Chapter 38: 36:Kurozai?
The hollow's body twitched violently, as if it could sense the power coursing through it.
"What shall I name you?" Aizen asked, his voice cold and calculating.
The hollow let out a low, guttural growl as it moved, its monstrous form stepping out of the tank. The air around it seemed to thrum with an oppressive energy, the walls reverberating with the hollow's growing power.
Aizen smirked. "You will be called Kurozai,
Aizen slowly reached into his pocket, pulling out a small piece of cloth—a scrap of Shiro's shirt, one that had been torn during their earlier encounters. The smell was unmistakable: the unique scent of Shiro's Reiatsu, raw and unrefined, clinging to the fabric.
He held the cloth up to Kurozai's nose, letting the hollow inhale deeply. The hollow's senses flared, its eyes widening as it took in the scent of its target. Aizen's smirk widened as he watched the hollow react, the creature's power flaring in recognition of Shiro's presence.
"Your target is in Rukongai District 76," Aizen continued, his voice steady and commanding. "Find him. Kill him. And leave no survivors. Everyone who sees you must die."
Kurozai let out a horrific roar, its body vibrating with anticipation.
Aizen's eyes gleamed with cold satisfaction. "Go, Kurozai. Unleash destruction."
With a mighty leap, Kurozai dashed into the shadows of the lab, its monstrous form fading into the darkness. The ground shook under the weight of its power. The air grew still again, as though the room itself held its breath, waiting for the inevitable chaos to unfold.
Kurozai's hulking, twisted form vanished into the abyss of the night, leaving a trail of foreboding energy behind it. Aizen stood motionless, staring into the dark void where the hollow had disappeared. For a brief moment, his mind was flooded with uncertainty. What if Shiro had truly perished at the hands of his creation? What if everything had gone wrong?
His thoughts churned, each one more twisted than the last, and that familiar, cold voice echoed through his mind—the dark side that always whispered from the depths of his soul.
"Trust him. Shiro should be able to injure Kurozai seriously, to make the hollow's power surface. Then, Kurozai will infect him with hollowfication. And then... Kurozai will self-destruct. Perfect."
Aizen's eyes narrowed, and his lips curled into a smile, his hands twitching with unsettling anticipation. He had always been one to manipulate, to push things to the edge. But now, doubt gnawed at him like an insistent pest. His good side—quiet, almost inaudible—spoke up, trying to halt his progress.
"But what if Shiro doesn't survive the hollowfication process?"
Aizen clenched his fists, a tremor running through his fingers. He glanced down at his hands, so perfectly controlled, now trembling with hesitation.
For a moment, the weight of the uncertainty pressed down on him. What if Shiro didn't survive? What if this plan failed?
But as the thought lingered, the cold, calculating voice of his dark side returned, louder, fiercer, pushing him forward.
"If Shiro doesn't survive, then he wasn't strong enough. It's his own fault."
Aizen stood frozen for a moment, feeling his resolve cracking. The battle within him raged on, but the darkness was stronger. He could feel the rage rising, bubbling under his skin, as if the very essence of his being was screaming to let go, to unleash the madness that he had carefully bottled for so long.
"Shut the fuck up!" Aizen suddenly screamed, the words tearing through the stillness of the lab, a primal, uncontrolled release of his frustration. His voice echoed off the walls, but it was not enough to quiet the gnawing feeling in his chest.
He looked around, his breath quickening. The quiet hum of the lab was now deafening. He quickly turned, leaving the lab, the weight of his internal turmoil growing heavier.
Aizen marched down the hall, his steps quick, almost frantic. His mind was a storm of thoughts, but he couldn't allow it to consume him—not yet. He had to maintain control. He had to focus on the plan.
By the time he reached his dorm room, his heart was still racing. He had been walking for nearly 20 minutes, the sound of his own breath drowning out the silence. Haruto was already asleep, oblivious to Aizen's inner chaos. The room felt too still, too quiet, like a coffin waiting to be sealed.
Aizen lay down on the bed, the familiar weight of the sheets pulling him into an uneasy slumber. But sleep wouldn't come. His mind raced, every thought twisted with doubt and anticipation.
Would Shiro survive?
The question echoed in his mind like a curse, growing louder with each passing second. Aizen closed his eyes, but all he could see was Kurozai, the monstrous hollow he had created, and the face of the boy he was willing to sacrifice.
If Shiro doesn't survive...
