Cannon fodder in the Interstellar

Chapter 55 - Surprise

The spaceship from the Xuan Gu First Military Academy would secretly arrive at Topaz Star tonight to pick up Ruo Manni for special training in the central star region.

Captain Lin informed Ruo Manni that this was a ship personally assigned by the Crown Prince, which lifted a heavy weight off her mind.

Who was the Crown Prince? Ruo Manni, a little fan of the prince from her favorite novel, believed that no matter how capable her secret enemies were, unless they were the king or unless she encountered some cosmic anomaly, her safety was assured.

Captain Lin told Ruo Manni he would send someone to pick her up at the military headquarters in two hours, urging her to hurry and pack.

After receiving the notification, Ruo Manni ended the call with Captain Lin and immediately began to gather her things.

In her judgment, once she left, she probably wouldn’t return for years, so she needed to take everything she could.

However, imagination was rich, while reality was harsh.

Ruo Manni had only a five-cubic space ring. After storing her belongings in the holographic game chamber and with the robot butler, she had limited space left, making it impossible to take everything.

While other items were negotiable, what she was most reluctant to leave behind were the items in Teresa Du’s apothecary, as those precious herbs were quite valuable.

Ruo Manni sighed, recalling the various space abilities seen in those time-travel novels. She lamented that, as a reincarnated individual who wasn’t the main character, she might not have such a golden finger.

However, she quickly shook off those scattered thoughts. Ruo Manni had never been greedy; the fact that she had such excellent potential for cultivation after her rebirth was already a substantial advantage, and she felt very content.

As long as a person has the ability, getting what they want is easy. Relying on external factors to passively obtain things is nothing compared to earning them through one’s own capabilities. Conversely, if one lacks ability, possessing treasures can become a curse rather than a blessing.

But then, Ruo Manni remembered something and instinctively touched her neck, where it was still empty.

When she was reborn, things were too chaotic, and it wasn’t until days later that she realized the jade pendant, which the original owner always wore, was missing. The chain had fallen into the nutrient solution of the holographic game chamber, but no matter how hard she looked, the pendant was nowhere to be found, as if it had vanished into thin air.

This pendant wasn’t an ordinary accessory; it contained a small space. Previously, Lin Kexin’s soul had been trapped in this small space within the pendant.

Recalling the small space inside the pendant, Ruo Manni suddenly felt a wave of fluctuation around her, and she realized she had returned to the familiar space of the pendant.

What was happening? Was the pendant space extracting her soul again, turning her back into a wisp of spirit?

Ruo Manni was startled and exclaimed, “I want to get out…”

As she shouted those words, images of the meditation room she had been in recently flooded her mind. Suddenly, she felt the space around her shift, and she found herself in her home’s meditation room.

Ruo Manni pinched her face hard, and the pain confirmed that she hadn’t left her body; she was indeed in the meditation room.

Letting out a long breath, she recalled her earlier panic when she had just thought of the pendant space. She had been in the adjacent herb room just before that.

After a moment of daze, she finally calmed down, realizing how frightening that had been. She had thought she’d exited her body and returned to the pendant, but… she had physically entered that pendant space earlier.

Reflecting on the toxic narratives she had read before, she hesitated but ultimately felt a stronger desire than fear and attempted to mentally communicate with the pendant space.

To her surprise, she instantly found herself back in the pendant space. In a moment of panic, she tried to will herself out, and just like that, she was back in the outside world.

After a brief moment of shock, Ruo Manni finally understood what was happening. With a huge sigh of relief, her fear turned into joy; this was surely the golden finger the gods of fate had granted her for her rebirth.

Now that she understood, Ruo Manni felt no more fear. She re-entered the pendant space and carefully examined the small area she had “lived” in for decades.

It was just about the size of two basketball courts, with barren, parched land and no spirit springs, spirit flowers, or herbs. For humans in the interstellar age, possessing a space device, such an ordinary small space wasn’t considered a treasure.

However, having this small space made Ruo Manni very happy and content. It was a place where she could survive, and for someone who always felt unsafe, it was the best insurance. With this backup, she immediately felt a sense of security.

Moreover, with this small space, she could neatly pack away all the herbs from Teresa Du’s pharmacy and some useful items from home.

Still, the pendant space felt empty, and Ruo Manni didn’t want to leave things lying around on the ground.

An idea sparked in her mind as she remembered the outdoor accommodation capsules Teresa Du had purchased. She returned to her bedroom and retrieved two capsules from Teresa Du’s box of valuables, tossing one into the small space.

The accommodation capsule expanded within two minutes into a small two-story building of about thirty square meters.

The first floor had a convenient bathroom, a living room, and one bedroom, while the second floor had two more rooms.

Ruo Manni happily moved bedding from the guest room into the largest room upstairs, making it her future bedroom. The other upstairs room was perfect for storing items from Teresa Du’s pharmacy.

Busy as a bee, Ruo Manni filled the water tank in the bathroom and set up the downstairs room as a kitchen, storing a lot of water. This way, if the opportunity arose, she could have the robotic butler prepare food for her.

Finally, just as the time came for Captain Lin to send someone to pick her up, she had everything ready. She touched her neck, feeling a sense of satisfaction at having her home with her.

The person sent to pick up Ruo Manni was Officer George, which allowed her to learn about the incidents Captain Lin faced because of her yesterday and today.

At this point, the still weak Ruo Manni couldn’t see that crises could also be opportunities; she only felt that she had caused trouble for Captain Lin.

Captain Lin naturally noticed the little girl’s guilt, but political matters were beyond her youthful understanding, and it was too early to discuss them before anything was finalized.

So, Captain Lin simply patted Ruo Manni on the shoulder and changed the subject. “Your Uncle Lin has the ability; these matters are nothing to me. You’ve made a good start at Xuan Gu and gained some attention, but that’s just the beginning. You’ll need to put in more effort moving forward. Being a genius doesn’t guarantee success; it only means you have a higher chance of it.”

Ruo Manni wasn’t really a child; she understood Captain Lin’s kind words of encouragement.
