Chapter 122: Chapter 122: Demons

Frieren: "Wait, can we bring Sui and Shizuka too? I want to see otherworldly elves and magic. I didn't have time to chat with Sui last time."

Sui: "I'm still on my journey, but three hours is fine for me."

Shizue Izawa: "I'm fine with it too."

Rei Ao: "I'll add one more person if that's okay?"

Frieren: "Doesn't bother me."

Rei Ao: "Alright, Megumi, are you free?"

Rei Ao: "I thought I'd let you see more of the world and maybe find a chance to help you grow."

Mugumi Kato: "I'm free!"

But to Rei Ao's surprise, another person sent him a private message.

Utaha Kasumigaoka: "Um... Rei Ao-kun, is it dangerous to cross into another world?"

"Hm?"

Rei Ao raised an eyebrow. At this timing, he doubted it was concern for him.

Rei Ao: "Are you curious to try it yourself?"

Utaha Kasumigaoka: "Ah… you noticed, haha."

In her apartment, Utaha awkwardly tapped her toes against the floor.

She was genuinely curious about what another world looked like and thought it might inspire her creative writing. Initially, it was just a casual thought to send the message, but she didn't expect him to see through her immediately.

Rei Ao followed up with another private message.

Rei Ao: "If you want to experience it, I can take you along for a look."

Utaha Kasumigaoka: "Mm… thank you."

With things laid bare, Utaha decided to admit it.

Rei Ao: @Frieren, add one more person.

Frieren: "Who?"

Rei Ao: "Utaha Kasumigaoka, another sub-group member."

"..."

In the kitchen, Mai froze mid-wash.

Though she'd only met Utaha a few times, the latter left a strong impression.

After all, her first time wasn't just on a rooftop but also happened in Utaha Kasumigaoka's company.

It was something Mai probably couldn't forget her whole life.

Stepping out of the kitchen, she glanced around and realized Rei Ao was nowhere to be seen.

"Eh? Where did Rei Ao go?"

Vignette noticed his absence as well.

Mai quickly covered, "Oh, nothing. He just stepped out for a bit."

"Oh, okay."

...

"This is... a forest?"

After accepting Rei Ao's request for cross-dimensional travel, Utaha Kasumigaoka felt no significant change, but in the blink of an eye, her surroundings were completely different.

Looking around, there was no trace of her apartment.

The ground was rich with the scent of earth, surrounded by dense shrubs and towering trees.

Gone were the steel and concrete—only pure nature remained.

"Welcome."

A calm, cold voice broke the silence.

It belonged to Frieren, a striking elf with pale skin and an expression that revealed little emotion.

Sui stared at her, intrigued.

During their last adventure in Akame's world, Sui hadn't had the chance to interact with others, let alone observe Frieren closely.

Upon closer inspection, Frieren bore the features of an elf, but she seemed more emotionally distant than any elf Sui had encountered.

Shizue Izawa stretched out her hand, summoning flames from thin air.

She furrowed her brow. "I seem to be able to use magic in this world too, but I can't feel the presence of magic essence."

Frieren tilted her head slightly and tapped her fingers. Flames of her own rose, yet they weren't formed from the magic essence Shizuka was familiar with.

"This world has no such thing as magic essence—only mana for casting magic," Frieren explained.

Rei Ao interjected, "No need to overthink it. Mana, magic essence—they're just different names for energy."

He demonstrated, manipulating two energy spheres in his hands—one of mana and one of magic essence.

"These different worlds might use different energy sources, but they can be converted between each other."

Under his control, the two energy spheres visibly flowed and transformed between mana and magic essence.

The process seemed natural, almost instinctive.

"I see." Frieren's eyes lit up with curiosity.

"Could you show me more of your abilities and magic?"

"Of course, that's the point of this exchange," Rei Ao agreed, before turning to Sui, Mugumi Kato, and Utaha Kasumigaoka.

"Sui, take them for a walk around first."

"Sure, I'll protect them," Sui replied confidently.

Rei Ao trusted her completely. At level 31, Sui was already slightly stronger than Frieren.

Once the trio had departed, Frieren wasted no time.

"Before, you displayed Freezing and Fire Dragon powers. Do you have anything else? I feel like there's something deeply alluring in your body."

"Alluring?" Rei Ao raised an eyebrow, already suspecting what she meant.

"Are you talking about… this?"

Without further delay, his entire body shimmered in pure silver, and his Elven King form emerged without warning.

The moment Frieren's golden eyes met his, she froze, her hand involuntarily reaching toward him.

It was as if his presence exuded a natural magnetism, an irresistible aura meant to draw elves closer.

Rei Ao quickly withdrew his power.

"Frieren, are you okay?" he asked, snapping her out of her trance.

"I... I'm not sure..."

Frieren looked at her outstretched hand and frowned in contemplation.

She couldn't explain it. There had been an inexplicable compulsion urging her closer.

Rei Ao was equally taken aback.

Sui had never reacted this way to his Elven King form. Was this a difference between elves of different worlds?

