Chapter 80: Yanran, Are You Sure?
(Please give some power stone.)
Yun Xiu stood silently, observing everything below in the hall. His presence was imperceptible to anyone present, yet he heard every word of their conversation.
Murmuring to himself, Yun Xiu said, "What was supposed to come has finally arrived. But it seems to have come earlier this time."
His gaze shifted away from the hall to another figure—Xiao Yan, who was being led by the servants towards the main hall. Xiao Yan, seemingly preparing for a pivotal encounter, quickened his pace.
Raising his hand slightly, a black flame flickered at Yun Xiu's fingertips. "I wonder if the current Flame Emperor can withstand this flame?" he muttered.
Yun Xiu considered striking back at Xiao Yan for the minor trick he'd just played on him. If he didn't teach him a lesson, things might get complicated later on.
Xiao Yan, oblivious to all this, continued walking. As he moved, he couldn't help but notice the vibrancy of the roadside flowers.
Suddenly, Boom!
The previously clear sky darkened abruptly, and thunder roared as lightning streaked across the heavens. Thick dark clouds gathered ominously, casting shadows over Wutan City.
"Huh?" Xiao Yan stopped in his tracks and looked up at the sky. "Has the weather changed?"
He only saw the swirling clouds and erratic lightning flashing through them. He didn't notice Yun Xiu at all.
"Is it going to rain?" Xiao Yan murmured before quickening his steps, determined to reach the hall before the downpour began.
---
Yun Xiu's Perspective:
As the thunder intensified, Yun Xiu looked up at the tumultuous sky. "Is this thunder coming for me?" he murmured.
Before he could react further, a bolt of lightning struck down, barely missing him. This confirmed his suspicion—it was indeed aimed at him.
With a swift movement, Yun Xiu evaded the lightning. "I can't let myself get hit. If I do, they'll detect my presence," he thought grimly.
Above Wutan City, a strange spectacle unfolded as thunder rolled and lightning crackled. Oddly, the lightning bolts dissipated halfway down, vanishing into thin air.
---
In the Hall:
The distant thunder outside was audible to everyone inside the hall, but no one paid it much attention. Each person seemed to be lost in their own thoughts.
Xiao Zhan and the three elders of the Xiao family were waiting for Yun Yun's response.
Why had the Yunlan Sect involved the humble Xiao family in such a matter? With their influence, they could handle almost anything on their own.
"Yanran, go ahead," Yun Yun finally said, turning the decision over to Nalan Yanran.
After all, this was her engagement. It was only right for her to make the call.
Yun Yun had no need to concern herself with the Xiao family's pride—after all, the two families were worlds apart in status.
"Niece Nalan, if you have any requests, please speak freely. The Xiao family will do everything in its power to meet them," Xiao Zhan assured.
"I…"
"This…"
Nalan Yanran hesitated. Just a few days ago, she was determined to break off this engagement.
However, after spending some time with Xiao Yan, her perspective had changed.
She found that Xiao Yan wasn't as bad as she'd imagined. He was, in fact, rather impressive.
Breaking the engagement now seemed unnecessary. More than that, she couldn't bear the thought of the shame it would bring to Xiao Yan and his family.
Yet, here she was, caught between her past resolve and her new feelings.
At this moment, Xiao Yan entered the hall. Dressed in a black robe, he respectfully greeted Xiao Zhan and the three elders.
"Father. Elders," Xiao Yan said, bowing slightly.
"Yan'er, you're here," Xiao Zhan said with a relieved smile. Xiao Yan was the pride of the Xiao family—a genius rarely seen in a hundred years.
His arrival seemed to bring comfort to Nalan Yanran, who quickly moved to his side.
"Brother Xiao Yan," she greeted with a bright smile.
"Yanran," Xiao Yan replied warmly.
This exchange left Yun Yun and Nalan Su visibly stunned. They exchanged puzzled glances.
What was going on?
Yun Yun shot a questioning look at Nalan Su, who shook his head in confusion.
Didn't Nalan Yanran come here to break off the engagement? Why did she now seem so close to Xiao Yan?
"Brother Xiao Yan, this is my father," Nalan Yanran said, gesturing towards Nalan Su. "And this is my teacher," she added, nodding toward Yun Yun.
"Uncle Nalan. Teacher," Xiao Yan greeted respectfully.
Yun Yun and Nalan Su acknowledged him with polite nods.
Their initial assessments of Xiao Yan were favorable. At such a young age, he was already at the eighth level of Dou Zhi. His potential was undeniable.
Nalan Su, in particular, began to reevaluate his stance. Perhaps having Xiao Yan as a son-in-law wasn't such a bad idea.
After the introductions, Nalan Yanran leaned close to Yun Yun and whispered, "Teacher, I… I like Xiao Yan."
Her voice, though soft, was easily heard by everyone present.
This revelation surprised Xiao Zhan and the elders, but they remained composed. After all, the engagement was already in place.
However, Nalan Su's expression briefly changed before he managed to mask it.
He was stunned. What had caused such a drastic shift in his daughter's feelings?
Yun Yun looked at Nalan Yanran and asked seriously, "Yanran, are you sure?"
