Chapter 15: 15
Morning light filtered through the windows of the Second Division barracks, painting the training grounds in soft hues of gold and gray. Yurei stood at the edge of the compound, her silvery-white hair cascading over her shoulders as the wind played with its strands. Shirayuri rested at her side, its polished surface gleaming faintly in the early sun. She let out a slow breath, the weight of the mission ahead pressing heavily on her shoulders.
She had faced many enemies before, but there was something about the Crowned Hollows—how unnatural they felt, even among Hollows—that unsettled her deeply. And the figure that had appeared before… There was something far more dangerous in their presence. Something ominous.
"Lieutenant Hakuhana," came Soi Fon's sharp voice, cutting through the silence. Yurei turned to see her captain approaching with purpose in her stride, her expression cold and unreadable.
"Captain," Yurei greeted, standing straighter.
"We've received our orders," Soi Fon said without preamble. "Another Crowned Hollow has been confirmed in the outskirts of Karakura Town. Its reiatsu is highly unstable and growing rapidly. The Captain-Commander has deemed it a high-priority threat. Our mission is to eliminate it."
Yurei nodded, her gaze sharpening. "Understood. And the figure we encountered before?"
Soi Fon's lips pressed into a thin line. "If that Quincy-like presence appears again, our orders are to confirm their identity. If possible, we're to capture them. But eliminating the Hollow is the priority. Understood? And if it comes down to it, we'll eliminate the figure too."
"Yes, Captain."
Without another word, Soi Fon turned and led the way to the Senkaimon that had been prepared nearby. A faint shimmer of a Hell Butterfly fluttered ahead, guiding their path. As they stepped through the portal, Yurei couldn't shake the unease coiling in her chest.
The Living World greeted them with a chilling stillness. They emerged on the outskirts of Karakura Town, near an abandoned industrial zone. Gray skies loomed overhead, and the distant hum of Hollow reiatsu throbbed like a heartbeat in the air, each pulse heavier than the last.
"This area feels… off," Yurei murmured, her green-and-gold eyes scanning the desolate surroundings. Her hand rested instinctively on Shirayuri's hilt.
"Stay focused," Soi Fon ordered, her sharp gaze fixed on the horizon. "It's close."
The oppressive weight of the Hollow's reiatsu grew stronger with each step, thick and suffocating. Suddenly, a guttural roar echoed through the air, and a massive figure emerged from the shadows.
The Hollow was unlike the last. Its lean, jagged frame gleamed with black, obsidian-like armor that seemed to drink in the light. Its mask was split down the middle, revealing a single, glowing crimson eye that burned with malice. In its clawed hand, it carried a grotesque weapon—a jagged blade of bone dripping with dark, viscous liquid that hissed as it touched the ground.
Soi Fon didn't hesitate. With a blur of Shunpo, she closed the distance, striking for the Hollow's mask. "Suzumebachi!"
Her blade met the Hollow's weapon in a deafening clash, sparks flying as the creature parried her attack. Its speed was shocking, its movements far more agile than its size suggested. Soi Fon flipped backward, landing gracefully several feet away. Her eyes narrowed. "This one is stronger and faster than the last."
Yurei's voice rang out as she drew Shirayuri in a smooth motion. "Hajike, Shirayuri!" (Burst forth, White Lily!)
The blade dissolved into a flurry of glowing white petals, swirling around her in a graceful storm. She extended her hand toward the Hollow. "Hana no Sōzō!" (Flower Creation!)
Spectral lilies materialized in the air, their light intensifying before exploding in rapid succession. The Hollow roared in pain as the blasts cracked its armor and sent it staggering back.
But as the dust cleared, Yurei's eyes widened in alarm. The Hollow's injuries were already healing, blackened flesh knitting itself together at an unnatural speed.
Soi Fon landed beside her, her expression grim. "Its regeneration is even faster than the last one. We can't drag this out."
Yurei nodded, her petals swirling protectively around her. "If we can bind it, we might be able to find an opening."
"Do it," Soi Fon commanded, vanishing again in a blur of Shunpo to distract the Hollow.
Yurei raised her hand, her reiatsu flaring. "Bakudō #63: Sajō Sabaku!" A glowing golden chain of energy shot forth, wrapping tightly around the Hollow's torso and pinning its arms to its sides.
The creature roared, thrashing violently, but the binding spell held firm. Soi Fon reappeared above it, her blade aimed directly for the center of its mask.
"Nigeki Kessatsu!" she shouted, landing the first strike of her Suzumebachi technique. The mark glowed ominously, signaling its lethal power. She darted forward again, aiming for the second strike.
But before she could land the killing blow, a cold, familiar reiatsu washed over them—a sharp, suffocating presence that made Yurei's heart skip a beat.
"No…" Yurei whispered, her eyes snapping to the distance.
From the shadows of a nearby warehouse, the figure emerged once more. Clad in a flowing white cloak, their face obscured by a hood, they exuded the same unsettling energy as before.
"Impressive," the figure said, their voice smooth and mocking. "But you're wasting your energy. That thing isn't your real enemy."
Soi Fon's eyes narrowed dangerously. "Who are you? What are you planning?"
The figure chuckled, taking a step closer. "Your questions don't matter. The balance is already shifting. All you're doing is delaying the inevitable."
Before either Yurei or Soi Fon could react, the figure raised their hand. The Crowned Hollow let out an ear-splitting roar as its reiatsu spiked uncontrollably. The golden chains of Yurei's Bakudō shattered, and the creature began to glow with a blinding light.
