Chapter 10: Breaking the Fortress
The industrial district loomed ahead, a maze of warehouses and factories shrouded in darkness. Xander parked the van a few streets away, the engine falling silent. The three of them sat quietly for a moment, their breaths visible in the chilly night air.
Akira broke the silence. "This is it. Once we step in, there's no turning back."
Xander nodded, gripping the steering wheel one last time. "We knew it would come to this. If we take Victor's hub down, we end his control over the city."
His father adjusted the strap of the small bag slung over his shoulder. "Stay sharpn Victor is ruthless. This place will be heavily guarded."
They exited the van, moving carefully through the shadows toward the massive warehouse that served as Victor's main operations hub. The building towered over them, its high walls and barbed wire giving it the look of a fortress.
Xander crouched near a fence, scanning the area. "There are guards at every entrance," he whispered.
Akira pulled a small gadget from her pocket. I can jam their cameras for a few minutes, but it won't last long. We'll need to be quick.
His father nodded. "We go through the west side. It's less exposed, but we'll have to climb over."
Akira pressed a button on the gadget, and the small red lights on the security cameras blinked out. "Now or never," she said.
They moved silently, sticking close to the shadows. When they reached the west side, Xander helped Akira climb the fence before following his father over. The barbed wire tore at their clothes, but they landed on the other side without incident.
Inside, the air was heavy with the smell of oil and metal. The faint hum of machinery echoed through the cavernous space.
Xander whispered, "We find the server room and take their system down. That will cripple Victor's operations."
Akira nodded and led the way, her sharp eyes scanning for movement.
They crept through the building, avoiding patrolling guards. At one point, a pair of men walked past, their voices low and tense.
Victor wants everything ready by morning, one of them said. "We can't afford any mistakes."
The other man grunted in agreement. "You hear about what happened in the alley? He's furious. Doubled security tonight because of it."
As the guards disappeared down the corridor, Akira glanced at Xander. "We need to move faster. They're on edge."
They found the server room near the center of the building. It was a small, glass-walled space filled with blinking monitors and humming servers. A single guard stood at the door, his eyes scanning the hallway.
Xander turned to Akira. "I'll distract him. You get inside."
Without waiting for a response, Xander picked up a small piece of scrap metal and tossed it down the corridor. The clatter drew the guard's attention, and he moved away to investigate.
Akira darted forward, slipping into the room. She plugged a USB drive into one of the computers and began typing furiously.
Seconds felt like hours as Xander and his father kept watch. The guard returned, his face puzzled, but before he could raise the alarm, Xander's father struck him from behind, knocking him out cold.
Got it, Akira said, pulling the USB drive from the computer. "The system is down. Victor won't be able to communicate with his network or move his funds."
As they turned to leave, alarms blared, and red lights flooded the corridor.
They know we're here, Xander's father said.
Time to run, Akira replied, already moving.
The three of them sprinted through the maze like warehouse, the sound of heavy boots echoing behind them. Guards appeared at every turn, but they fought their way through, using whatever they could find as weapons.
Xander shoved a crate into the path of two guards, sending them sprawling. Akira threw a wrench at another, hitting him square in the chest. Xander's father held off a group with a metal pipe, giving the others time to reach the exit.
They burst through the door and into the night, their lungs burning. The van was parked a block away, but Victor's men were closing in fast.
"Keep going!" Xander shouted, urging Akira and his father forward.
Gunshots rang out, the bullets striking the ground around them. Akira grabbed Xander's arm, pulling him behind a stack of crates for cover.
"We won't make it to the van," she said, her voice steady despite the chaos.
Xander looked around, his mind racing. "There's a maintenance truck over there. We'll take it."
The truck was old and rusted, but its engine roared to life when Xander turned the key. Akira and his father jumped in, and Xander slammed his foot on the gas.
The truck barreled through the narrow streets, the headlights slicing through the darkness. Victor's men gave chase in black SUVs, their tires screeching as they rounded corners.
"They're gaining on us!" Akira shouted.
Xander gritted his teeth and swerved sharply, sending one of the SUVs crashing into a lamppost. "Hold on!"
As they approached a bridge, Xander noticed a construction site ahead. He turned sharply, driving the truck onto the unfinished section of the bridge.
"This is insane!" his father yelled, gripping the dashboard.
"Trust me!" Xander shouted back.
They reached the end of the bridge, and Xander floored the accelerator. The truck launched into the air, crashing down on the other side.
The pursuing SUVs skidded to a halt, unable to follow.
For a moment, everything was silent except for the hum of the truck's engine.
Akira let out a shaky laugh. "Remind me to never doubt your driving again."
Xander smiled, his grip on the wheel relaxing slightly. "We're not out of this yet, but we just dealt Victor a serious blow."
His father placed a hand on his shoulder. "You did good, son. We'll finish this together."
As the city lights faded behind them, Xander felt a spark of hope. The fight wasn't over, but for the first time, victory felt within reach.