Aizen's eyes snapped open, his body trembling with a mix of rage and fear. He had pushed everything to the edge, but now he wasn't sure if he was ready for what came next.
But there was no turning back now.
Meanwhile Shiro with Katsu
Shiro sat across from Katsu, the two of them enjoying a quiet moment amidst the bustling sounds of Rukongai. The sun was beginning to dip low in the sky, casting a warm glow over the district as they talked. It had been a while since Shiro had come to visit, and there was much to catch up on.
"How have you been?" Shiro asked, his voice casual but with a hint of genuine concern. He hadn't seen Katsu in what felt like ages, and it felt good to finally catch up with his old friend.
Katsu chuckled, leaning back against the wooden pillar of his small, modest house. "I've been keeping busy, you know—helping out around here, staying out of trouble… mostly." He gave Shiro a playful wink, a grin forming on his face. "But enough about me. You look like you've seen a lot. What's been going on in that academy of yours?"
Shiro's face softened with a smile as he leaned forward, eager to share. "A lot has happened, Katsu. Training's been tough, but I'm getting stronger. I'm starting to get the hang of everything they're teaching at Shin'ō Academy. Hakuda, Hohō, Kidō… You name it, I've been pushing myself." His eyes glinted with determination, though there was a tinge of frustration beneath it. "But the real challenge has been controlling my abilities. It's... complicated."
Katsu nodded in understanding, his expression shifting into something more serious. "You've always been a quick learner, Shiro. I knew you'd adapt."
Shiro's thoughts drifted, and he continued, his voice turning slightly more casual as he talked about his new life. "There's this one person, though. Aizen. He's... different. Mysterious, but there's something about him. Haruto too. They're… interesting, to say the least. We've had our fair share of pranks, especially with Haruto."
Katsu raised an eyebrow, amused. "Aizen, huh? The guy's got that whole 'I'm too cool for everyone' vibe, right? And Haruto… is he really as much of a troublemaker as you're making him out to be?"
Shiro chuckled, shaking his head. "Yeah, Haruto's the one who always comes up with the ideas for our pranks. Aizen's a bit of a mystery, though. He plays it cool, but I'm starting to trust him. They've become like friends, even if it's still hard to fully figure them out."
Katsu leaned in slightly, his smirk turning teasing. "Friends, huh? Sounds like you've got a bit of a soft spot for them. Don't tell me you're falling for Aizen's charm."
Shiro laughed, shaking his head. "No, not like that. But, yeah, I trust them. They've got each other's backs… even if we do mess with each other from time to time." He paused, glancing at Katsu with a more mischievous smile. "And then there's Yoruichi."
Katsu's eyes widened slightly at the mention of her name. He knew who Yoruichi Shihōin was, of course—the captain of the 2nd Division and a legendary figure in Soul Society. "Yoruichi, huh? What's she like?" he asked, his voice a little more serious.
Shiro's smile deepened, a little bashful. "She's… a tease. Beautiful, definitely, but there's a playfulness to her that I wasn't expecting. She's a lot more relaxed than I thought, but at the same time, she's sharp as a blade."
Katsu chuckled, his face breaking into a grin. "Of course she is. You're one lucky guy, Shiro." He ruffled Shiro's hair with a teasing laugh. "A real Casanova, huh? Getting attention from someone like Yoruichi."
Shiro blushed slightly, scratching the back of his head. "I wouldn't say that, but... yeah. She definitely keeps me on my toes." He paused, then gave a small, contemplative smile. "It's funny. I never thought I'd end up surrounded by people like this. Haruto, Aizen, Yoruichi... It's all a bit overwhelming sometimes, but it feels right, you know?"
Katsu nodded, his expression turning more serious as he looked at Shiro with a deep understanding. "I get it. You've always had a way of attracting strong people. I'm proud of you, Shiro. I can tell you've come a long way."
Shiro smiled back, but there was a quiet determination in his eyes. "I'm still learning, still growing. There's so much I still need to do. I won't stop until I can fully control everything I've got."
The two of them sat in silence for a while, the sound of the distant wind rustling through the trees and the occasional chatter of the Rukongai residents filling the air. Shiro had always known Katsu to be a grounding force for him, someone who reminded him of where he came from, no matter how far he'd gone.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the world into a soft, golden twilight, Shiro and Katsu shared stories, laughed, and enjoyed the quiet moments—unaware of the darker forces at work in Soul Society, lurking just beyond their reach.
But for now, in this moment, Shiro could almost forget about the battles ahead.
