Cannon fodder in the Interstellar

Chapter 297 - Picking and Choosing

The eight young people worked together, and in less than five minutes, the more than twenty vehicles blocking the street were lifted to the side, clearing a path for the RV to pass through.

One could say that even bulldozers couldn’t do it as efficiently as they did.

During this time, around sixty or seventy zombies that had attacked were kicked down by the young people, and they couldn’t get back up.

Liu Yang saw a silver-haired boy coming out of another RV, holding a sharp dagger. Among the fallen zombies, he carefully picked and killed them, extracting the crystal cores from their brains.

Every time this boy made a move, he successfully extracted a crystal core. His actions were swift and smooth—he would insert the dagger, then quickly pull out the core, dropping it into a bag he held in his left hand.

“Many people say the crystal cores are valuable, but up until now, no one has explained what they are really used for. Do you think they know something about them, which is why they’re specifically collecting them?” Wang Miaomiao whispered to Liu Yang.

“They must have a reason for doing this. If we get the chance, we should collect some too,” Liu Yang replied.

The RV continued driving towards the center of the city. This time, they didn’t encounter any roadblock incidents. After about thirty minutes of driving, the RV finally came to a stop again.

“There’s a large shopping mall here. Let’s get off and collect some daily necessities. I heard that the harsh winter will arrive soon,” Ruo Manni said.

This time, Ruo Manni also got off the vehicle. She was the first to exit, and as soon as she stepped out, a zombie lunged at her. Wang Miaomiao saw from the window that, like her companions, the young girl swiftly kicked the zombie away.

Since it was a large shopping mall, it was likely that many survivors had come here to search for supplies, but unfortunately, there were also many zombies. After they parked the vehicle, several hundred zombies immediately surrounded the mall and the surrounding area.

Wang Miaomiao and Liu Yang’s hearts skipped a beat. If it were their previous team, they definitely wouldn’t have been able to handle so many zombies.

However, this group of people remained calm as they drew their weapons and charged into the horde. Ten of them quickly wiped out over two hundred zombies in less than five minutes. The silver-haired boy followed behind them, collecting crystal cores from the fallen zombies.

Their movements were steady and calm. Zombies that continued to be attracted to the scene were also easily dispatched with a slash to the neck.

Ruo Manni looked back at Wang Miaomiao and Liu Yang. “Come on in.”

Wang Miaomiao and Liu Yang noticed that although the young girl had killed over ten zombies, she was still completely clean, with not a drop of blood on her. The same was true for her companions.

This made the two of them, who had only killed two zombies and already had some blood splattered on them, feel very inferior.

For Wang Miaomiao and Liu Yang, every trip into the city to search for supplies was a life-or-death battle, and many of their teammates had died each time. They had survived up until now because of their strong abilities, but even so, they had faced countless life-threatening situations.

But for this team, it seemed like they were just carrying out a very easy task. Surrounded by hundreds of zombies, they dealt with them effortlessly without even getting a speck of dirt on them.

Wang Miaomiao shamelessly followed behind Ruo Manni. The zombies were no threat to her, and after Ruo Manni collected the supplies, she intentionally left some for Wang Miaomiao. Wang Miaomiao, without hesitation, took them.

This large shopping mall was probably located closer to the city’s outskirts. The food on the first floor had already been taken by other survivors, leaving only scattered daily necessities.

However, the bedding and clothing items on the upper floors were still neatly arranged. Perhaps it was because there were many zombies upstairs, and no one dared to risk their lives to go up and take these items.

Since Wang Miaomiao was closely following Ruo Manni, she noticed that the young girl gathered everything from the upper floors. When they reached the first floor, she left some winter clothes and blankets behind.

Was this meant to make it easier for other survivors to collect? Wang Miaomiao hadn’t expected this young girl to have such a considerate side.

There were many large shopping malls in the big city. They walked for two hours towards the city center and looted five large malls in total.

In all five malls, there was no food left. Wang Miaomiao only found some spices, while the rest were daily necessities and tools.

As before, Ruo Manni repeated the same process, leaving a third of the supplies she collected from the upper floors on the first floor.

Along the way, Liu Yang roughly counted. Their group had killed about three thousand zombies and gathered seven to eight hundred crystal cores.

Liu Yang had only killed a few dozen zombies, but his arms felt sore, while the others still looked fresh and unfazed.

Throughout their journey, they had not encountered any survivors.

The sixth large shopping mall they reached was in the city center. It was particularly large, with six floors, and almost every kind of product could be found there.

This mall had an unusually high number of zombies. On the first floor alone, they had killed almost a thousand.

Seeing so many zombies, Liu Yang and Wang Miaomiao felt a sense of hope. With so many zombies, most mercenary teams wouldn’t dare to come, so this mall likely still had a good amount of food left.

As they continued looting, although they gathered a wealth of supplies, the amount of food they obtained was very scarce, not enough for the two of them to last for ten days. They were desperately hoping to collect more food.

Sure enough, they weren’t disappointed. While the easily portable foods like biscuits and instant noodles were already gone, there was still plenty of canned and bottled food like luncheon meat and eight-treasure porridge.

These items were heavy and took up space, so no one dared to take them unless the vehicle had enough room. It was likely that because they were in the city center, with so many zombies around, these supplies were left behind.

If this had been in the past, Liu Yang and his group would have taken some of these items without hesitation. But now things were different—Wang Miaomiao had a storage ring, and the two of them carefully selected what food they could still use.

However, with this, Wang Miaomiao’s storage ring was full, so she no longer went upstairs.

Ruo Manni had been personally protecting Wang Miaomiao along the way. Since Wang Miaomiao wasn’t going upstairs to the mall, Ruo Manni also stayed downstairs and let the others go up to gather supplies.

On the first floor, only Ruo Manni and Hebrew Adam stayed behind as guards, while Wang Miaomiao and Liu Yang continued to pick through the items.

At that moment, Ruo Manni suddenly furrowed her brows. Hebrew Adam almost simultaneously sensed something and looked toward the direction they had come from.

“There’s the sound of vehicles, and a lot of them,” Hebrew Adam said.

“Ten vehicles, with 118 people inside,” Ruo Manni gave a more detailed report.

What Ruo Manni didn’t say was that she had “seen” the people leading the group. Their aura of violence and menace was unmistakable, clearly marking them as troublemakers. If they also stayed at the mall, conflict was likely to arise.

Sure enough, these people deliberately blocked the two RVs, and their eyes were full of greed as they eyed the vehicles. It was clear they intended to steal them.

The supermarket door on the first floor had been opened by these people, who weren’t afraid of the zombies, so it had remained open. Liu Yang and Wang Miaomiao also witnessed this scene.

The two of them noticed that there were over a hundred people coming, and more than a dozen of them were holding handguns. Realizing that their group only had fourteen people, their hearts immediately sank.
