Chapter 5: Chapter 5: 10 Years Later
Time flew by, and 10 years went by in a flash. A lot had happened since I awakened my magic and, well, got my first kill. First, Yuno stopped being a crybaby—i.e., crybaby Yuno offline, and the cool, handsome, and arrogant dude online. We started our own training too, since the first step for all of us was joining the Magic Knights. My aim was to be strong, while Asta and Yuno wanted to be the Wizard King. Yuno focused on wind magic, while I focused on Chaos Magic. With my suggestion, Asta also started training his body, as I mentioned he might awaken some special sword magic or weapon-related magic, so training his body was a must. I asked Yuno to join us, but he eventually declined.
My training, on the other hand, was divided. I focused on both my magic and my physical prowess. The way I saw it, all mages used Mana Skin to strengthen their bodies, but its effectiveness might depend on the user's base physique. If the body was stronger to begin with, the reinforcement from Mana Skin would be even stronger. While most mages used it passively, only the truly strong ones could actively control it at will, making it far more efficient.
I mastered the active usage of Mana Skin within these 10 years, but I didn't stop there. I kept pushing myself, training both my magic and my body to levels others would find impossible. Maybe except for Asta.
Since Asta and I were training our bodies, the church's usual food, the Nomotato diet, wasn't going to cut it. So, from the day we started training, Luna and I began hunting wild animals and bringing them back to the church to cook. The church's meals now included more than just Nomotatos. If I happened to catch a large animal that we couldn't finish, Father suggested we give the leftovers to the village. So, the extra game helped the village as well.
As for my magic, there was noticeable growth too. My mana capacity and strength had improved significantly over the years. In this world, mana strength and capacity are typically tied to social status—royalty having the largest mana reserves, followed by nobility, and then commoners. But in my case, my mana capacity and strength were slightly above even royalty. It was almost unheard of. Luna had been shocked when she felt the surge of mana from me for the first time. She praised me, saying that I was born to wield the power of Chaos.
During one of these discussions, she explained that the place I had thought of as my "sea of consciousness" was, in reality, my mana core or mana sea. In this world, no one could enter or even see their mana core, so they had no idea what was inside. It was a mysterious space, unique to me. Luna, however, clarified that because of Chaos Magic and her influence, I could enter and exit my mana core freely. No one else had this ability, not even the royals. She told me that my Chaos Magic was the key to it, allowing me to interact with my mana core in ways others couldn't even dream of. She had also helped me gain control over it.
Now, about Luna and me—well, we got real close. Not just because she was lonely in the inheritance plane for such a long time, but there was more to it. Over the years, she started sneaking into my arms at night after everyone had fallen asleep. So, yeah, we'd been sleeping together for the last 10 years. It all started 9 years ago. I guess you could say we were just a window paper away, because on my 15th birthday, she gave me a deep, memorable kiss as her birthday gift to me. We were so close, yet still a line apart. But she said she'd wait until I turned 16, which is considered an adult in this world, before crossing that line.
To be honest, I feel like my appearance had something to do with it too. When I was younger, I was cute—there was no denying that. But as I grew, I became taller and more built. I'm now about 200 cm, and still growing. My physique was athletic—eight-pack abs, strong arms, and a broad chest. My skin was a healthy white, a good contrast with my black hair and golden eyes. As I grew, my face became more defined. The sharpness of my eyebrows, the curve of my jawline, the intensity in my eyes—all of it made me look more handsome than I was as a kid. It wasn't just my strength or my magic that made Luna close to me. It was the whole package, really.
And finally, thanks to the balanced diet, Asta wasn't short either. He was tall, more than enough to match up to the others, even though he had always been a little shorter than me. But he was catching up.
As usual, I woke up early in the morning. I glanced over at Luna, who was sleeping next to me in her normal size. She looked peaceful, her silver hair cascading over the pillow. Unable to resist, I leaned down and gave her a light kiss on the lips. The soft contact stirred her, and she woke up, blinking sleepily at me before reciprocating the kiss with a gentle smile. After a long kiss, we pulled apart, a thin strand of saliva connecting us before it broke.
"Good morning, Luna," I said, my voice soft.
"Good morning, Master," she replied playfully, her golden eyes twinkling with mischief.
I chuckled and got up to head to the bathroom to freshen up. Once I was ready, Luna fluttered over to my shoulder, and together we left the room.
