Chapter 1: The Blue High
It's exhilarating. That's what I hear, at least. The second those particles hit your brain; the experience is unrivaled by any other man-made drug on this planet. Some people call this scientific advancement, others call it the devil. My name is Evan Foster, and I live in the "Crown City" of Fulton. Fulton City is known on the news as the new center of trade for all countries. What we don't broadcast is what this city is truly famous for. Fulton the city you go to if you want to get cheap drugs.
The dealing business is huge over here. Anyone who has any sort of wealth in Fulton is more than likely to be a drug-lord. Now you might be asking, how do such people get away with such things? Well, illegal actions are only real trouble when someone important finds out; and these men and women have no problem hiding their actions.
If you ever want to get a high off of something new or familiar, chances are that you will get offered a little something by every fifth person you pass on the sidewalk. Marijuana went extinct this past year, but I hear that some dealer groups have found a way to create a synthetic version of it, and some have been passing it off as the real thing. The only issue is that this fake version is way more toxic than the plant that it's modeled after. Science, am I right?
Now, I bet you're wondering what drug I was referencing in the first sentence of my story, yeah? Well in recent years, our lovely president Parker Fulton has made some crazy decisions. One of which is the banning of alcohol within city limits. None of these movements as crazy as his so called "leap towards the future." Solar power is so 21st century. We're in the year 2342. The new big new thing is Azure energy, aptly named for the color it gives off in low lighting.
Azure energy comes from a new element that Fulton's scientists have dubbed Dipotyemene. Both the president himself and his underlings are extremely tight-lipped about the element's origins, however. What we do know is that crystalized dipotyemene holds an electric charge extremely well and can pass the charges to other dipotymene particles. Crazy, I know. What is crazier still is the fact President Fulton allows our whole city to be built on the back of this stuff. Our houses, our vehicles, even toys. This was a mistake.
The only issue with dipotymene is that it breaks down and disintegrates over time, leaving behind a grainy, blue residue. And as we do, humanity has found a way to do stupid stuff with it. What scientists don't seem to care about is the effect that the drug has on the human body. The rumor around my high school is that some kid was dared to eat a dipotyemene battery from a toy car. This wasn't a difficult task since the Azure energy batteries are modeled after coin batteries. Needless to say, the kid took the dare and swallowed the battery. But after a couple minutes the kid started to feel dizzy and faint, but never lost consciousness. Quite the opposite. Rumors say that he felt wide awake, even more awake than usual. It felt… good almost. People call this effect "the Rush." It heightens the one's senses and coordination instead of dulling them. It sounds great until you hit the crash, which could kill you if left untreated, but this is easily solved with another hit of Azure.
This story spread like wildfire, and the batteries were quickly recalled and replaced with some with a much smaller amount of Azure. You could eat multiple of the new batteries to try to reach the Rush again, but you would probably die form the other chemicals in the batteries before you did. Not to fear, though. Azure began getting sold on the black market not long after the recall. Convenient, right? To think you don't need to eat the batteries now. And thus, the Azure dealing industry was born.
Now if you think that scientists can drop a drug like this and not have people misuse it, you need to rethink. Eighty-two percent of Fulton's robberies happen while the convicts were on a blue high (high off Azure), and drug just makes them that much harder to catch. The drug dealers don't see a line between selling to adults or kids. A customer is a customer to them. Which is why we have so many young deaths due to Azure overdose. It has been calculated that 1 in 3 modern households have dipotymene pills under their roof. And our kind and gracious president isn't doing a damn thing to stop it.
Now you're up to speed on you Fulton history. And no, this isn't a story about me dealing drugs. I'm the person who single-handedly stopped the illegal Azure cartel. So, buckle up. This is the story of how I died a hero.
