Cobra Kai: New life

Chapter 7: chapter 7

A few days after his last impromptu meeting with Sam and Miguel, David stood in front of Miyagi-Do. From outside, he could hear the sounds of training: sharp kiais, the rhythmic thuds of strikes on pads, and the occasional words of encouragement from the instructors.

"Looks like you're blending two styles here," David said as he stepped inside, waving to the group.

Miguel noticed him and walked over with Sam.

"Hey, if it isn't David! How's it going, man?" Miguel said with a smile.

"You know, I thought I'd stop by to see how you train. I did a little research, and your senseis aren't just anyone—they're both champions in their day. Learning from both Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang sounds like fun," David replied, waving at the other students.

Sam and Miguel exchanged surprised glances. They hadn't expected David to know so much about their senseis.

"Well, since you already met Sensei Lawrence and Sensei LaRusso last time you were here, come on in. Join the group," Sam said, motioning for him to step closer to the dojo.

As David walked further in, Johnny Lawrence approached him, sizing him up.

"So, you're the guy who took Robby down, huh?" Johnny said with a grin, crossing his arms.

David raised an eyebrow, slightly amused.

"Word travels fast, doesn't it?"

Johnny chuckled.

"Robby doesn't go down easily. You must have something good."

Daniel LaRusso, standing nearby, joined the conversation.

"We've heard quite a bit about you, David. Miguel says you practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. How about showing us what you've got?"

David smiled confidently and shrugged.

"Why not? Sounds fun."

Miguel immediately stepped forward, excited.

"I'll take him on!"

Johnny clapped his hands together.

"Alright, let's see what you guys can do. No hard hits—keep it friendly. And remember, play clean."

The students formed a circle around them, leaving Miguel and David in the center. Sam and the others watched expectantly, while Johnny and Daniel stood to the side to comment on the match.

The Match Begins

Miguel bowed respectfully, and David mirrored the gesture. As soon as the match began, Miguel assumed a classic karate stance, light on his feet, with his fists raised and ready. David, on the other hand, kept his posture relaxed, with his hands low, exuding a quiet confidence that seemed to unsettle Miguel.

"Look at Miguel's stance," Daniel said, nodding approvingly. "Classic karate. Balanced, defensive, and ready to counterattack."

Johnny added, "Yeah, but he's not just defensive. The kid knows how to strike when it counts. Watch this."

Miguel feinted a punch and quickly launched a spinning kick aimed at David's midsection. David fluidly sidestepped, caught Miguel's leg in mid-air, and swept his supporting leg. Miguel landed on his back but quickly rolled to his feet.

"Nice sweep," Johnny remarked. "That's not karate. What do they call that? Grappling?"

"Close," Daniel replied. "That's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. David's staying calm, reading Miguel's movements. He's waiting for a mistake."

Miguel unleashed a series of rapid punches and kicks, forcing David onto the defensive. David blocked and dodged with smooth, deliberate movements.

"David's conserving energy," Daniel observed. "Every move he makes is calculated."

Miguel managed to land a light hit on David's side, but when he tried to follow up, David ducked and closed the distance. In an instant, he grabbed Miguel's arm, pivoted, and brought him down with a flawless hip throw.

The students gasped in awe, and Johnny let out a low whistle.

"Wow, that was clean. This kid's got skills."

On the ground, Miguel tried to escape, but David transitioned smoothly into a side control position, keeping him pinned.

"Look at that control," Daniel said, impressed. "That's what makes BJJ so effective. It's not about brute strength; it's about technique and positioning."

Miguel bridged and rolled, managing to escape and get back on his feet. He smiled, clearly enjoying the challenge.

"You're good," Miguel said, breathing heavily.

"So are you," David replied with a grin.

The two exchanged more strikes, Miguel showcasing his speed and precision, while David relied on his adaptability and grappling expertise. At one point, Miguel attempted another spinning kick, but David ducked and swept him again, this time transitioning into an armbar.

"An armbar?! Is that even legal?" Johnny exclaimed.

Daniel laughed.

"Relax, Johnny. It's just a friendly match. Besides, David's showing restraint. He's not fully applying the lock."

Miguel tapped out, and David immediately released him, helping him to his feet. The students applauded, impressed by the display.

After the Match

Johnny walked over, patting Miguel on the shoulder.

"Good effort, kid. You held your own."

Daniel nodded toward David.

"And you, impressive work. Your style's different, but effective. Ever thought about mixing it with karate?"

David shrugged.

"Maybe. This was fun. You've got a great group here."

Sam stepped closer, smiling.

"You should stick around. You could learn a lot from both dojos."

Miguel, still catching his breath, grinned.

"Yeah, and maybe I can pick up some BJJ tricks from you."

David laughed.

"Only if you teach me some of those flashy kicks."

The group chuckled, the tension dissipating as the atmosphere grew more relaxed. For the first time in a long while, David felt something he hadn't experienced in years: a sense of belonging. Maybe—just maybe—this was a place where he could grow.

"Oh, by the way, who's your master? Or should I say masters? I can tell you're skilled in more than one style," Daniel asked.

"Well, I had a Muay Thai master. He was a bit odd; they called him Apachai. A tall, strong guy who could break solid stone with a single knee strike," David replied with a grin.

"Nah, no way, David. That's impossible," the group responded, laughing in disbelief.
