Chapter 14: The Mask Of Vengeance
The sting of betrayal weighed heavy on Blair's mind as she fled the tunnel. Dominic's gun had been loaded, but his hesitation had given her a single moment to act. A single moment to disarm him, knock him unconscious, and escape with Jax. But she knew now—trust was a luxury she couldn't afford.
Back at her penthouse, Blair paced in her sprawling living room, her mind working at lightning speed. If Vincent believed she was Blair Whales, the multi-billionaire tech mogul, she would always be a target. She couldn't keep living a double life as herself. Her identity was too much of a liability.
If she wanted to take down Vincent's empire, she needed to become someone else entirely.
Blair stood in her private design studio, staring at her reflection in the mirror. She ran her fingers over the sleek, black leather outfit she had custom-designed for this moment. The material hugged her body like a second skin, flexible enough for combat but durable enough to withstand the chaos she would undoubtedly face.
She reached for the mask—an intricate design of silver and black with a sharp, angular fox motif that covered the top half of her face. Her identity would remain hidden behind this mask, her true self concealed from her enemies.
She slipped it on, the cool material molding to her face. She stared at herself in the mirror, feeling a surge of power. She wasn't Blair Whales anymore.
From now on, during her missions, she would be The Fox —a faceless, untraceable force of vengeance.
Blair turned to the blueprint spread across the table in front of her. It was her plan to infiltrate one of Vincent's key locations—a high-tech data facility rumored to house sensitive information about his operations. This mission wasn't just about revenge; it was about gathering intel and crippling his network.
But she couldn't do this alone.
Blair dialed a number on her encrypted phone. The line rang twice before a deep voice answered.
"Blair. I was wondering when you'd call," the voice said, smooth and slightly amused.
"Kai, I need your help," Blair said, cutting straight to the point.
Kai Nakamura was an elusive cybercriminal-turned-freelancer. Blair had crossed paths with him during a tech conference in Tokyo years ago, where his skills had left a lasting impression. He was the best in the game when it came to digital infiltration, and Blair knew she needed his expertise.
"What's the job?" Kai asked, his tone shifting to seriousness.
Blair outlined her plan to infiltrate Vincent's facility. She didn't tell him everything—not yet. But she gave him enough details to hook him.
"I'll do it," Kai said after a moment. "But this isn't charity, Blair. You know my price."
"Done," Blair said without hesitation. "You'll get double when the mission is complete."
Kai chuckled. "I like your style, Whales. Or should I call you something else now?"
Blair smiled behind the mask. "The Fox."
Meanwhile, Blair knew she had to ensure her tech empire stayed intact without drawing attention to her absence. She called in her most trusted confidante, Lena Hart—a sharp, no-nonsense executive who had been Blair's right-hand woman since the early days of her company.
"I need you to take over as interim CEO," Blair told Lena in her office the next day.
Lena raised an eyebrow. "Interim CEO? Blair, you're the face of this company. You can't just vanish."
"I won't vanish," Blair said carefully. "You'll run the day-to-day operations. Publicly, I'll still be here, but behind the scenes, you'll make the calls. I need to step away for a while."
Lena studied her closely. "This isn't about the company, is it? This is personal."
Blair didn't answer directly. "I trust you, Lena. The company's in good hands with you."
Lena sighed but nodded. "Fine. But don't make me regret this."
Blair smiled faintly. "You won't."
With Lena in place, Blair could operate in the shadows without raising suspicion.
Blair and Kai met at the edge of the city, just outside the industrial district where Vincent's facility was located. The sleek black van they were using as their base of operations was equipped with everything they needed—computers, surveillance equipment, and an escape plan.
Kai leaned back in his chair, typing furiously on his laptop. "The security here is top-notch. Infrared sensors, biometric locks, and a patrol schedule that's tighter than a drum. You sure you're ready for this?"
Blair adjusted her mask, her voice firm. "I've been ready for years."
Kai grinned. "That's what I like to hear. I'll disable the cameras and unlock the side entrance. After that, you're on your own."
Blair nodded, slipping out of the van and into the shadows.
The facility loomed ahead of her, its steel walls glinting in the moonlight. She moved like a ghost, her footsteps silent as she approached the side entrance. Kai's voice crackled in her earpiece.
"Cameras are down. You've got two minutes before they notice."
Blair slipped through the unlocked door, her body tense but focused. The interior was a maze of corridors and locked doors, but she had studied the blueprints extensively. She moved quickly, avoiding the guards and bypassing the locks with Kai's guidance.
She reached the central server room, her heart pounding. This was it.
Blair pulled out a small device—a data skimmer that would copy everything from the server without leaving a trace. She plugged it in and waited as it worked its magic.
"Thirty seconds," Kai warned.
Suddenly, Blair heard footsteps outside the door. Her stomach tightened. The guards were closing in.
The device beeped, signaling it was done. Blair grabbed it and slipped out through a vent just as the door burst open behind her.
She moved quickly, navigating the vents until she reached an exit point. She dropped down into an alley and disappeared into the night.
Back in the van, Kai whistled as he reviewed the data. "You're good, Fox. Real good. Not a single fingerprint left behind."
Blair removed her mask, her face calm but her eyes blazing with determination. "Did we get what we needed?"
Kai nodded. "Oh, we got more than we needed. Vincent's entire operation is on here. His contacts, his finances, his weak points—it's all here."
Blair allowed herself a small smile. For the first time in years, she felt like she was one step ahead.
But as they drove away, Blair couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning.
Vincent would retaliate. And the closer she got to the truth, the more dangerous the game would become.