We made our way to the demon skull. As part of my morning routine, I completed my exercise first. My body had become accustomed to the effort, so after a quick workout, I climbed the familiar path up the skull with ease.
Once I reached the top, I dissipated my mana skin and sat down, staring towards the east as the sun began to rise. The cool morning breeze rustled my hair, and I felt a calm settle over me as the world slowly awakened.
Once I reached the top, I dissipated my mana skin and sat down, feeling the warmth of the sun beginning to rise on the horizon. The cool morning breeze gently tousled my hair, and a peaceful calm washed over me as the world around us stirred to life. As I sat there, the quiet beauty of the moment embraced me, and I felt Luna grow back to her normal size, curling up comfortably in my arms. Together, we sat there, side by side, enjoying the stillness and watching the sun rise.
After a while, I turned to Luna, feeling a mix of contentment and curiosity, and asked, "Say, Luna, do you think I've really completed the training?"
She looked at me, her golden eyes soft with affection, and smiled. "Well, Master, you've completed the basic training, but to move on to the advanced spells, we'll have to wait until you receive your grimoire. You see, advanced magic requires the support of a grimoire in this world."
I nodded, taking in her words, and a sense of anticipation settled in my chest. I had been working so hard for this moment, and though I had learned so much, I knew the real challenge was still ahead.
We fell into a comfortable silence once more, simply watching the sun climb higher in the sky. I could feel Luna's warmth against me, and it was a feeling that always made me feel grounded and at peace.
As the sun reached its peak, I sighed softly and said, "Alright, it's time to head back."
Luna replied with a playful, teasing tone. "Okay, Master, but first, you need to kiss me."
A laugh escaped my lips, and I gently cupped her face, giving her a soft, lingering kiss. Her golden eyes sparkled with joy, and as I pulled away, I could see the playful warmth still lingering in her expression.
Reluctantly, she pulled back from my embrace and shrank down to her smaller size, hopping onto my shoulder, her second favorite place after my arms. I smiled, watching her settle in. Then I got up and gave a Magic Knight salute to the First Wizard King's statue and climbed down.
As I descended, I sensed a magic boar nearby, searching for food. The other thing I perfected over the years was mana sense—the ability to use the mana in the surroundings to sense and see things. Seeing this, I said to Luna, "Looks like we'll be having wild boar meat today," and quickly rushed towards its location.
When I saw the boar, I condensed a bow and arrow using Chaos Magic and shot a fully charged Chaos Bolt at the wild boar. Even before it could react, I cleanly shot it through its brain, killing it instantly. I walked up to it, picking it up as I made my way back to the church.
As I passed through the fields, I saw the usual sight: people tilling the ground using magic or watering the crops with water magic. The farmers greeted me warmly as I walked by. One farmer, seeing the large boar slung over my shoulder, chuckled and said, "Ryo, looks like you got a large harvest today."
I smiled back at him, "Yeah, looks like the wild boars have learned not to mess with me. A bit of an overkill, but the village benefits, right?"
The farmer laughed and nodded. "That's an understatement. You've been keeping the fields safe for us, Ryo. We're lucky to have you."
In a way, I could be considered a savior to this village. Since I started hunting wild animals, the damage caused by them to the farmland had decreased significantly. It had almost disappeared entirely. They were always grateful, and it felt good knowing my efforts had made life a little easier for everyone.
As I neared the church, I heard a familiar, enthusiastic shout that caused even the birds to scatter. "Sister Lily!!!" And it continued, "One day I'll become the Wizard King... that's why, please marry me!!!"
Ah, yes—some things never change. Even after 10 years, Asta was still stubbornly insisting on proposing to Sister Lily. His persistence was… admirable, though maybe a bit much sometimes.
As I continued to walk closer, I heard Asta shout again, "I'm not done yet… I'm not giving up… Not yet, not done yet! Let me ask again!!"
Following that, I heard another familiar, but rare, voice—it was Sister Lily's. "Stop pestering me!!"
Then came a loud thud, followed by a splash of water. Hearing this, I knew Sister Lily had used a spell from her grimoire. I could already imagine the scene in my head, and I couldn't help but laugh. Even Luna joined in, chuckling on my shoulder.
