Chapter 5: CHAPTER FIVE : AWAKENED
Seven tests in different hospitals and clinics, and still the same report: Sammuel was no longer asthmatic.
"I don't understand," Mary said.
"Mom, can we just be grateful for this? Besides, it's past twelve midnight and you need some sleep. You look really stressed," Sammy said, helping his tired mother up from the sofa.
"You don't sound like this is a surprise to you at all, Samuel. You've been asthmatic since you were a child, with no certain hope for you to get better, and all of a sudden, it's all gone?" Mary said with a weak smile.
"I am grateful, but I'm just a little too surprised". She added.
"Just go get some sleep, Mom. We'll talk about this in the morning, okay?" With a nod, Mary finally headed into her room, leaving Sammy alone in the living room to ponder his situation... but he was not alone.
Sigh. "I don't get it," Sammy said, falling into one of the dining chairs when a voice interrupted him.
"Yeah, don't stress it. I was also confused in my time," the voice replied, making Sammy turn back. His gaze met a familiar figure picking its nails on, relaxed on the sofa.
Sammy looked at the doors and noticed they were shut wondering how she didn't notice someone with him.
But when he had a closer look,
"It's you," Sammy said, containing his shock as he got up slowly. "You were in my dream."
"It wasn't a dream," Zara replied, getting up from the sofa with a sigh. "You actually died."
Sammy stood still his gaze fixed in Zara. But even with what was happening at the moment, he wasn't frightened or scared and it also surprised him.
"You were given another chance – a new life, a fresh one, but with the same story, and also a chance to change it.
I'm guessing that explains the sudden disappearance of your illness and the strange things you knew something was off," Sammy said in understanding.
"Yes. You have been chosen as a descendant to wield the power of the Elixir, a godly tool of mass possibilities, even beyond your imagination," Zara explained.
"Whoa, slow down with the words," Sammy replied, placing his hands on his head, closing his eyes. "This is too much to take in at once."
"I understand how you feel, but you can't change anything at this point. Zara explained.
I thought you were dead," Sammy said, walking closer and taking a seat beside him. And what kind of opportunity are you talking about?"
"The power to rewrite your destiny. This life, everything under your choice of words, to be written. Wealth, strength, fame... even omnipotence. That is, if you're ready to and willing to accept it," Zara said.
"I don't even know what to say-
"You are running out of time, kid. You need to awaken your powers and summon the pen.
How? Pen?"
"Yes! Where is it?" Zara asked, making Sammy look in confusion.
"I should have known. You surely don't know how to summon it," Zara replied in obvious disappointment.
"Even money will be the least of your worries if you have what I'm telling you about,"
"You sound crazy to me. I don't even know why I'm talking to you," Sammy said, closing his eyes in stress. This is just one of the crazy dreams."
"You're the one talking to a ghost from your dreams, not me," Zara replied, as silence followed.
Letting out a deep breath, Sammy turned to head up to his room. His footsteps echoed in the living room as he headed for the stairs.
"Do you want your dad back?"
Zara asked, making Sammy stop immediately. A sudden surge of courage and rage filling him instantly.
"I don't joke about things like that."
"I'm not joking either," Zara replied. "If you accept this chance, I get to have a chance to be free once again and possibly have a life again... to live in flesh."
"You're saying you can bring him back?"
"I'm saying you can have the power to. All you need to do is accept it."
For some reason, Sammy wasn't freaking out and had somehow believed all that Zara had been saying, especially after the mention of his father.
"What do I need to do?"
"Now you're talking. All you—"
"And besides," Sammy cut in, "even if I can bring him back like you say, what will people say? Everyone knows he's dead. What if everyone didn't?"
"What if you went back in time and stopped the accident?" Zara replied, as Sammy kept silent, letting the words sink in.
"Is that even possible?"
"Anything with this tool – this power – becomes possible. Trust me, you can have your dad back. You can have the life you've been denied. Look, you're cured thanks to the wish you made with the gods. Imagine how much more you can do by yourself."
"The gods? You mean the dream back at school? The wish," Sammy asked, realization dawning on him.
"Exactly. All you need to do is summon the Elixir, and I can help you. I can help you change your life and help mine too."
Sammy remained silent, his gaze fixed on the ground as questions and choices ran through his mind.
Just then, "Sammy?" Mary spoke, breaking the silence. Sammy turned, looking back to see his mother, then turned back, only to see that Zara was gone the next second.
"Mom."
"Who were you talking to?" Mary asked, looking around.
"I was just... thinking. Why are you up from bed?"
"Water."
"Oh, let me get you some." Sammy districted his mother back to her room.
He closed his door, the lock clicking into place after he assisted his mom back to bed. "Okay, I'm alone now. You can come out," Sammy said, and Zara appeared in response. "So, what were we on?"
"Right now, you need to summon the pen. And I'm going to show you how," Zara replied, moving closer to Sammy.
"Okay, now, you just need to feel it with you. Feel it's in your hands, and it will be. Like you want to write, but you're sure it's in your hands, even when there's nothing in it. So, I just have to imagine it in my hands?"
"You have to believe," Zara said.
Nodding in response, Sammy let out a deep breath and closed his eyes. Focusing his mind, he imagined the pen in his hands, and with a very bright light illuminating the room, a sharp tingle danced around his fingers as the pen materialized between them.
"You did it on your first try," Zara said, his eyes fixed on the glowing pen in Sammy's hands with calm amusement.
"I did it," Sammy said with a smile as the light died down, the pen glowing with inscriptions. Holding the pen up to his face, Sammy observed it. "That felt good."
"Power always feels good," Zara replied with a smile as he began fading away.
"What's happening?" Sammy asked, looking somewhat worried.
"It's okay; it's just my penance. I've done my part. But you can bring me back; just focus. I'm always with you, but this will be our last visible contact."
"What? How do I use it? How do I...?" But before Sammy could complete his sentence, Zara's figure faded into a smoke-like aura that vanished from sight a few seconds later.
As his confusion reached its peak, Sammy was shocked to notice words appearing before him:
