Chapter 6: Outbreak Part 2
I arrive on the scene in 13 seconds. My speed control has improved slightly. At least now I won't flip end over end when I try to stop. I crouch behind a police cruiser (yes, they hover too) and survey the scene.
There are mutants EVERYWHERE. A-Beams are flying all across the area. I take a closer look at the mutants and do a double take. I think the mutants were once members of the student body. As I take in the scene, I see faces I recognize. A girl that I took calculus with, a couple guys who never spoke in debate, and a bunch of others. I take a seat behind the cruiser.
This is crazy. How did this happen? And students? Why would the target be a bunch of kids? There is an explosion behind me, followed by A-Gun shots. No time to think about this, it's a mystery for later. I have to take action, now.
I stand up, the body of a police officer goes flying over my head. I look over the situation again. There were officer bodies everywhere, the ones that were still conscious were behind their cruisers, calling for backup or freaking out. Mutants were throwing things: cruisers, debris… bodies. Then I look towards the building. I gasp. There were still unaffected students and faculty! I look back at the police, they couldn't do anything. No way they could get to them without being smacked around. This is a job only I can do.
I exhale, hyping myself up. I bounce from foot to foot.
"There are people counting on me. No room for failure." I feel the cold flow through my veins. "Just in and out, no sweat." The cold continues migrate through by body.
"Okay. Go!" The cold ignites under my skin, and I jump onto the car. Step one, draw the mutants away from the building.
I draw in a big breath. "HEY UGLIES!"
Most of the mutants turn to look at me. I crouch down, ready to move at the drop of a pin.
"Come and get me."
The mutants all rush me. It couldn't have worked any better. I take another breath and leap off of the car. But I overshoot. Like a lot.
I soar up… and right through the 3rd story window. Needless to say, I don't stick the landing. Who am I, Batman? Not even close. Instead, I flop end over end and slide to a halt in the middle of the hall. I cough for a second and dust myself off. The power seems to be out on the third floor. No… the lights were destroyed. It's dim, but not pitch black. There is a light glow from the dipotymene debris scattered all of the floor from the lights. My head feels foggy, but I shake it out and refocus. There is a group of students and faculty on the ground floor of the CFHS. I have to get down there and get them out ASAP. I start to make my way down the hall. There is a staircase on the right-hand side at the end of it. I can get to the bottom floor from there!
"Perfect," I whisper, and I begin to pick up my pace. Then suddenly…
"Hello?" I hear a voice from one of the classrooms behind me.
I slowly turn around and look at where the voice could be coming from.
"Please help me…" the voice says. I follow it, peaking into the classroom it seemed to have been coming from. There is a girl, probably a freshman, in the far back corner.
"Hey, I'm here." I say, approaching her. "Can you move?"
"No, stay back," she says. I stop advancing.
"What's wrong? I'm here to help."
"I'll… I'll kill you. You have to run."
"What?" I say, confusedly.
The girl looks up at me. Her face is deep purple with blue veins. She's a mutant.
I do a double take, then my wits return. I extend my hand. "Come with me, I'll get you help."
She shakes her head. "I don't want to kill any more people. Martin… he…" She breaks down into tears.
I take a step closer. "It'll be okay, I'll get you out of here."
Suddenly, she kicks me away. I slam into the back wall.
"What the…"
The girl is writhing against the wall now.
"You have to… run…" She lets out a guttural scream. "Run now!!"
I stand up, ready to move. The girl goes limp, but I don't let my guard down.
"Hello? Are you… alive?"
The girl looks up at me. Her eyes are burning blue. She's completely a mutant now.
"Crap…" I growl.
The girl leaps at me, tackling me. She immediately begins ripping at my hair. I scream, struggling to get a hold on her. After a few attempts, I throw her off and scramble to my feet.
She gets up, as well, then grunts at me.
"I don't have time for this," a pant. "I have to get to the ground floor."
The mutant girl lunges at me again. I was able to duck her this time and get out the door. I make my way to the door and try to open it. It's stuck.
"Damn!" I keep trying, but with no luck.
The mutant girl emerges from hall, skittering towards me on all fours at an upsettingly quick pace. I have to get to the lower floors! I take a deep breath.
"I'm not dying up here," the cold fills my body. "Let's go!" Then I ignite it!
The girl rushes at me, trying to claw my eyes out. I dodge each strike with ease, almost as if the mutant girl was moving in slow motion. Awesome…
I dodge the last strike, grabbing the girl's arm, flipping her over my head and throwing her against the wall. Well… through the wall would be more precise. I accidentally threw her though the wall and into the classroom on the other side. I guess I don't know my own strength.