"Captain!" Yurei shouted. "It's going to—"
The Hollow erupted in a massive explosion of energy, swallowing the battlefield in light.
"Bankai… Kagami no Shirayuri Enbu!" (Mirror of the White Lily's Dance)
The force of her Bankai's release was immense, pressing down on everything within its range. The entire industrial area—and nearly half of Karakura Town—was enveloped in her domain.
The world itself seemed to shift as her Bankai manifested. The sky shimmered like polished glass, reflecting everything below in perfect clarity. Endless mirrors floated in the air, their surfaces catching and refracting light, casting the battlefield in a haunting, ethereal glow.
Yurei's appearance transformed as well. Her combat attire became an ornate white and silver armored gown, adorned with shimmering petals and crystalline accents. Her katana elongated, its blade now partially translucent and radiant with pure spiritual energy. She radiated an overwhelming aura of grace and power.
"This is irritating," Yurei muttered, her voice colder than usual as her golden-green eyes locked onto the Hollow's fading remnants. "I'll show you a bit of my true power."
The explosion had ravaged the battlefield, but within Yurei's mirrored domain, the Crowned Hollow was trapped. Its movements were reflected infinitely, each mirror capturing its every motion and feeding it back against itself. It had no escape.
The glowing lilies that filled the mirrors began to converge, their light intensifying. "Shinsei Yōka!" (Divine Solar Blossom!)
A massive, radiant lily formed at the center of the mirrors, its petals gleaming with destructive energy. In an instant, it collapsed inward, detonating with a force that erased the Hollow completely.
When the light faded, nothing of the creature remained. The oppressive reiatsu of the Crowned Hollow dissipated into the air, leaving behind an eerie silence that blanketed the battlefield. The once-chaotic industrial zone was now pristine and surreal, caught within the crystalline elegance of Yurei's Bankai. The mirrored domain shimmered faintly, reflecting an endless expanse of fragmented reality.
Yurei's piercing golden-green gaze scanned the area, her stance unwavering. Despite the victory over the Hollow, the tension in the air hadn't subsided. Her hand tightened around her newly transformed blade.
Soi Fon landed beside her, her blade still drawn, her sharp eyes darting from one mirrored surface to the next. "Again?" she muttered, her voice laced with irritation. "He got away? That cloaked figure—how does he keep evading us?"
Yurei let out a soft, almost amused laugh, breaking the heavy silence. She didn't turn to face her captain, her gaze fixed on the infinite reflections that surrounded them. "Got away?" she echoed, a faint smirk curling her lips. "As long as he's within my Bankai's domain, there's no way he can escape. Especially not from me."
Soi Fon shot her a questioning glance, a flicker of skepticism crossing her otherwise unreadable features. "Explain."
Yurei's smirk deepened, her reiatsu subtly shifting as she raised her free hand. Her mirrors responded instantly, their surfaces rippling like disturbed water. "Kagami no Shirayuri Enbu is not just for containment or destruction. Within this domain, nothing can move unseen. Every motion, every breath—it all leaves an imprint." She gestured toward one of the mirrors, and as if in response, a faint trail of white light materialized within its surface, moving like an afterimage.
"There," she said calmly, pointing to the glowing trace. "That's him. Every step he takes is reflected across the mirrors. He might have tried to hide, but I've already caught him."
Soi Fon's expression shifted, a flicker of approval flashing in her eyes. "Hmph. Impressive. Then why are you standing here?"
Yurei's smirk didn't falter. "Because trapping him is only half the battle. I want him to think he's safe. It's far more satisfying when they realize escape was never an option to begin with." Her words carried a dangerous edge, her usually serene tone tinged with a quiet ruthlessness.
She turned sharply, her silvery-white hair catching the refracted light of the mirrors as she vanished in a burst of Shunpo. The ripple in the mirrors deepened, her presence chasing after the glowing trail that marked the figure's movements.
Deep within the mirrored expanse, the cloaked figure moved swiftly, their footsteps echoing faintly in the surreal stillness. Despite their confidence earlier, unease had begun to creep into their movements. They glanced over their shoulder, their hood obscuring their face, but their reiatsu flared slightly—just enough to betray their growing apprehension.
"This... isn't possible," the figure muttered under their breath. Their voice, smooth and mocking before, now carried a hint of frustration. "Even my presence shouldn't be traceable like this."
They stopped abruptly, turning to face one of the mirrors directly. Their reflection stared back at them, distorted and refracted by the crystalline surface. For a moment, the figure raised their hand, as if testing the boundary, but the mirror remained resolute, unyielding to their probing reiatsu.
"Impressive," they admitted quietly. "A domain of this caliber… it's almost artistic."
But before they could take another step, the mirror before them rippled violently. A chilling gust of wind swept through the air, carrying the faint scent of lilies. The figure tensed as the sound of soft, deliberate footsteps echoed behind them.
"Admiring the view?" Yurei's voice cut through the stillness, calm yet suffused with an undeniable authority.
The figure turned slowly, their hooded face tilting in mock amusement. "You're faster than I expected, Lieutenant Hakuhana."
Yurei stepped forward, her armored gown shimmering as her reiatsu flared subtly. Her blade rested at her side, the translucent edge glowing faintly with spiritual energy. She looked serene—almost unbothered—but the intensity in her eyes betrayed her focus.
"You should've taken your chance to escape earlier," she said, her voice calm but carrying an edge of warning. "Now, every path leads back to me."
The figure chuckled softly, shaking their head. "Arrogance doesn't suit you. You might've caught me here, but do you really think your mirrors can hold someone like me?"
Yurei tilted her head slightly, her smirk returning. "You can try."