When I got closer, I saw Asta lying on the ground in a puddle formed by Sister Lily's spell. He looked drenched but undeterred. In true Asta fashion, he jumped up, full of energy, and exclaimed, "Not yet!!!!!"
This time, Yuno appeared with Recca and Nash, who had grown taller over the years. Trailing behind them were two clingy kids—Aruru and Hollo. They were the church's new additions, with Aruru having joined three years ago and Hollo two years ago. Aruru was a cute, short-haired girl, always cheerful and curious. Hollo, her counterpart, was a shy yet equally adorable short-haired boy who followed her everywhere like her shadow.
Yuno, with his usual composed demeanor, waved his hand. A gust of wind blew Asta back into the puddle with a splash. By this time, I had reached the group and decided to throw in my own commentary.
"How many rejections does it take to get through that brain full of muscles that, as a nun, Sister Lily cannot marry?" I said with a grin.
Aruru and Hollo immediately ran up to me, their faces lighting up. "Ryo!" they called out in unison. I smiled, gently setting the boar down, and patted their heads affectionately.
Recca, looking amused, crossed his arms and asked, "Why are you troubling Sister Lily again, Asta?"
Asta, undeterred as always, shouted back, "Shut up, Recca! And Ryo, Yuno, why are you both getting in my way?!"
Yuno, never missing an opportunity to take a jab at Asta, replied with a straight face, "Let's see. You're noisy, restless, immature, and have absolutely no qualities that appeal to women."
The detailed critique left Asta wide-eyed in shock. "Hey!!! How could you say that to someone you grew up with for the past 15 years?!" he exclaimed, hurt.
Yuno ignored him entirely and walked over to Sister Lily, who was struggling a bit with the laundry. "Sister, I'll help," he said calmly.
Sister Lily's expression softened, and she smiled. "Thank you, Yuno."
Seeing Yuno ignoring him, Asta exclaimed, "Stop ignoring me, you jerk!!" Then he pointed dramatically at Yuno. "That's it. I challenge you to a fight, Yuno!"
Yuno didn't even blink. "No," he replied flatly.
Asta's eyes widened. "Why not?!"
Without missing a beat, Yuno replied, "It's a waste of time."
Asta nearly exploded. "What did you say?!"
Meanwhile, Nash, crouching nearby and using his fire magic to light a flame for the cooking pit, chimed in, "Give it a rest, Asta. There's no way you can beat Yuno. I mean, you can't even use magic."
Asta grumbled and clenched his fists, frustration boiling over. "Rah!!! You'll see! Here, take this—my special move!"
He brought his hands down to his abdomen, pretending to charge some kind of attack. Then, with all the theatrics of a seasoned performer, he thrust his hands forward.
Nothing happened.
For a moment, Asta froze, staring at his empty hands as if they had betrayed him. "Nothing came out!" he yelled in shock. But he wasn't done. "No, I'm not done yet!" He tried again—and again—and again—with the same result every time.
By now, I had gone into the church to grab the tools to prepare the boar. When I stepped back outside, I was greeted by the familiar sight of Asta flailing about, trying his nonexistent "magic" techniques. I shook my head with a sigh. This was Asta's daily routine, after all.
Nearby, Aruru burst into laughter, her small hands clapping in delight. "Hehe! You're so funny, Asta!"
Nash, ever the instigator, smirked and added another jab. "You have no magic skills whatsoever."
Hearing this, Asta stormed over to Nash, his brows furrowed. "That's not how you talk to your elders!"
Nash, unbothered as always, created a small flame on his fingertip and replied with a deadpan tone, "Whatever. In this world, magic is everything."
Asta flinched at Nash's words, his determination faltering as he lowered his hands. But it was only for a moment. His eyes reignited with fiery resolve, and he exclaimed, "You leave me no choice! I'll show you what I'm truly capable of!"
Then, as if possessed by newfound energy, Asta dropped to the ground and started doing sit-ups at an unimaginable speed. "See this? None of you can do sit-ups this fast! I bet!" he boasted between reps.
Nash, unimpressed, crossed his arms and smirked. "Ryo can do it. I bet he can do it even faster than you. So, what's the big deal, idiot?"
Aruru burst into laughter again.
Hearing Nash's comment, Asta froze mid-sit-up, his face a picture of shock and betrayal. Seeing him stuck in such a ridiculous pose, I couldn't help but laugh.
