Chapter 222: Chapter 222 – Overwork
Ever since Takahashi stopped Yukio's class from continuing to pull in orders, the members of Yukio's class had completely let loose, spending their days playing around while still earning points, making the other classes envious to the point of frustration.
The various tasks were all pretty much the same. Once the students became familiar with the overall workflow, everyone could handle their duties competently. The core strategies for increasing income across the different groups were also slowly being implemented.
Today was the day of the big event at the food street. Yukio, who had already promised Ichinose he would attend, traveled with his classmates who wanted to join in the fun, taking a bus to the food street.
When they arrived, they found that Kiriyama and the other second-year students had done a great job. The Saturday event was lively and vibrant, attracting a large crowd.
As Yukio glanced at the entrance, he responded to a message from Shiina on his phone, telling her that he had arrived. Shiina, in turn, wished him a good time.
When Ichinose had invited Yukio, Shiina had been there as well. However, Shiina didn't want to come, partly because she disliked crowded places and partly due to her personal reasons—put simply, she wasn't fond of street food and was a bit of a picky eater.
Even though she wasn't coming, Shiina didn't interfere with Yukio's plans, even if there was a potential "threat" like Ichinose involved. In fact, she encouraged him to come and have fun, continuing with the original plan to instill a sense of guilt.
And it was working. At least now, Yukio genuinely felt guilty towards Shiina, thinking that he definitely needed to make it up to her later.
"Yukio-kun." Ichinose waved her hand as she approached him from the food street, though what caught Yukio's attention was that Ichinose's dark circles seemed to have deepened a bit.
"For such a big event, it looks like you haven't been getting enough rest," Yukio pointed out, gesturing to his own under-eye area.
Some girls dislike having their facial flaws pointed out and might get upset, but Ichinose clearly wasn't one of them. She responded naturally with a bright smile, saying, "It's because this event is so big."
"During the final preparation phase yesterday, we stayed back to help with a lot of things. It was a bit tiring, but I still got enough sleep."
"Let's not talk about that now. Come on, Yukio-kun, and everyone else, let's head inside. By the way, you haven't eaten yet, have you? It would be such a waste if you had eaten before coming here because there are so many delicious foods here."
Yukio smiled and followed along, while Ishizaki, beside him, patted his own belly with a hearty laugh. "How could we? We knew we were coming to a food street, so we made sure to leave room! I even skipped breakfast on purpose."
"Eh?" Ichinose was a bit taken aback. This Ishizaki guy was really going all out, huh?
She blinked a few times and then couldn't help but laugh. "Uh, you should still eat breakfast, though. Otherwise, you might end up with a stomachache, Ishizaki-kun."
After some light-hearted banter, Ichinose led the group into the food street. It was as if she was at home, and she proudly introduced the various shops along the way. "Over there is Granny Futaba's okonomiyaki shop. The grilling is just right, making it crispy and especially fragrant."
"And over there is Grandpa Yamazaki's wagashi shop. The old man has been making sweets his whole life, and his skill is unmatched. Every dessert has an incredibly rich and authentic taste."
"Ah, that's Aunt Tomokuchi's crab cake stall. It's really popular, and the ingredients are super fresh. The crabs are freshly killed every day, making each bite sweet and savory. Shibata-kun is over there; he actually learned how to handle crabs."
Yukio and the others following behind Ichinose were all staring at her as if she were a marvel. Is this what a serious student participating in a task looks like? She was so well-versed in the details of the task.
The group exchanged glances, looking at one another in disbelief. Nomura lowered his voice, feeling a bit embarrassed that Ichinose might overhear. "Hey, Ishizaki, do you know how many steps there are in the process at Takahashi's yukata workshop?"
"Uh?" Ishizaki stammered, his words catching in his throat. "Wasn't it... didn't Mr. Takahashi explain it on the first day we arrived?"
"Idiot," Kaneda sighed, pressing his hand to his forehead. "It wasn't Mr. Takahashi who explained it; it was during a conversation between President Horikita and Mr. Takahashi."
Komiya quietly chimed in from the side, "Don't call others dumb. Even if President Horikita mentioned it, how much do you actually remember, Kaneda?"
Kaneda chose to remain silent. Damn it, after all these days of working on the task, they hadn't even stepped inside Takahashi's yukata workshop. Who on earth could remember how many steps there are in the process?
Ichinose, unaware of their whispered conversation, continued enthusiastically introducing everyone to the various shops, as if she was intimately familiar with each one.
Actually, there was no need for explanations. Just seeing Ichinose's popularity on the food street made it clear.
Every time they passed by, there would always be uncles, aunts, grandpas, and grandmas greeting her warmly: "Ichinose, are you bringing your classmates here to have fun?"
"Honami-chan, don't overwork yourself. Take a break today and have some fun with your friends."
Ichinose responded to their greetings with her warmest smile. Even when Ishizaki and the others went to buy snacks, the shopkeepers, upon seeing Ichinose, would smile and refuse to take their money.
This truly astonished Ishizaki and the others. Just how popular was Ichinose in this place?
Yukio, on the other hand, wasn't surprised at all. A girl as bright and cheerful as Ichinose would naturally receive the best treatment in a food street run by older folks.
Everyone bought plenty of snacks, and Yukio even took out the class funds he'd extorted from other classes, suggesting that they all have a meal at the fugu restaurant deep within the food street. This made everyone incredibly happy.
Afterward, they all gathered with their snacks at the large stage in the open area of the food street, enjoying the performances organized by Kiriyama and the other second-year students.
There were musical performances, theatrical performances, and even a host organizing activities, like having the audience come on stage to play rock-paper-scissors to win various prizes.
Yukio just watched casually, not particularly interested in participating. The prizes were mainly things like rice, cooking oil, toilet paper, and food vouchers, none of which excited him.
Ichinose, on the other hand, took the initiative to help the second-year students from Kiriyama's group, apologizing to Yukio and the others before going off to help carry boxes of toilet paper onto the stage.
Watching Ichinose run up and down the stage, carrying prizes as she went, Ishizaki and the others couldn't help but admire her. Ichinose was truly amazing, even helping out her competitors like this.
If it were their class in this situation, they might have dismantled the stage as soon as Kiriyama finished setting it up.
While Ishizaki and the others were simply enjoying the spectacle, Yukio keenly noticed something off. Why was Ichinose wobbling while carrying items onto the stage, as if she were drunk?
He walked over to ask what was going on, only to see Ichinose stumble slightly, losing her grip on the box, and nearly falling off the stage.
Luckily, Yukio had already walked over and was able to catch Ichinose just in time, preventing her from hitting the ground. Surrounding students, especially those from Ichinose's class, quickly ran over. "Ichinose, what's wrong?"
Seeing Ichinose's eyelids drooping from exhaustion, Yukio first placed his hand on her forehead to check her temperature. It didn't seem like she was sick. "She's just exhausted. How busy has she been? Aren't you all in the same class? Why didn't anyone help share the load?"
