Chapter 9: Spoiled Nobita
To better describe Nobita's approach, it could be compared to complaining over trivial matters—refusing to take even a single step forward, despite being perfectly capable.
There are times when it's evident that some problems could easily be solved if Nobita simply relied on his own efforts. Yet, he often avoids putting in any work.
Since Doraemon's arrival, he has been striving to help Nobita cultivate the ability to tackle problems independently. However, Nobita often falls short of expectations, relying instead on Doraemon as his safety net.
This over-reliance explains why Nobita can so casually beg Doraemon for help whenever he faces difficulties, without a second thought.
What frustrates Doraemon the most is his inability to say no when Nobita resorts to pestering. It's exasperating to even think about sometimes.
Swish!
The door to the room suddenly swung open as Nobita burst in, panting heavily. Just as he was about to pour out his woes to Doraemon, his eyes landed on the refreshments and comic books spread out in front of him.
"Wow! Doraemon, you're unbelievable! You're having an afternoon snack all by yourself? You didn't even wait for me to come back so we could eat together! How sneaky!"
Without hesitation, Nobita walked over to Doraemon, dropped to the floor, grabbed a dorayaki from the plate, and stuffed it into his mouth.
"How can you say that? I bought this with my hard-earned pocket money… Ah, never mind. Nobita, what's wrong this time?"
Doraemon sighed and explained himself out of habit, though he realized there was little point in doing so. With a resigned expression, he finally turned his attention to Nobita, curious about the problem that had made him so upset.
It was clear that, despite everything, Doraemon truly cared for Nobita. Perhaps it was this unconditional care that gave Nobita such confidence in using Doraemon as his shield. Whatever the issue, Doraemon was always Nobita's first solution.
Cough!
Nobita suddenly choked on the dorayaki, having eaten it too quickly. After hurriedly sipping some juice and beating his chest to recover, he began recounting the events at school that had upset him.
Doraemon, sitting cross-legged across from him, listened with a mix of helplessness and patience. Despite everything, he was always there for Nobita, ready to hear him out.
In reality, there wasn't a long story. Nobita only chose the more important details to share, so he quickly recounted everything.
"So that's what happened. There's a new international transfer student in your class, Nobita. That's really rare," Doraemon said, crossing his arms and nodding seriously.
It was clear that, in Doraemon's eyes, the arrival of an international transfer student was indeed something uncommon.
"Ahh! Doraemon, after listening to me this whole time, did you even catch the important part? Pay attention to what I'm saying!"
Doraemon's first response had been a comment on the new student's background and origin, which only made Nobita more frustrated.
In a fit of exasperation, Nobita stood up, grabbed Doraemon's big blue head with both hands, and began shaking it, pleading for attention.
"Okay, okay, Nobita, stop shaking! My head's about to spin!"
"Don't just focus on his background! Doraemon, are you even listening? I'm telling you that the new transfer student, Ashton, on his very first day, invited Shizuka to go shopping after school!"
"And get this—Shizuka actually agreed! She even told me to go home early to do my homework instead of walking home with me!"
As Nobita spoke, his voice grew more emotional, and his frustration mounted. He almost seemed on the verge of tears.
In the past, even when Shizuka turned him down for unreasonable requests, she would never refuse simple invitations like reading comics together after school.
But today, she had chosen to go shopping with Ashton, a new student, and that felt unacceptable to Nobita.
It felt as if his favorite toy had been suddenly snatched away by a stranger—someone he barely knew, or even disliked.
Though it might seem strange to compare Shizuka to a toy, in Nobita's naive mind, Shizuka was supposed to be his future bride, and no one else should be allowed to get close to her like that.
So when Shizuka declined his invitation to spend time together and chose Ashton instead, Nobita's heart broke.
"Shizuka's right, you know. This is for your own good. If you don't finish your homework, you could end up standing in the hallway as punishment tomorrow."
"Doraemon!!! Is this really the time for that? If you don't do something, Shizuka will be taken away by someone else!"
Nobita's voice became more desperate as he raised his fist in protest.
"Alright, alright, I get it."
"Listen, Nobita, you don't have to get so worked up. This Ashton has only just met Shizuka. Maybe he's just asking her for help with directions."
"And didn't we confirm before, with the time-lapse TV, that Shizuka is your future bride?"
Doraemon tried to calm him down, though he could tell Nobita's worries hadn't been soothed.
"But... what if the future changes?"
Nobita's voice trailed off, still anxious. He couldn't shake the image of Ashton fitting in so easily with Shizuka and their classmates.
The way Ashton and Shizuka interacted made it seem like they had known each other for much longer than just one day.
Nobita had been classmates with Shizuka for years, yet Ashton was already so familiar with her. It made Nobita feel threatened and uneasy.
"Hmm... You're right..."
Doraemon muttered to himself, but Nobita heard him clearly.
"Ahhh!!! I don't care!!! Doraemon! You have to help me this time...!"
"My future happiness depends on you!"
Hearing Doraemon's words had caused Nobita to lose his composure completely. His emotional defense shattered.
"Okay, okay, stop crying. What do you want me to do?"
Doraemon couldn't handle Nobita's tearful antics anymore. He knew how effective this method was, but it still made him feel conflicted.
"Just help me! Bring out some props and teach that transfer student a lesson! I need to make him look bad in front of Shizuka!"
After much circling around the issue, Nobita finally revealed his true goal—he wanted to use Doraemon's props to sabotage Ashton's relationship with Shizuka.
How dare Ashton get so close to Shizuka so quickly? Nobita couldn't stand it.
"No, no!"
"Nobita, he's just new to your class. You can't go around using props to prank him on the first day!"
"If it were something else, I might help, but not this. I won't let you do something like this."
Doraemon crossed his arms and pouted, standing firm.
Doraemon had principles, and there were things he could and couldn't help with. He understood that his mission was to help Nobita, but some boundaries couldn't be crossed.
He had come from the 22nd century, armed with magical props, but he couldn't let that power be used for mischief. Otherwise, things would spiral out of control.
"Why is this happening..."
"Doraemon, if you don't help me, no one else will! Shizuka might become someone else's bride! What do I do...!!!"
Nobita turned into a fountain of tears as Doraemon refused to help. He didn't even care about the dorayaki or juice anymore.
He lay at Doraemon's feet, clinging to his legs, sobbing uncontrollably.
"Wuwuwu... I'm so pitiful... If this goes on, I'll lose my happiness and can't do anything about it..."
It was clear that Nobita had mastered the art of crying and acting spoiled. If you didn't know him well, you'd probably feel sorry for him, as he looked utterly miserable.
"Hey, Nobita, you always do this when things get tough. Seriously, can you be stronger? You make it so hard for me to deal with you."
Seeing Nobita crying like this, Doraemon felt a twinge of sympathy, even though he knew this was a regular tactic.
Still, he couldn't bear to see him so distressed.
"Okay, okay, get up. Stop crying, I'll find a way to help you."
Doraemon sighed in defeat.
"Really? You're not lying, Doraemon?"
Nobita's eyes lit up immediately, wiping his tears as he looked at Doraemon, eager for reassurance.
If anyone had been watching, they would have been amazed at how quickly Nobita's emotions shifted. One moment, he was crying his eyes out, and the next, he was hopeful again.
Nobita's ability to turn his emotions on and off like a faucet was nothing short of impressive.
If there were a level for being spoiled, Nobita would undoubtedly be a master.
