Chapter 45: Missing the rounds

POV Callum

Walking through the town I kept up my illusion as to not disturb the festivities going on. The tournament had been great for both trade and new participants. The fourth round was currently going on but I was a bit bored of watching right now, especially since there are no interesting match ups till the finals. I just wanted to breathe in some fresh air before the fifth round then it becomes the finals.

"I have to do this mom" I heard.

"Please Haru your father wouldn't want to risk your life"

Hearing the familiar name of He Tun's kid I turned my head to find someone I both recognized and was unfamiliar to me.

"I need the power to break dad out" The young man argued.

He had long brown hair with some of it tied up in a bun atop his head, a bandana wrapped around his forehead with two locks of hair coming over it to frame his face. He also wore some pretty standard earth kingdom clothing.

"Is that who I think it is?" I said to myself.

"We can't just leave him there, that prison is no place for our people" The young man, Haru, exclaimed.

"People die here, son. Please, I could not stand it if you never came home too" the older woman argued.

"I have to do this mom," Haru argued back.

Making a quick decision I walked over to the both of them keeping my watertribe illusion up. "Your mother is right boy, this is no place to be. The tower can be an unforgiving place especially on the upper floors"

"Stay out of this," Haru yelled.

"Listen to him, he has been in there he knows" Hru's mother exclaimed.

Haru without a word turned around and made his way towards the tower, leaving his mother in the street worried.

Putting my hand on her shoulder I said "I will look after him, here" I handed her a few coins "There is a good inn right down the street use that for now and i'll try to convince him to leave"

"Thank you young man" she said, taking the coins and leaving.

Turning around I ran to catch up to Haru, once I reached him I grabbed his shoulder and turned him around to face me.

"What!"

"If you are that determined to go into the tower then you shouldn't go in like that" I explained.

"What are you talking about?" he questioned.

"Follow me" I said simply.

Walking past him I looked back to make sure he was following then led him to a blacksmith that had his shop nearer to the tower. Walking through the door we heard the standard greeting but I just walked straight up to the counter.

Dropping a bag of coins I had conjured I said "what do you have that will fit the boy?" I gestured to Haru.

Looking into the bag the clerk said "We should be able to find something, give me a second" the clerk walked from behind the counter and over to some armor.

"What are we doing here?" Haru questioned.

"Getting you some armor, even as an earthbender you need protection"

"How did you know?"

Alright time to bullshit this "It's the way you walk, like you're connected to the earth. I can also tell your an amature"

Just then the clerk came back throwing some armor onto the counter. It had a leather base with alternating steel plates covering the chest and vital areas. The pants were just some heavy leather and the helmet looked like it was Turkish from my old world.

"This should fit," the clerk said.

Turning to Haru I said "Go on, try it on"

Hesitantly Haru picked up the armor and threw it over his head dropping it onto his shoulders.

"It does fit," he exclaimed, then went to grab the helmet and pants.

"Take the helmet, leave the pants. Earthbending is all about your stance too much armor before you can properly bend will just hold you back"

"Alright" Haru said, putting on the helmet.

"I hope you don't expect a discount for not buying a piece of the armor" the clerk said sternly.

"Not at all" I said then turned to Haru "How's the armor"

"I think it will work, a bit heavy though"

"Good" then I turned towards the clerk "Keep the change" and left the bag there.

Walking out of the shop I Haru caught up to me armor clanking against the other plates.

"Why are you doing this?" he asked.

"Just follow me to the tower," I said and kept walking.

"What do I need to know about the tower?"

"If you want to get stronger quickly there are two things you need to focus on dungeons and quests"

"Quests? I have heard about dungeons but what are those?"

"They are tasks that once completed give you a reward, usually some experience or an item. Everyone upon entering the tower get's the quest to acquire a class"

"Quests, got it"

"It's the rare ones that you want to look for, few people find them but if you do, they offer significant rewards"

As we got closer I could feel Haru's nervousness practically rolling off of him. Eventually we arrived at the entrance, fortunately it was quiet since the tournament was going on right now. I almost entered but I looked behind me to see Haru standing near the entrance but just staring at it.

"You coming?" I called out, but he didn't answer. "Well you made your choice". I walked behind him, raised my foot and kicked him in the back, sending him through the entrance and into the tower walking in after him.

"Why did you do that?" Haru yelled.

"After everything you did to get here; including yelling at your own mother; I wasn't going to let you chicken out" He had the common sense to look guilty at that.

"So you kicked me"

Sending him the quest I had made while waiting for the armor I said, "Have fun" and disappeared.

Standing halfway up the stairs to the private box I looked at the quest I had sent Haru.

[Quest: The Tower's Avatar]

[The Tower itself has sensed your strong spiritual connection, as the tower becomes more connected to your world it desires to imitate it. You have been offered the chance to become an Avatar for the tower. Your goal is to learn the basics of every elemental bending as soon as possible]

[Rewards: Class change to Avatar]

I also had Haru's status pulled up.

Name: Haru

Class: Earthbender

Level: 1

XP: 0/10

Strength- 6

Endurance-4

Agility: 5

Constitution: 4

Will: 6

Mind: 3

"Well that is going to be interesting, if he doesn't succeed then I can always take it away".

Making my way up the rest of the stairs I entered the Box seeing only Goshen and his assistant sitting in some seats.

"Where have you been?" Goshen asked.

"Just meeting a few people" I replied "How did Zuko and Pakku do"

"At this rate they will be fighting each other in the finals" Goshen's assistant spoke excitedly.

"That will be an interesting fight," Goshn responded.

"Agreed, I am looking forward to the higher bracket, only four people will be fighting" the assistant exclaimed.

Smiling I said "I am sure it will be a fight to remember"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is the chapter for today. In case anyone is wondering there is a difference between normal bending and tower given bending. Bending given by the tower lacks the spiritual element so although on the surface it won't seem any different but for example tower granted waterbending doesn't get stronger under the moon's influence.