The sound of wind rustling drew our attention, and we turned to see Yuno using his wind magic to dry the laundry. Nash and Aruru immediately ran over to Yuno's side to watch, leaving Asta behind, who had just taken two metaphorical hits in a row—one from me and one from Yuno.
Ever the optimist, Asta sprang up and dashed to the other side of the yard, shouting, "Then leave chopping wood to me!" He grabbed an axe, determined to redeem himself.
By this time, I had already skinned and cleaned the boar with Recca's help. Her water magic made the process much easier, and I had just finished adding the meat to the boiling pot along with tatos and spices. Curious about Asta's next antic, I walked over just in time to see Yuno, who had finished drying the clothes, standing calmly nearby. With a casual flick of his hand, he sent a sharp wind blade toward the log Asta was about to split, slicing it cleanly in half before Asta could even raise his axe.
Nash seized the opportunity for another jab. "I still can't believe you guys are the same age."
Asta, visibly fuming, dropped the axe and stormed over to Yuno. Grabbing his collar, he shook him furiously. "Why? Why can you use magic you jerk?"
Yuno, unbothered as always, replied with his usual calm. "Talent and diligent effort."
Asta froze, the words hitting him harder than any physical attack. He stood there, speechless, as if the world itself had betrayed him.
Just then, the church door flew open, hitting Asta in the back with a loud thud. Father Orsi stepped out, his face lit with excitement. "Yuno and Ryo are the hope of this church!" he proclaimed loudly, completely oblivious to Asta sprawled on the ground.
Aruru's eyes sparkled as she exclaimed, "Yuno, Ryo, you both are amazing!"
Nash nodded in agreement, adding, "It's not a far-fetched dream to see you both join the Magic Knights and work under the Wizard King someday."
Meanwhile, in the corner, Asta sat dejectedly, drawing circles on the ground like a sulking child. Sister Lily, ever the kind soul, approached him with a gentle smile. "Come on, Asta! The Grimoire Awarding Ceremony is coming soon. I'm sure your grimoire will trigger something in you, and you'll be able to use magic too!"
Hearing this, Asta's spirits reignited, tears streaming from his eyes as he looked at Sister Lily with stars in his gaze. "Sister! I'm sure you're right!"
He then turned his eyes to the massive skull on which the Wizard King's statue stood. With unshakable resolve, he declared loudly, "I'll obtain the greatest grimoire, join the Magic Knights, and eventually become the Wizard King! Then I'll renovate and rebuild this ugly, shabby church!"
A vein popped on Father Orsi's forehead as he scolded, "How dare you call this church shabby and ugly?!"
Nash muttered under his breath, "There he goes again."
Luna, watching the entire scene unfold from my shoulder, sighed. "He really is persistent."
I chuckled, shaking my head. "Persistent is an understatement, Luna."
Nash crossed his arms and added with a smug tone, "Only those of noble birth, like aristocrats and royalty, have the potential to become Wizard King."
Asta's fiery spirit flared as he retorted, "Everyone has potential!"
But Nash didn't back down. "We're peasants and orphans. There's no way. And you? You can't even use a simple magic spell yet. You have zero potential. What's more, you don't even have prospects for a job. All the townspeople make fun of you, and you know it."
Asta froze for a moment, the weight of those words clearly hitting him. But then he clenched his fists and turned away, his voice shaking with a mix of anger and determination. "Just wait, damn it. I'll show you all one day."
He took off running, leaving the rest of us in silence.
Sister Lily called out, concern etched in her voice, "Asta! Wait!"
Nash sighed, shaking his head as he muttered, "Is he really older than me?"
I walked over to Sister Lily and placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Don't worry, Sister. He'll figure it all out. He just needs time. He'll be back before lunch, as stubborn as ever."
She nodded, her worry easing just a little, and turned back to her chores.
As I glanced back toward the path Asta had stormed down, Luna perched on my shoulder, her tone light but knowing. "He may stumble now, but he's like a wild flame. Just give him enough fuel, and he'll burn brighter than anyone expects."
I chuckled softly, shaking my head. "That's true. And knowing Asta, he'll never give up. He's just too stubborn for that."
The scent of the cooking boar filled the air, mingling with the warmth of the late morning sun. Lunch would be ready soon, and knowing Asta, he'd be back in time for a hearty meal, even if he was still sulking.
