Chapter 34: Chapter 33: War 4 (end)
Narrator's POV
"I see." Dipper simply nodded to show he understood GIFfany's words.
'It makes sense to admit defeat to reduce the final punishment,' thought Dipper, observing the middle-aged man with messy brown hair.
This man wore an "approachable" smile, but Dipper couldn't help finding it unsettling.
"Remarkable." His tone wasn't arrogant, but everyone could feel a certain superiority emanating from him.
It was like a teacher nodding in approval after observing a student's work.
"Are you surrendering too, or not?" Dipper simply showed some stones from the rubble of Aizen's old building.
"Surrender, hmm~" After striking a thoughtful pose, Aizen nodded as if he'd just made a decision.
"Of course, I'm even ready to cooperate," he said, his lips forming a slight smile.
"Four-eyed scumbag!!!" Sara couldn't help but curse through gritted teeth in frustration, watching her biological brother betray their "family."
"Sorry to display such an unaesthetic spectacle, my dear Sara, but do we really have a choice??" he said, dramatically spreading his arms in an exaggerated manner.
"Gravity Falls is on fire and our defenses are practically exhausted..." *sigh* He let out an exaggerated sigh before pushing up his glasses.
"So you're suggesting we betray?!" Sara barked with rage at the bespectacled man.
"You're very intelligent, but you're too emotional," he replied, shaking his head in disapproval.
"Look carefully at this man's appearance."
Although Sara was reluctant, she followed Aizen's instructions.
She knew from experience that despite his annoying, superior tone, he had a gift for seeing through people.
"He..." Sara couldn't finish her sentence, she was so shocked.
"Exactly. He has facial biological traits similar to council members." Aizen shrugged as if it was obvious.
"Only a member of the Pines family can demonstrate such intelligence, it's obvious," he added, smirking before bowing theatrically.
"I salute you, honorable ancestor, Dipper Pines!" he declared in a falsely polite tone.
"You're very eloquent, but you're not showing sincerity," replied Dipper before throwing a stone at Aizen's location, which passed through his body.
"When did you run away?" asked Dipper, frowning.
'This guy managed to fool my life sensors, but I'm sure he was here at the beginning.'
The only explanation was that he'd slipped away during my exchanges with Zod.
"Oh, you noticed my retreat?" His voice no longer contained any condescension or false politeness.
"So, you're not surrendering?" Dipper ignored his words and directly asked the key question of their conversation.
Various explosion sounds were echoing while Dipper and Aizen observed each other at length.
Sara, surprisingly silent, was surprised by the pressure emanating from the eyes and atmosphere surrounding the fake Aizen in front of them.
"Yes, I surrender, but I'll present myself before you again at the end of this war," he finally replied.
This declaration dissolved the tense atmosphere around them.
"Excellent. But next time, avoid staying on this timeline when you play hide and seek with me."
Dipper grabbed Sara and started walking toward an immense building with a casual step.
'I see... He was able to find me immediately after realizing my deception.'
A man emerged from the ground destroyed by the fights between Zod and Dipper.
He wore clothes dirtied by rubble, but he had no injuries. He displayed a gentle smile, but his eyes were empty and devoid of emotion.
This was the true face of Aizen Pines.
A scientist with ambitions going far beyond controlling a simple dimension or organization.
"Dipper Pines, huh..."
....
"You have... finally returned to me," declared a majestic but surprisingly gentle voice, resonating in a place that resembled a cathedral.
An old man, resembling an older version of Ford or Dipper, stood before an empty throne.
Before him, three journals were placed on three distinct altars, each surrounded by a display case.
Anyone would have noticed that the books were extremely old. It was a miracle they were still intact.
"Yes, and I see you've accomplished your mission, but in your own way," Dipper simply stated, observing his environment with a critical eye.
Council member O5-13, aka Sara, was still resting on his shoulder as he advanced toward his meeting with his creation.
AM, however, didn't immediately respond to Dipper. This silence made GIFfany frown.
[Stupid tin can, Dipper is congratulating you!!!], she shouted from Dipper's microphone. But AM simply ignored GIFfany, instead fixing his gaze on the fresco depicted on the cathedral's display case.
It was an exaggeratedly beautiful representation of Dipper extending his hand toward several people wearing desperate expressions.
"Yes, I've accomplished my mission, Master," he finally replied, in a voice mixing pride and bitterness.
Dipper slightly frowned at his words and behavior.
AM wasn't supposed to function like this. He had been created to serve and worship Dipper. It was literally his reason for existing.
'Unless....'
"What's bothering you?" asked Dipper, staying true to his habit of being direct and frank with his AI.
He needs to confirm something.
"Why...?" AM simply said in return.
"Elaborate." Dipper hadn't grasped his creation's question.
"Why create me to give me such an eternal heavy task as innovation and the pursuit of knowledge?"
"Why entrust me with such a thankless task as guiding a race like humans?"
"Why... leave me alone for centuries for an experiment?"
AM finally turned around, setting his gaze on his creator.
With each question containing "why," his voice became stronger, broken by grief, but also by incomprehension.
His age-marked face was bathed in tears. Drops trickled down his cheeks, while his unnaturally bright golden eyes fixed on Dipper with poignant intensity.
Anyone could perceive the infinite grief that showed through in that gaze.
"Hehe."
Dipper couldn't help but laugh softly while advancing toward AM, leaving the latter confused by his reaction.
AM wasn't the only one surprised by the conversation's development, as GIFfany and Sara were as well.
'What's the relationship between AM and ancestor Pines?' wondered Sara, unable to see AM's expression, given that Dipper was carrying her on his shoulder.
Despite this, she could feel the grief in the expressionless AI's voice.
"Perfect. You've evolved and learned," he finally declared, nodding as if to himself.
He wore an expression of satisfaction as he stood before AM.
"AM, you've exceeded my wildest expectations"
As Sienna had understood, Dipper considered neither her nor AM as his "family" or close ones.
Dipper only saw experiments.
"What do you mean?" asked AM while observing the young man before him, unable to hide his confusion.
Despite simulating several possibilities, again and again, he couldn't grasp his creator's thinking.
No, it was worse: AM refused to accept this reality.
His creator was good!
He was merciful!
He surely had his reasons!
AM was insistently self-persuading.
He, who was a machine endowed with cold logic, had lost a part of his rationality by acquiring a "consciousness." His own programming had distanced him from the truth about his existence:
He was just an experiment and an invention created by Dipper, on a mere whim.
"I don't think this is the appropriate place to explain the 'why' to you, but know one thing, AM," Dipper's eyes had become cold and empty, like when he observed an error or failure in the laboratory.
"A tool can be cherished and loved by its creator, but it will remain that, a tool." He passed AM before walking toward two bodies enclosed in capsules next to the throne.
'Mabel and GIFfany's final body form.'
Author's Note: I know, AM doesn't deserve this.
I can't say more about Dipper's personality, as I'm working on it, so no spoilers or info.
