Chapter 37: Savage
"Come, Eren! Let's end this once and for all!" Reiner's voice echoed through the desolate battlefield, his words laced with exhaustion.
Eren closed his eyes for a fleeting moment, centering himself. His heartbeat thundered in his chest, the rhythm syncing with his instincts. With a single leap, he launched himself forward, his body moving like a force of nature.
Reiner charged, each step leaving deep imprints in the shattered concrete beneath him. As he closed the distance, he threw a massive punch, his armored fist hurtling toward Eren.
Eren reacted in an instant, grappling onto a nearby crumbling house and swinging out of harm's way. Reiner, sensing an opening, shifted his balance and kicked out, his leg slicing through the air. But Eren ducked just in time, his body skimming the ground as his boots scraped against the rubble-strewn road.
"Tch…" Reiner growled, eyes fixed at Eren who took long heavy breaths standing in front. "You've gotten stronger Eren." Reiner whispered eyes never leaving Eren's. Without hesitation Reiner sprinted towards Eren swinging his fist again, brutally shattering the street underneath.
"Hange, now!" Eren bellowed.
From the shadows, Hange emerged, her figure silhouetted against the chaos. Her eyes glinted with determination, blood streaking down her face. She unleashed her own thunder spears, the explosive impact tearing through Reiner's eyes.
Eren took a long deliberate sigh, emerging from the swirling haze of debris, maneuvering through Reiner's legs.
In a wink Eren hurled all four thunder spears in rapid succession. They found their mark, detonating with brutal precision against the exposed nape of Reiner's Titan form.
"You spineless bastard!" Hange roared, yanking Reiner from his Titan's nape. In one fluid motion, she slashed away his limbs with surgical ferocity before driving a blade toward his heart. But Reiner's body resisted the final blow, clinging stubbornly to life.
Below them, Eren collapsed onto his back, his chest heaving as blood seeped from his wounds. Shards of glass and debris were embedded in his body, due to the remnants of Reiner's earlier strike that had grazed him with devastating force. He coughed, blood dribbling from the corner of his mouth as he struggled to rise.
"Eren!" Hange shouted, rushing to his side. She knelt, her hands trembling as she tried to steady him.
Eren clenched his teeth, his voice strained but relived,"Hange... Nice one."
Summoning every ounce of strength, Eren pushed himself to his feet. Hange looped an arm around his waist, supporting his weight as he swayed unsteadily.
Mist escaped from Eren's mouth as his uneven breathing and coughing filled the air. Hange frowned seeing him like that.
"You... You still have the letter, right?" Eren muttered, his voice faint but deliberate.
Hange nodded, and for a brief moment, a weary smile crossed Eren's face. "I'm... I'm glad... that for once, she listened to me... and stayed... behind..." His voice cracked, but there was relief in his words.
"Don't worry," Hange whispered, her grip tightening around him. "We'll return together. You have to fulfill the promise you made her." Her words made Eren smile, as he recalled that he'd name their child. He had already thought of a name and no matter how much Mikasa insisted he wouldn't tell her.
Eren's gaze shifted, his eyes darting across the battlefield. He looked like a lost child searching desperately for something—or someone. His voice dropped to a near-whisper. "Levi... Yeah... Hange I'll go after Levi... You retrieve Bertholdt till then."
Without waiting for a reply, Eren fired his grapple hooks toward the top of the wall, the line pulling him skyward. His figure disappeared into the haze of battle.
"Uck..." Eren grunted, his breath hitching as his momentum carried him harshly against the edge of the wall. His grip slipped momentarily, almost sending him plummeting back down, but he caught himself at the last second.
As he steadied his footing and raised his gaze, the sight before him drove the air from his lungs. The battlefield was painted in crimson, the remains of the Scouts scattered like broken marionettes. Flesh and bone lay twisted, lifeless, drenched in a sea of blood.
Eren's bruised lips parted in silent disbelief. His wide eyes darted across the carnage, his heart pounding violently against his ribcage. His voice faltered as he whispered, "Levi?"
A single tear slid down his dirt-streaked face, tracing the line of his jaw as his knees wavered beneath him. Barely holding his balance, he staggered forward, only for his knees to give way entirely as his gaze locked onto the horrifying scene below.
The Attack Titan loomed over Levi, its massive form shadowing the battlefield like a harbinger of death. Eren's throat tightened, a lump forming as he struggled to breathe. His worst fears became reality as he watched the Attack Titan's colossal fist rise, then descend with a bone-crushing force.
"LEVI!!" Eren roared, his voice cracking under the weight of his anguish.
Time seemed to slow as a fountain of blood erupted from Levi's broken form. His body was hurled like a ragdoll, painted in crimson, in the distant ground, lifeless and unmoving.
Eren's legs buckled completely, sending him to his knees. His trembling hands clutched at the stone beneath him as a suffocating sense of despair overtook him. His chest heaved, each breath a struggle as he choked on the raw agony surging through him.
The lump in his throat grew heavier, his mind spiraling as he tried to process the sight of his comrade—falling to such a brutal end.
Eren's trembling hands curled into fists against the cold, blood-spattered stone. His nails dug into his palms, drawing his own blood. The battlefield blurred as tears streamed down his face, his vision a haze of crimson and shadows.
"Levi…"
