Chapter 17: Chapter 17: Unbridled Control
Roar!
A deafening roar suddenly erupted.
A massive magical fluctuation surged from outside, crashing toward them.
The sudden outburst immediately tightened Kuroha's nerves. He hadn't expected to encounter trouble so soon after arriving.
Though the task hadn't officially been handed over yet, and the steel mission was technically his responsibility, Kuroha decided to step outside and take a look.
However, before Kuroha could act, Noel was the first to rush out.
As soon as she stepped out the door, a foul wind hit her face.
Seven or eight monsters, each about five to six meters long, with lion-like bodies, tiger-like features, and wings sprouting from their backs, were charging toward them.
The sound of their thunderous footsteps was like a mountain collapsing, shaking the very ground.
The militia, standing on the three-meter-high wooden wall, turned pale.
When had they ever imagined facing so many monsters at once?
In a split second, they missed the best opportunity to form a defense line, and all they could do was watch helplessly as the monsters charged toward them.
Seeing this, Noel didn't hesitate. She immediately summoned her magic book and shouted, "Water Creation Magic—Water Serpent!"
Endless water elements quickly gathered in her hands.
However, before the spell could take shape, it transformed into a water column and veered toward the militia on the wall.
In one instant, it sent them flying.
Watching this unfold, Kuroha helplessly touched his nose. He had already anticipated that Noel wouldn't be able to control her magic, but he hadn't expected it to go berserk.
It was like a wild horse that couldn't even be reined in and could change direction mid-run.
Bang!
One of the monsters crashed into the wooden wall with such force that the wall shattered completely.
The only silver lining was that the water magic had sent the militia flying, sparing them from the monsters' onslaught.
"We still failed..." Noel looked down at the magic ring in her hand, disappointment showing on her face.
When she cast the spell earlier, the ring had helped enhance her control over the magic.
However, it was merely a drop in the ocean compared to her vast magical power. The feeling was like a mayfly trying to shake a tree.
In the end, she couldn't even solidify the magic, and once again, she failed.
Roar!
The monsters' roars exploded like thunder once more.
Noel's expression changed. She snapped back to her senses and saw the monsters charging toward the militia who had dodged the earlier attack.
She couldn't hold back and urgently shouted, "You… you have to act quickly to save them!"
Save them?
Kuroha raised an eyebrow and smiled. "No need. Someone's coming."
Someone?
Noel froze for a moment. Before she could respond, a powerful voice suddenly rang out.
"Plant Creation Magic—Thorny Forest!"
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Thorns shot up from the ground like venomous snakes, rapidly wrapping around the five monsters.
The speed was so fast it seemed as though the caster had been lying in wait, ready to strike.
The five monsters were caught off guard, quickly wrapped up like mummies.
With a series of painful howls, the five massive beasts crashed to the ground, motionless.
"It's the Magic Knight! We've been saved!" The militia members, who had crawled out of the water, couldn't help but shout in surprise.
Soon, they saw a man descending from the sky, riding a magical broomstick. He landed with an air of arrogance.
"This is a member of the Coral Peacock Guild?" Kuroha raised an eyebrow.
In his memory, among the nine major Magic Knight Guilds, many were noble guilds.
The Coral Peacock Guild was one of them.
Although nobles came in various ranks, they were still considered above commoners.
The man before them, if Kuroha remembered correctly, was Roland, a third-tier noble who specialized in plant magic. He was quite an experienced veteran.
"Hmph. Commoners are just commoners. A group of level seven monsters can scare them into disorder. Hurry up and fix the wall! We're leaving soon," Roland coldly snorted.
The militia members, who had been about to express their gratitude, immediately came to their senses and quickly scattered.
Seeing this, Roland appeared satisfied and then instinctively glanced at Kuroha and Noel, saying, "Are you the adventurers who accepted the extermination task from that guy earlier?"
"With physiques like yours, I could crush you with one hand. I suggest you leave now. You're not even qualified to be here. Go back where you came from!" he sneered.
"You should be grateful that our vice-captain decided to visit and treat this as a trial task."
Not qualified?
Noel froze. When she was in debt or in the wrong, she might pretend to be humble.
But being insulted to her face by a lower-tier noble like this? Noel couldn't swallow the anger rising within her.
Before she could respond, Kuroha, who had been standing behind her, slowly stepped forward.
