Chapter 1
The giant gates of YÙN TÌĀN academy creaked open, Lin shen inhaled deeply, bracing himself for whatever he was going to face within those gates.
As he stepped inside, his heart raced with both excitement and anticipation, this was his first entrance exam into the cultivators academy, and the grand entrance was nothing like he imagined.
As he made his way to join the endless row of other competitors, his father's voice echoed in his mind.
'Avoid getting in trouble, fight hard and pass the entrance exam, the exam is not a game of winning but a game of survival, survive and pass at all cost, your fate lays in your hands'
His fist clenched at his sides as he stood confidently behind the others, it didn't take long for heaven to test him. A sudden force slammed into his shoulder, he stubbled back, colliding with someone behind him.
As he struggled to gain balance, the man behind him shoved him away, annoyed.
"Watch it" the man groaned.
Lin shen caught his balance and turned to the man who had brushed passed him, annoyed.
"You need to watch were you're going" he yelled after the man. The bulky man had an axe strapped to his back, he looked intimidating in every way, bulky muscles, but Lin Shen wasn't Scared on bit. He knew men like this, they always felt at the top of the world, believing no body could cross them and everyone else was insignificant.
The bulky man stopped in this tracks as he heard Lin shen yell at him. The others started to murmur as they whispered to themselves.
"This boy doesn't know who he's messing with." One man said, his voice dripping with mockery.
"He's sure to get punished for crossing Jin Shin." Another whispered, grinning.
Jin shin retraced his steps, turning back to Lin shen who now felt intimidated upon seeing the look on Jin Shin's face, he began to regret why he didn't just keep shut instead of acting brave and confronting a man who was obviously twice his size. Lin Shen's heart raced as Jin Shin stalked towards him. The murmurs faded as the crowd held their breath.
"Hey kid, were you talking to me?" Jin shin's deep voice asked as he looked down at Lin Shen like an ant he could crush within seconds.
Lin shen could feel his hands tremble, but he just clenched his fist as he summoned the courage to reply.
"You pushed me while passing, I just said you should watch were you're going" Lin shen replied in a firm voice as he looked straight up at Jin Shin.
Jin Shin stared at him for a moment, his expression unreadable.
Lin shen gulped hard, waiting for his next move, but to everyone's surprise, Jin shin threw his head back as he bursted out laughing, then he looked back at Lin Shen's hair.
"You've got guts kid, I like that. And don't worry, I'll watch were I'm going next time" Jin Shen said, his grin wide and toothy.
Everyone around were speechless, they all knew Jin Shin, the ruthless fourth lord and the deciple of general Xuan.
"So kid, are you here for the entrance exam?" He asked Lin shen, his voice was now a lot softer and less cold. Lin shen nodded gently.
"Be careful, you're too young to throw your life away, so try your best to survive out there, if you pass, I might consider taking you in as my desciple" Jin shin said, his voice lively, he ruffled Lin Shen's hair one last time before walking away, everyone around looked at Lin Shen's with surprise. They couldn't help but wonder how he won over Jin shen so effortlessly. Some even cast him glares, already planning different ways to crush him in the upcoming trials.
A man in white hanfu soon walked out and stood in front of the participants, His presence commanded attention everyone immediately maintained decorum and stood in order.
"The entrance exam begins now, but first, we need everyone of you to place your hand on this stone to measure your energy level, anyone below 10 is automatically disqualified from the competition " the moderator announced
The crowd of participants chuckled at statement, the lowest a person could get was 30, anything below that was unheard of. Everyone in the crowd were confident they would pass this.
The magic stone was brought forth and everyone stepped out one by one to place their hands on the stone, Numbers floated in the air above each person's head, ranging from 40 to 60.
It soon got to Lin Shen's turn, he stepped forward nervously, then he placed his hands on the stone. His numbers soon appeared on the air.
Laughter erupted around him as everyone pointed fingers.
"12, he barely passed. How weak will he be for his energy level to measure 12" one person in the crowd laughed in mockery, but Lin shen didn't seem to mind at all, all he seemed pleased about was that he passed this level.
Lin shen has always known he had weak spiritual energy since birth, his father told him it was an ancient curse in their blood line, although they had weak spiritual energy which prevented them from learning spells quickly and welding high level weapons, that didn't prevent them from perfecting other techniques.
Once all the other participants had been successful evaluated, a swirling void appeared before them, pulsing in a pale blue color.
"For the first test, you will enter this void and survive in the demon wolf forest for 24 hours" The moderator announced and everyone's face lit happily at how easy the first exam sounded.
"But you're forbidden to kill any wolves, you are not allowed in there with any weapons, any one who breaks this rule will be eliminated" he added, and angry protest errupted from the crowd as they all pointed hands to the moderator.
"You are practically telling us to die, demon wolves are at least level 40 beast, how do you expect us to fight escape them without weapons." Someone yelled angrily
"That's the point, this is not a battle of strength, it's a test of survival, if you get caught, you get torn to shreds, proceed or leave now" the moderator said, his tone final.
The protest died down as the gravity of his words sank in. Lin Shen took a deep breath, bracing himself for the upcoming trial. Soon, the participants began stepping into the void, with one last exhale, Lin Shen stepped into the void, ready to face the unknown
