Chapter 35: Asking Permission
Hun Xiu didn't understand why Hun Tian Di had suddenly become so cold toward him. Still, he respectfully said, "Father, I have something to say."
"Speak." Hun Tian Di glanced at Hun Xiu and responded indifferently.
As he looked at Hun Xiu, Hun Tian Di couldn't help but recall what had transpired earlier. His most outstanding son—the one he had always taken pride in—was willing to lower himself just to make a young girl happy. The memory only deepened his disappointment.
If he had foreseen such behavior, he wouldn't have gone out of his way to heal Hun Xiu the day before. Perhaps letting him remain bedridden a while longer would have given him time to reflect.
To think his son would give up his dignity for such trivial matters—this was the result of all his teachings? His disappointment festered.
Yes, Hun Xiu was born with a super divine bloodline and unmatched potential, but beyond that, he seemed aloof, socially awkward, and devoid of other remarkable qualities.
Unaware of his father's thoughts, Hun Xiu maintained his respectful demeanor and said, "Father, I wish to leave the Hun Clan for a while and travel the continent.
"Leave the Hun Clan?"
Hun Tian Di narrowed his eyes, his gaze lingering on Hun Xiu. Silence enveloped the study room, broken only by their steady breaths.
Within Hun Tian Di's mind, a storm of emotions brewed. Why would Hun Xiu wish to leave? He was better off staying within the clan, cultivating under their protection.
Finally, Hun Tian Di broke the silence, his sharp gaze fixed on Hun Xiu. "Why do you wish to leave?"
Hun Xiu met his father's piercing eyes and replied with unwavering determination, "The continent is vast, and I wish to see it for myself."
Of course, Hun Xiu's true reason had little to do with curiosity. He needed to follow Gu Xun'er.
He knew he couldn't stop her from going to the Xiao Clan. Nor could he approach Gu Yuan and plead for her to stay—it would be both futile and foolish, as it would only arouse suspicion from one of the continent's top powerhouses. Without sufficient strength, such suspicion would undoubtedly bring him trouble.
Having deliberated carefully before entering his father's study, Hun Xiu made up his mind. Gu Xun'er's mission to infiltrate the Xiao Clan and retrieve the Tuoshe Ancient Emperor Jade was inevitable. But she was still young, and she was his fiancée. He couldn't stand idly by and let her face the dangers alone.
If something happened to her, Hun Xiu knew he would regret it for the rest of his life.
Though it contradicted his original plan of peaceful cultivation, Hun Xiu resolved to prioritize Gu Xun'er above all else.
Hun Xiu thought bitterly, If I don't act now, what will happen years from now? Will Gu Xun'er return to me, hand-in-hand with another man, saying, "Brother Hun Xiu, this is Brother Xiao Yan, the one I truly love"?
Never.
As far as Hun Xiu was concerned, Gu Xun'er belonged to him and no one else. The mere thought of another man in her life filled him with rage.
He had to seize this opportunity while he still could. Waiting seven more years to reach adulthood? By then, it would be too late.
Hun Tian Di silently mulled over Hun Xiu's words. Finally, he broke the silence with a calm yet icy tone. "You know the rules. No one can leave the Hun Clan until they reach adulthood. You are only nine years old. You have to wait seven years."
"I understand," Hun Xiu said, meeting his father's gaze firmly, "but I cannot wait for seven years."
Seven years was far too long. By then, too many variables could come into play. Gu Xun'er would have spent years among the Xiao Clan, alongside Xiao Yan. Relationships might form, and their marriage contract would mean nothing.
Time and opportunity wait for no one, and Hun Xiu understood this better than most.
After another long silence, Hun Tian Di finally spoke. "If you wish to leave, there is one condition. Win first place in the clan's young master competition, and you will earn the right to leave."
Hun Xiu's heart sank. His father hadn't agreed—he'd merely dangled a chance before him. And a slim chance at that.
What Hun Xiu truly desired wasn't just an opportunity; he wanted Hun Tian Di's approval.
