Chapter 12: chapter 12
The next day, after school, David was standing in front of a fast-food restaurant.
"Hi, I'm looking for the manager. I'm here about the job opening," David said.
While waiting for the manager, he noticed a girl who had just walked in. "Hey, um… Tory, right?" David asked.
"Yeah, you're the guy who wiped the floor with Robby. You never told me your name," Tory said, offering a handshake.
"David, my name's David. And how are you, Tory? I hope you're doing well," David replied.
"Yeah, this is my workplace—or one of them, anyway," Tory said.
"What a coincidence. I'm actually here looking for a job. How about, once I get it, I walk you home? I know you can handle yourself, but having some company never hurts," David offered.
"I don't need it, but if you get the job, I'll think about it," Tory replied.
David walked toward the manager, who had just arrived, and followed him into his office. They had a conversation about David's previous work experience. The manager told him that, given his record, if he got into any fight or argument with anyone at the restaurant, he'd be fired immediately.
"Understood, sir. You'll only hear good things from me," David said, standing up straight and shaking the manager's hand.
"Good. You'll start by washing dishes in the kitchen. If your performance is good after a week, I'll promote you to server. Don't disappoint me, kid. By the way, there's a uniform in the locker room—it's a couple of sizes too big, but it'll work," the manager said.
David left the office and went to the locker room to put on his new uniform, along with an apron and latex gloves. "Alright, bacteria and germs, it's time to annihilate you and make these plates shine!" David said as he cleaned the dishes at top speed without breaking any.
After his shift ended, David waited outside for Tory. He was playing on his phone when he heard a voice.
"So, the guy cleaning the dishes like a machine was you, huh? The legendary dishwasher is you," Tory said, imitating an old martial arts master from the movies.
"Of course! They call me the Dragon Cleaner. All I need now is my team of the Five Furious Cleaners. Maybe you can be my Tigress, who knows," David joked.
"Sure, sure, Dragon Cleaner. Alright, let's get going before I'm late for my other job," Tory said, taking the lead.
"Alright, Tigress. Since I don't have a car, we'll use the legendary Legs of a Thousand Paths," David replied.
"So, Tory, how's everything? And I don't mean karate or anything like that. I mean you—rarely do I meet someone our age with two jobs," David asked.
"At home, someone has to work, you know? I don't have the opportunities others do, and I have to take care of my mom and brother," Tory said.
"You're strong, Tory. Not everyone would work that hard. That's amazing. Even though we've just met, if you ever need advice, someone to help bury a body, or even fix your plumbing at home, call me, and I'll help you," David said.
"Alright, alright, that's a bit too sentimental. But I appreciate your words, David. I'll look for you when things get tough—or if I need help burying a body," Tory teased.
"That was a joke, but if you do call me for that, the first thing I'll do is help you disappear from the country. By the way, looks like we've arrived," David said.
"Alright, Dragon Cleaner. See you tomorrow, and thanks for walking me home," Tory said as she walked toward the entrance of her other job. Just before going through the revolving door, she ran back to David. "I never gave you my number."
"Crap, I almost forgot," David said.
After exchanging numbers, David headed home, where he had a phone call with his mom. She told him his dad was nearly bankrupt because of gambling. David just mentioned it was expected—his dad couldn't control himself when it came to betting. With that, he went to bed.
