Chapter 125: Sword of the Thunder God
"Lord Jirocho, I'm definitely going to win this!" Idate Morino muttered as he raced along the steep mountain path. Having betrayed Konoha and been abandoned by his teacher, he was full of gratitude toward Jirocho, who had taken him in during his darkest times.
As a light rain began to fall, the steep trail grew slick, increasing the risk of a fall. Wiping the rain from his face, Idate infused chakra into his feet to prevent slipping, drawing on his former experience as a Konoha ninja.
"Since it's raining, the sea winds should have picked up," Idate smiled. He had observed the weather and predicted that the wind would blow against those heading toward Amakusa Shrine by sea, which was why he opted for the longer land route.
"Just a bit more, and I'll reach Amakusa Shrine to get the Dragon-Tiger Orb… victory is as good as mine," he thought, envisioning his impending triumph.
Footsteps splashed in the rain, followed by an unfamiliar voice. "Oh, my disciple, do you still remember me?"
Idate froze, looking up in the direction of the voice.
Standing on the steep cliff was a man with green hair—holding a closed umbrella, wearing the forehead protector of the Hidden Rain. He was staring at Idate with a mocking look.
"A-Aoi Rokusho…"
"Oh, you remember me, my disciple." Aoi Rokusho jumped down from the cliff, his green hair dripping in the rain, though he didn't open his umbrella.
"I didn't kill you before, but now seems as good a time as any…"
After a brief exchange, Aoi dropped the pretense, revealing his true intentions. "Killing you will rid me of a loose end, and the bounty is a nice bonus," he sneered, opening his umbrella.
"Ninja Art: Thousand Rain Needles."
Thousands of needles shot out from Aoi's umbrella, each as fine as a strand of hair. Upon closer inspection, black markings ran along the needles' surfaces—poison. A hit from one would mean certain death.
"Rest in peace, my disciple!" Aoi smirked, confident of victory.
Just as the poison needles closed in on Idate, a calm voice sounded.
"Finally found you."
Before Idate could blink, Furen appeared, blocking the deadly needles, which fell harmlessly to the ground.
"You're… a Konoha ninja?" Aoi's gaze flicked to Furen's forehead protector, his expression shifting to hostility.
Without another word, Aoi launched another attack, knowing they were on opposing sides.
"Ninja Art: Great Thousand Rain Needles!"
Aoi raised his umbrella again, this time releasing an even denser shower of poison needles, forming an unbroken line of attacks.
Furen, unfazed, channeled the chakra of the Seven-Tails, manifesting the Tailed Beast cloak around him. Wings formed from chakra appeared, shielding him from the poison needles completely. With the attack neutralized, the chakra wings shot toward Aoi. He barely managed to dodge, realizing he was up against a powerful adversary. The sinister, chilling presence of Tailed Beast chakra made him widen his eyes in shock.
"This chakra… Who are you?"
"Give it your all," Furen demanded.
Aoi gritted his teeth and reluctantly drew ten short hilts from his pouch. After channeling chakra into them, a golden blade extended from each hilt.
"So, this is the Second Hokage's Thunder God Sword?" Furen's eyes glinted with interest.
The Thunder God Sword was rumored to be one of the sharpest weapons.
Furen resumed his attack in his Tailed Beast cloak form, the Seven-Tails' chakra wings aiming at Aoi. In response, Aoi swung the Thunder God Sword in a precise, narrow strike.
When the Thunder God Sword touched the Seven-Tails' chakra, it indeed sliced a gash in the chakra wing.
"Seems like it really is as sharp as they say," Furen murmured, licking his lips. For a ninja of Aoi's caliber to break through Tailed Beast chakra, the legends of the Thunder God Sword's sharpness appeared well-founded.
"Well then… let's test the limits of this Thunder God Sword."
Furen intensified the output of the Seven-Tails chakra, thickening the chakra wings around him. Aoi's face reddened as he poured more chakra into the sword, desperately trying to slice through the newly solidified chakra wings. But he found himself unable to extract the blade; it was caught, forcing him to continue hacking downward.
As they struggled, a trace of dispersed Tailed Beast chakra drifted into the Thunder God Sword, causing a surprising reaction. The blade's golden hue gained a faint crimson tint, intriguing Furen.
"Could it be that the sharpness of this Thunder God Sword is affected not only by the amount of chakra but also by the chakra's nature?"
