Chapter 3: Chapter 3 Destroy All Her Persistence
Three years, he intensified his efforts time after time, finally destroying all her resoluteness.
"Gu Nanqiao," his tone, because of the two characters she had just proposed, became through clenched teeth, his face twisted in a ferocious expression, word by word, "you, are very good."
Having finished speaking, he got off the bed, didn't look at her again, and strode out, slamming the door behind him.
In the vast bedroom, only she remained, Gu Nanqiao's long-held defiance finally could no longer be maintained.
Her body slid off the bed limply, tears flowing down unrestrained.
She thought she had become strong enough, steel forged from being hurt by him, that she would no longer feel pain.
But it turned out, she could still be sad, still cry.
"Buzz... buzz... buzz..."
Within a few minutes, the phone in her bag began to vibrate.
Gu Nanqiao lifted her head, wiped away the tear stains on her face, then took out the phone from her bag, glanced at the screen; it was a call from her secretary.
Her finger slid across the screen, and the call connected.
Her voice was cold and indifferent, betraying no sign of choking up, "Hello."
Secretary Song informed from the other end, "President Gu, you have an engagement at seven o'clock tonight with NE President Zheng, booked at Amber Bar's Room 618."
"Okay, I'm aware," Gu Nanqiao responded indifferently.
"President Gu, make sure you rest well, don't overexert yourself," Secretary Song advised with concern.
Gu Nanqiao acknowledged, then abruptly ended the call.
She lay down on the bed, turned on her side, hugged her knees, and curled up into a ball.
She hadn't slept all night, just finished the tender proposal, and was called back by Fu Lingfeng; she was terribly sleepy and soon fell asleep.
...
At six thirty in the evening, Gu Nanqiao arrived at the bar half an hour early.
President Zheng had been waiting for a long time, and when he saw her coming, he hurriedly got up to greet her, extending his hand, "President Gu, what a pleasure to meet you."
"President Zheng," Gu Nanqiao reached out to shake his hand, replying, "Sorry to have kept you waiting."
"Not at all, we've just arrived," President Zheng said, his gaze burning as he stared at her face, "I've long heard that President Gu is outstanding both inside and out, not only beautiful and elegant but also someone whose work ability shouldn't be underestimated. Now that I see you in person, it really is better than what's been said."
"You flatter me," Gu Nanqiao said with a wan smile, sensing the heat in his gaze and feeling a hint of revulsion.
She wanted to withdraw her hand, but instead, he gripped it even tighter.
"May I be so bold as to ask," President Zheng, showing no intention of letting go of her hand, asked a question that was increasingly intrusive, "In large circles, some rumors inevitably leak out. Every now and then, there are rumors about President Gu's unhappy marriage. If that is true, then your husband really doesn't know how to cherish a fine woman. I just wonder if there's any truth to these rumors about your marital discord?"
"President Zheng, sorry, this is my private matter," Gu Nanqiao's face grew colder.
Business is business, private is private; she has always been someone who keeps these two separate, hating others mixing them together.
Besides, this man's questioning clearly had ulterior motives.
"I was presumptuous, I shouldn't have asked that," President Zheng said with an apologetic smile, releasing her hand but then draping his arm around her shoulder, "Come, let's drink."
Gu Nanqiao suppressed the revulsion and disdain in her heart, did not push him away, and walked over with him.
Business socializing inevitably involves these things; she was already accustomed to it.
As long as men don't go too far, don't cross her bottom line, she didn't want to make a scene.
