her hands, and her energy flowed as she fought.

Kaelina was a whirlwind of motion, her spear striking with deadly accuracy. She moved with a grace that spoke of years of experience, her attacks devastating the deep ones that dared to come near her.

But for every enemy they defeated, more seemed to emerge from the shadows.

"We can't keep this up forever!" Renar shouted, his trident spinning as he blocked another attack.

Merilla's gaze shifted to the altar. The Heart of the Abyss was the source of their power—if they could destroy it, they might have a chance.

"Kaelina!" she called. "The altar!"

Kaelina nodded, her movements shifting as she began carving a path toward the center of the chamber.

Merilla and Renar followed, their attacks focused on clearing the way.

The deep ones redoubled their efforts as they reached the altar, their attacks becoming even more frenzied.

Kaelina raised her spear, its tip glowing with energy as she prepared to strike the Heart of the Abyss.

But a massive figure emerged from the shadows before she could land the blow.

It was a deep one unlike any they had seen, its form towering and wreathed in dark energy. Its glowing eyes burned with a malevolence that sent a chill through Merilla's veins.

The creature roared, reverberating through the chamber as it lunged toward them.

Kaelina barely managed to block its attack, and the force of the impact sent her tumbling backward.

Merilla and Renar stepped forward, their weapons at the ready.

"Looks like we've got a big one," Renar said, his tone grim.

Merilla tightened her grip on the Codex, its light flaring as she prepared to fight.

The battle was far from over.
