Chapter 5: The Fallen Walls
Chapter 5: The Fallen Walls
---
Five years had passed since Denver and his friends entered this magical world. The city, which had once been their sanctuary, had become both a home and a battlefield. Denver stood in the training yard, the air crackling with energy as he conjured flames in one hand and frost in the other. He had become the most powerful mage of his generation, mastering every form of magic Ravi had taught.
Not all had followed the same path. Kartik, after six months of struggling with spells, had declared one day, "I'm not made for this." Instead, he poured his energy into experiments and inventions, becoming the city's first inventor. His creations—mechanical devices that complemented magic—had begun to revolutionize life in the city.
Priyanshu, though completing his training alongside Denver, had not achieved the same mastery. He excelled in elemental magic but struggled with advanced spells. "You're the prodigy, Denver," he often joked, hiding the sting of inadequacy beneath a smile.
Sam, on the other hand, had walked an entirely different path. Her rare abilities—understanding animals, entering minds, and sensing thoughts—had no precedent in this world. "No one can teach me to control this," she had once confessed to Denver. She practiced alone, her powers still untamed, a source of both wonder and frustration.

The Final Lesson
That evening, Ravi stood in the yard, a weathered staff in hand. Denver and Priyanshu faced him, their expressions determined.
Ravi: "This is your final lesson. It's not about power. It's about control. The spell I'm about to teach you will test everything you've learned."
He demonstrated, weaving a glowing sigil in the air. The energy pulsed and then vanished, leaving an eerie silence.
Ravi: "Now, you try."
Denver and Priyanshu exchanged a glance before mirroring the movements. The sigil blazed to life, brighter and steadier than Ravi's.
Ravi (grinning): "Perfect. I didn't expect you to master it on the first try. Your father would be proud."
Denver's chest swelled with pride, but before he could speak, his hand brushed against something in his pocket. He frowned, pulling out a folded set of papers.
Denver: "What is this?"
The others gathered around as he unfolded the pages, their eyes widening.
Sam (excited): "It's the missing pages from the book!"
Priyanshu (skeptical): "How did they end up in your pocket after all this time?"
Denver: "I don't know. But we need to figure out what they mean."

The Enchantment
At dinner, the group sat around the table, the pages spread before them. Ravi leaned over, his brow furrowed.
Ravi: "This is a powerful enchantment. Are you sure you want to cast it?"
Denver (firmly): "We've come too far to back out now."
They began chanting the spell written on the pages, the room filling with an otherworldly glow. For a moment, nothing happened. Then, a deafening rumble shook the ground beneath them.
Kartik (alarmed): "What was that?!"
The group rushed outside. The city walls, once impenetrable, now lay in ruins, reduced to jagged rubble. People screamed as they scrambled for shelter.
Sam (whispering): "The monsters... they can come now."
The streets were chaos. Families barricaded their homes, while soldiers scrambled to organize a defense. Denver and his friends stood frozen, watching the nightmare unfold.
Ravi (urgently): "Back inside. Now."

The Plan to Escape
Inside, Ravi paced, his expression grim.
Ravi: "Pack what you need. We have to leave the city."
Denver (stunned): "What? No! We can fight!"
Ravi (shaking his head): "Not this time. I promised your father I'd protect you. I can't take that risk."
Priyanshu (hesitant): "But where will we go? The monsters will find us wherever we run."
Ravi: "We'll head to the ancient sanctuary. It's hidden, protected by enchantments. It's the only safe place left."
Denver (angrily): "I'm not a child, Ravi. I can fight. I've trained for this!"
Ravi placed a hand on Denver's shoulder, his voice soft but firm.
Ravi: "And I've trained you well. But this isn't just about you. It's about everyone who depends on you. Sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is live to fight another day."
Denver clenched his fists, the weight of responsibility pressing down on him.
Denver: "Fine. But if it comes to it, I won't run again."
Ravi: "Let's hope it doesn't come to that."
