Chapter 35: 33: Praised By Shunpo Master
Shiro took a deep breath as he prepared himself for the challenge Yoruichi had just proposed. He knew she was leagues ahead of him in both skill and experience, but he refused to back down.
Yoruichi stood across from him, her posture relaxed, her confident smirk as sharp as her reflexes. "Alright, Shiro," she said, her tone light but serious. "Let's see what you've got. And don't think holding back will do you any favors."
Shiro tightened his grip on his Asauchi. "You're underestimating me," he muttered, his crimson Sharingan spinning to life as his focus sharpened.
The Duel Begins
Yoruichi didn't waste time. With a blur of motion, she vanished and reappeared behind him, her palm aiming for his back. Shiro's Sharingan caught her movement, and he spun just in time, his blade intercepting her strike.
"Oh?" Yoruichi remarked, genuinely impressed. "Those eyes are useful, aren't they?"
She increased her speed, vanishing and reappearing in multiple spots around him. The Sharingan tracked her every move, but keeping up with her speed was draining. Shiro raised his free hand.
"Byakurai!" he called out, firing a streak of lightning at her mid-step.
Yoruichi dodged the attack effortlessly, but Shiro anticipated her next move. Using his Shō technique, he unleashed a shockwave to disrupt her advance. The blast forced her to adjust her footing, giving Shiro an opening to strike.
He lunged forward with his Asauchi, aiming for her side. Yoruichi parried the blow with the side of her hand, her movements as smooth as water.
"Not bad, Shiro," she said with a grin. "But you'll need more than tricks to land a hit."
Knowing direct combat was a losing battle, Shiro stepped back and formed a hand sign. "Shadow Clone Jutsu!" Two identical copies of him appeared, rushing at Yoruichi from opposite sides.
Yoruichi's golden eyes gleamed with excitement. "Clones again? Let's see how these hold up."
The first clone attacked head-on, its blade slashing toward her torso. Yoruichi ducked and swept its legs out from under it, causing it to vanish in a puff of smoke. The second clone used the opening to strike from above, but she countered with a quick kick, dispelling it as well.
Shiro used the distraction to form another technique. "Water Style: Water Shark Bullet!" A massive shark made of water surged toward Yoruichi, its jaws open wide.
Yoruichi's expression shifted slightly as she leaped into the air to avoid the attack. "Now that's more like it!" she called, landing gracefully.
Shiro, however, wasn't done. He activated Bakudō: Hainawa, launching a glowing energy rope toward her.
The rope wrapped around her wrist, and for a moment, Shiro thought he had her. But with a burst of reiatsu, Yoruichi broke free, the restraint shattering like glass.
"You're learning," she admitted, her tone almost proud. "But you're still too slow!"
Before Shiro could react, Yoruichi vanished again, reappearing directly in front of him. She struck his wrist with pinpoint precision, forcing him to drop his Asauchi.
"Lesson one," she said, her voice calm but firm, "never rely solely on your blade."
She followed up with a quick sweep of her leg, knocking him off balance. Shiro hit the ground hard, groaning as pain shot through his side.
Using his Sharingan, he tried to predict her next move, but Yoruichi's speed was overwhelming. She landed a palm strike to his chest, sending him sliding across the training ground.
"Lesson two," she continued, appearing beside him in a flash, "eyes alone won't save you. You need instincts to match."
Shiro brushed himself off after his spar with Yoruichi, trying to shake off both the dust and the sting of defeat. Yoruichi leaned casually against a nearby post, arms crossed, her golden eyes gleaming mischievously. Her trademark smirk lingered as she watched him.
"You know," she began, her tone playful, "for someone who spends so much time meditating, you've actually gotten better. I might even be a little impressed."
Shiro rolled his eyes, clearly still annoyed. "If that's your way of giving a compliment, it needs work."
Yoruichi chuckled, sauntering over to him. "Oh, come on, don't be like that. I'm serious! That Water Shark Bullet—very creative. And you're getting faster with your Shunpo. Not as fast as me, of course, but progress is progress."
Shiro sat down with a huff, crossing his arms. "Yeah, yeah, rub it in. I'm still nowhere near your level."
Yoruichi crouched in front of him, resting her chin on her hand, her smirk widening. "Well, duh. I'd be worried if you caught up to me this quickly. But you're not supposed to win yet, Shiro. The fun is in the chase."
"Is everything a game to you?" Shiro muttered, glaring at her.
"Not everything," Yoruichi said, leaning closer with a sly grin. "Just when it involves you. You're way too serious, you know that?"
Shiro leaned back slightly, feeling his face heat up. "And you're way too… whatever this is."
Yoruichi laughed, standing back up and stretching lazily. "Call it encouragement. After all, it's been weeks since I've seen you. I thought you'd have forgotten about me by now."
"As if," Shiro said, rolling his eyes. "You're kind of hard to forget."
"Aww, is that a compliment?" she teased, leaning closer again, her face just inches from his.
Shiro coughed, looking away. "Don't push your luck."
Yoruichi laughed again, straightening up. "Fair enough. By the way," she said, her tone shifting slightly, "those eyes of yours. What's the deal with them?"
Shiro tensed slightly, glancing away before meeting her gaze. "It's… my bloodline. I call it the Sharingan."
"Sharingan, huh?" Yoruichi echoed, her expression curious but not pressing. "Interesting name. Seems powerful."
"It is," Shiro said simply, his tone cautious.
Yoruichi smiled but didn't push further. "Fair enough. Keep it a secret if you want. Just don't rely on it too much—power's only as good as the person using it."
Shiro nodded silently, appreciating her restraint.
Yoruichi's smirk returned as she leaned in closer. "what's this I hear about you meditating all the time? Don't tell me you're turning into a hermit."
Shiro groaned. "It's not like that. I'm trying to connect with my Asauchi."
"Hmm," Yoruichi said, tapping her chin thoughtfully. "Well, if you ever get lonely, you know where to find me. I could give you some… personal lessons."
Shiro's face turned red, and he quickly looked away. "Yeah, no thanks. I think I've had enough 'lessons' for today."
Yoruichi burst out laughing, ruffling his hair. "Relax, I'm just messing with you. Mostly."
Shiro sighed, standing up. "You're impossible, you know that?"
"Of course," she said with a wink. "And don't you forget it."
As Yoruichi finally turned to leave, she glanced back over her shoulder. "Keep training, Shiro. You've got potential. Just don't let it go to waste."
Shiro watched her disappear into the distance, her laughter echoing faintly in the night. With a deep breath, he sat back down, closing his eyes to meditate again. But no matter how hard he tried to focus, her teasing smile lingered in his mind.