In Sui's world, elves had a connection to nature but no such reaction.

But the elves of Frieren's world seemed colder, their demeanor often tinged with aloofness and lethargy.

Perhaps these differences influenced their reactions.

After a moment of reflection, Frieren suppressed her earlier confusion. Her delicate face curved into a rare, almost self-deprecating smile.

"Well then, let's begin experimenting with magic!"

...

"This really is another world…"

Under Sui's watchful eye, Utaha Kasumigaoka wandered the forest, still amazed.

Every plant, every tree, every detail felt so real.

Even the small creatures occasionally appearing had distinct characteristics different from animals she knew.

It wasn't the existence of another world that shocked her but the idea that she was personally experiencing something so extraordinary.

Beside her, Mugumi Kato remained remarkably calm.

Utaha, aware of Megumi's relationship with Rei Ao, decided to probe her thoughts.

"Mugumi Kato, aren't you at least a bit surprised?"

Megumi glanced at her and responded in her usual flat tone, "Oh, I'm always surprised every time I travel to another world."

"...Huh?"

Utaha felt baffled. Megumi's emotionless face and monotone voice betrayed no hint of surprise.

Assuming Megumi was just being polite, Utaha didn't press further.

As for Sui, Utaha didn't know how to start a conversation with her either.

For a moment, silence hung in the air.

Utaha turned her attention back to the scenery, appreciating the beauty of this strange new world.

Until—

"Help… someone… help me…"

A weak female voice echoed from nearby.

"Did you hear that? It sounds like someone's calling for help."

Utaha stopped in her tracks, looking to the others.

Megumi pointed in a direction. "Over there."

Sui frowned. "Let's check it out."

The three of them moved toward the voice, eventually finding a girl in tattered burlap clothing leaning against a tree. She was clutching her arm, which was covered in blood.

"Blood!"

Utaha's eyes widened in alarm.

Bright red blood dripped from between the girl's fingers.

Utaha rushed to examine her injury, but Sui drew her sword, her expression cautious.

Just as Sui prepared to speak, Megumi raised her hand, silently stopping her.

"...?"

Sui looked puzzled, but Megumi merely shook her head.

Deciding to trust Megumi's judgment, Sui held her position, though she stayed alert.

"How are you? Let me see your wound," Utaha said anxiously as she knelt beside the girl.

"Mommy…"

The girl's voice trembled as she looked at Utaha, calling her "Mommy."

The single word struck a chord in Utaha's heart.

Her sympathy surged, imagining the plight of a child injured and alone in the forest.

Her eyes fell to the gaping wound, and she quickly tore a strip from her own skirt to use as a bandage.

But as she bent her head down—

A crimson glint flickered in the girl's eyes.

Her mouth opened, revealing rows of shark-like teeth as she moved toward Utaha's neck.

'Whoosh!'

A sharp whistling sound tore through the air.

The girl froze.

A moment later—

'Bang!'

Utaha felt something warm and wet splatter over her body.

Looking up in a daze, she was greeted by the sight of a headless body.

The girl's head had exploded, leaving her neck a bloody stump.

An ice shard was embedded in the tree behind her.

"Ah…"

Utaha froze, her mouth agape, unable to scream.

Even her instinct to gag or retch seemed paralyzed by shock.

"I killed her."

Rei Ao's voice cut through the silence.

Turning her head slowly, Utaha met his gaze, her wide, terrified eyes glistening with confusion.

He had killed that child.

"Why…"

Her trembling voice barely escaped her lips.

Before Rei Ao could answer, Frieren stepped forward, her staff raised.

"That wasn't a child. It was a man-eating demon," Frieren said firmly.

She lowered her staff, pointing it at the creature's twitching hand.

A ray of light pierced through its chest, shattering its heart.

The creature froze, then its body dissolved into glimmering particles, disappearing completely.

The bizarre scene helped restore some of Utaha's sanity.

It became clear this wasn't the death of a normal human. There was no body left behind.

Rei Ao extended his hand to Utaha.

"..."

Still trembling, she hesitated before placing her hand in his.

Rei Ao pulled her to her feet, steadying her as her legs threatened to give out.

Once she was upright, he placed a steadying hand on her shoulder and explained, "As Frieren said, that wasn't a human child—it was a man-eating demon."

"…A man-eating demon?"

Utaha whispered, struggling to process the information.

"Not just that."

Rei Ao continued, "The wound and weakness it showed you? It was all an act to lure you closer, to lower your guard."

Frieren elaborated, "Demonic beings like this one mimic human appearances and behaviors to hunt. They cry for help, pretend to be vulnerable, and say words like 'Mommy' to manipulate emotions. But it's all an act, designed solely to kill."

She went on to explain that demons lacked human traits like family bonds or genuine emotions. Everything they did was a mimicry aimed at capturing prey.

Even their language was just another tool of deception. Negotiating with them was utterly pointless.

Demons didn't need to consume humans to survive—but they preferred to, reveling in the hunt.

Frieren's knowledge came from countless encounters and battles with demons.

And concluded that she will eradicate them all.
