Chapter 2: Aspect Masters
Leon sat beneath the sprawling branches of a centuries-old tree, the sun shining brightly through the leaves, casting dappled shadows on the ground. He gazed out at the bustling village below. Leon had just turned fourteen yesterday, and tomorrow he would take part in the Aspect Awakening Ceremony.
Since coming to this world, he had learned many things. Chief among them was the harsh reality that this land was far from peaceful. Beneath the surface of everyday life lay a simmering tension—one tied directly to the power of "Aspects."
Aspects were manifestations of an individual's essence, and everyone was born with one. They could take countless forms, revealed during the Awakening Ceremony held when a child turned fourteen. It was said to be a deeply personal and often emotional event, one that defined a person's future in this world.
An Aspect could be almost anything. Some prestigious families even had ancestors so strong that some descendants were able to inherit their Aspects, a phenomenon that often cemented their power and influence across generations.
For some, it manifested as tools: humble items like gardening hoes, fishing rods, or blacksmith's hammers. These individuals often found their calling in professions where their Aspects complemented their craft. For others, Aspects took the form of weapons—axes, swords, bows, or spears—signaling a life of combat or protection. And then there were those whose Aspects were beasts, ranging from common animals like boars and hawks to mythical creatures such as dragons and phoenixes. These were the rarest and often the most revered, for they carried a sense of majesty and raw power.
In this land, those who cultivated themselves alongside their Aspects were known as Aspect Masters. They were the pinnacle of strength and influence, ruling cities, leading armies, and shaping the future of the world.
Aspect Masters followed many paths, but the three most common were the Battle Path, the Research Path, and the Artisan Path.
The Battle Path was the most celebrated and the most obvious. Those who followed it honed their Aspects for combat, training their bodies and minds to become peerless warriors. Battle Path Masters were the ones called upon in times of war, their presence often turning the tide of entire conflicts. Their cultivation focused on physical strength, agility, and the ability to harness their Aspect's offensive capabilities. A swordsman's Aspect might allow their blade to cut through steel, while a beast Aspect like a bear could grant immense strength and resilience. These individuals were the protectors and conquerors of the land, feared and revered in equal measure.
The Research Path, on the other hand, was for the scholars and thinkers. These Aspect Masters delved into the mysteries of Aspects themselves, seeking to understand their connection to humanity and the world. They studied how Aspects formed, how they could be enhanced, and how they influenced the people who wielded them. Research Path Masters were often seen as the backbone of innovation, responsible for breakthroughs that advanced cultivation techniques, improved the quality of life, and deepened humanity's understanding of their own potential. A Research Master's Aspect might be a quill that recorded knowledge perfectly or a lens that revealed the unseen.
The Artisan Path was less well-known but no less vital. Artisans were creators who used their Aspects to craft items of extraordinary power and beauty. Their Aspects often manifested as tools of their trade: a blacksmith's forge, a weaver's loom, or even a painter's brush. These Masters dedicated their lives to crafting weapons, armor, and artifacts imbued with the essence of their Aspects. Their work was sought after by Battle Path Masters and kings alike, for the creations of an Artisan Master could turn the tide of history.
Leon's mind often wandered to thoughts of his own Awakening Ceremony, now just a year away. He wondered what form his Aspect would take. Would it be something simple, like a tool or a weapon? Or would he inherit the Aspect of his family?
Leon was fortunate enough to be born into the Tharvyn family, a lineage that, although not considered a top powerhouse, was an uprising force in the realm.
Generations ago, a Tharvyn ancestor had risen from obscurity, bringing with them an Aspect that began as a small white serpent. Through relentless cultivation and countless trials, that serpent evolved into a majestic white dragon. This remarkable feat of evolution solidified the Tharvyn name and left an indelible mark on history.
This legacy had planted the seeds of ambition within the family, earning them growing respect and influence. Although rare, such evolutions were not unheard of; Aspects, under certain conditions, could mutate or evolve into stronger versions of themselves. These transformations were often seen as a testament to the strength and potential of the wielder, further elevating their status.
Leon often found himself wondering if he would carry forward that legacy or forge a new path entirely.
The red crystal tied to his soul gave him no answers, only a faint warmth that pulsed when he concentrated on it. Leon had discovered when he was younger that the red crystal seemed harmless. In fact, it brought benefits. In fact, it brought benefits. While it didn't enhance his physical strength or grant him any obvious powers, it allowed him to comprehend things at an astonishing rate.
His mind processed information faster than the average person, making learning and problem-solving feel almost effortless. He had tried experimenting with it further, but so far, nothing else had happened.
'This world,' he thought, 'is built on the strength of Aspects. Without one, you're nothing. But with the right one, you can become everything.'
He looked into the distance, his eyes tracing the vast fields and the bustling village beyond. Far away, he could see farmers working their fields, soldiers patrolling the roads, and merchants haggling over wares. Each of them carried an Aspect, seen or unseen, shaping their lives and their destinies.
The thought was both thrilling and terrifying. Soon, he would join their ranks and begin his own journey as an Aspect Master.
But what that journey would look like, only time would tell.