"Oops," I say. I turn my focus back to the door. "Now it's your turn."
I shift my weight to my left leg and kick the door as hard as I can. I blow the door off its hinges with one strike. I pump my fist and speed down the stairs. I blast out of the stairwell door, into the ground floor hall. I stumble to a halt in front a small group of shocked students. They huddle closer together and look at me with shocked expressions.
I clear my throat and put on my most commanding voice.
"I am here to rescue you."
The student's expressions don't chance, so I try again.
"I am here to help you get out safely."
"Aren't you one of them?" a member of faculty pipes up.
"I am not."
"Then why are your eyes glowing?" says a student.
I start to answer, then I pause. I have no clue how to answer that,
"Look, do you want to die?" I ask bluntly.
They all gasp and shake their heads.
"Then I strongly suggest you come with me."
The students were quiet after that.
I jog over to the front doors, which is now just a gaping hole in the front of the building. I look out, the mutants seem to have dispersed some, with just 3 of them in front of the school. I turn back to the group behind me.
"We should be able to make it out now," I say. "There are way fewer monsters out than earlier. I'll be able to take you in groups of three."
The group suddenly begins screaming. For a moment I look at them confusedly. Then I whip around, just in time to see a cruiser flying directly at me. I dive to the side, and the vehicle just misses me. I spring back up and I see that two of the mutants are sprinting up towards us.
"Shit," I mutter. The people behind me start screaming and crying.
"Stay there and stay close together," I yell over them. "I'll handle this."
These mutants are both huge, maybe 7 feet each? They must have been jocks. But why'd they grow? No other mutants experienced growth in size. Doesn't matter, I'll just have to hit them harder.
I crouch down, feeling my power surge through me. Mutant one goes to tackle me low. I leap over him with ease, but I fail to dodge the punch that the second one was throwing. I take the full brunt of the attack and go flying down the hall. I tumble and eventually come to stop.
"That really hurt…" I say, picking myself back up. I look back down the hall; I had been knocked pretty far. It's a wonder my ribs aren't broken. One mutant is staring me down, the other is focused on the group of bystanders. I can't let any of them get hurt.
"Damn." I tear down that at the mutant in front of me. Just before I reach him, I leap in the air, bringing my knees to my chest. Then I kick out, sending the large mutant flying out the front of the building. He lands on top of a crushed police cruiser and doesn't get back up. One down.
The second mutant just watched me fly by and launch his buddy out of the building and was looking pretty pissed off. He roars at me and charges, his fist cocked back ready to beat my face in. He throws the punch, but I dodge with ease and counter his punch with one of my own, an uppercut to the chin. The mutant is caught off guard and staggers backwards. I have my hands in guard like a boxer, even though I have no experience boxing.
"Is that all you got?" I taunt.
The monster looks at me but makes so signs of advancing. Is he scared? Just as that thought crosses my mind I'm tackled from behind. My face hits the floor and whatever is on top of starts screeching.
"I kill you! I'll kill you!"
Is that the mutant girl from earlier? I really don't want to have to deal with her anymore.
I get into a push up position and push my body upwards into he air, throwing her off. She lands on her feet a few paces behind me, and mutant jock #2 approaches, rejoining the fight.
At this point I'm starting to get a little tired. My breathing begins to become labored. My goggles are cracked, too. I glance around at me and see the bystanders, still huddled in a corner. I just remembered my main goal. Get them out of here. I need a plan and fast.
"Okay everyone," I say to the group of people. "When I say 'now,' you all need to make a break for it out the front of this building. Got it?"
The people in the crowd nods. Good. Now I just need to make an opening. I power up, but this surge is weaker than last. Crap. I need to make this one count.
"I got this," I whisper to myself. "Just one more."
I glance behind me. The girl seems to be waiting for me to make the first move. Fine. I exhale, then take off!
I rush the mutant girl first. I have to take her down before she can react! In a fraction of a second, I'm up close to the mutant girl. I throw a powered punch right at the mutant girl's face. My punch connects, and I send her flying down the hall. She collides with wall at the end and collapses in a heap.
I slide for a second, then explode in the opposite direction. Now the big one! As I'm coming in, the mutant tries to stop me with a wide punch. I duck in, and now I'm right where I want to be. One movement. With one combo I'll take him out! I leap into the air, connecting my knee with the mutant's chin. Then I come down on his face with a heavy punch, knocking him into the floor.
"Everyone, go!!" I yell. The bystanders then scramble to their feet and funnel out the building. The police then come out to meet them. They all made it safely.
I watch them leave, panting. I feel my power and adrenaline fading.
"I did it…" I say, then I pass out.
