Curse of the Transformation

Chapter 10: Fractures in the Darkness

The tunnels stretched endlessly before them, a labyrinth of cold stone and rusted steel. The group moved in silence, the tension palpable, their footsteps echoing like the whispers of unseen watchers.

Jacob felt it growing—the insidious heat crawling under his skin, the dull thrum in his head becoming a steady drumbeat. He kept his hands clenched, hoping the others wouldn't notice how badly they trembled.

"Stop," the leader said abruptly, raising his hand.

The group froze. In the dim light of the lantern, the leader scanned the corridor ahead, his face etched with suspicion.

"What is it?" Daniel asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

"We're not alone," the leader replied.

---

The faint sound of breathing reached Jacob's ears, soft and irregular, coming from the shadows ahead. He stepped forward, pipe at the ready, his body tense.

"Who's there?" he called out.

A figure shuffled into the lantern's light—a man, disheveled and bloodied, his clothes in tatters. His eyes darted nervously between the group members, and his chest rose and fell in rapid, shallow breaths.

"Please… help me," the man rasped.

"Stay back," the leader ordered, leveling his shotgun.

The man stumbled forward, his hands raised in a gesture of surrender. "I'm not infected," he pleaded. "I swear."

Jacob frowned, his instincts screaming at him to keep his distance. "How did you get down here?"

"I… I was hiding," the man stammered. "From them. The infected. They chased me into the tunnels, but I lost them."

The leader stepped closer, his gaze scrutinizing the man. "What's your name?"

"Elliot," the man replied. "I—I don't want any trouble. I just need somewhere safe."

"Safe?" Daniel muttered bitterly. "There's no such thing anymore."

---

Jacob studied Elliot carefully. There was something off about him—his eyes flickered too quickly, his breathing too erratic. But before Jacob could voice his concerns, a deafening roar echoed through the tunnels, followed by the sound of rapid, heavy footsteps.

"Run!" the leader shouted.

The group bolted down the corridor, the lantern's light bouncing wildly. Behind them, the sound of pursuit grew louder, accompanied by guttural snarls and the scrape of claws on stone.

Jacob risked a glance back and saw them—two infected women, their twisted forms bounding through the darkness. Their glowing eyes locked onto the group like predators closing in on prey.

---

The corridor split into two paths. The leader pointed to the left. "This way!"

But Elliot froze, his body trembling. "No! Not that way! It's a dead end!"

The leader hesitated, his jaw tightening. "You're lying."

"I'm not!" Elliot cried. "I've been down here for days. That path will trap us!"

The infected were closing in fast. Jacob cursed under his breath, his decision already made. "We don't have time for this. Pick a path!"

The leader glared at Elliot, then turned to the group. "Fine. Right it is."

They veered into the right tunnel, the space narrowing around them. The air grew colder, the walls slick with moisture.

Elliot stumbled beside Jacob, his breath coming in ragged gasps. "I told you… I told you this place isn't safe…"

"Shut up and keep moving," Jacob snapped.

---

The tunnel opened into another chamber, smaller than the last. Rusted machinery lined the walls, and puddles of stagnant water reflected the faint lantern light.

The group skidded to a halt, panting and on edge. The snarls of the infected echoed faintly behind them, growing fainter with each passing second.

"Did we lose them?" Daniel asked, his voice shaking.

"Maybe," the leader said, his gaze scanning the room. "But we're not out of danger yet."

Elliot slumped against the wall, his head in his hands. "You don't understand. The tunnels… they're alive. They change. You think you've escaped, but they always bring you back to the same place."

Jacob's patience snapped. He grabbed Elliot by the collar, shoving him against the wall. "Start making sense. What do you mean, the tunnels are alive?"

Elliot's eyes filled with tears, his voice breaking. "There's something down here… something worse than the infected. It's been watching us. It's always watching."

---

Before Jacob could press him further, the air grew heavy, an unnatural stillness settling over the room. The faint hum of electricity filled the space, and the shadows seemed to deepen, writhing as if alive.

"What the hell is happening?" Daniel whispered.

The leader raised his shotgun, his hands steady despite the growing unease. "Stay alert."

The shadows coalesced, taking shape in the center of the room. A figure emerged, tall and imposing, its form shrouded in darkness. Its eyes burned like embers, and its voice echoed like a thousand whispers.

"You dare trespass in my domain," the figure said, its tone both mocking and menacing.

The group recoiled, weapons raised, but the figure didn't move.

"Narkos," Jacob said, his voice low.

The figure's fiery gaze locked onto him. "Ah, you know my name. And yet, you come here like sheep to the slaughter. Foolish."

Jacob's grip on the pipe tightened. "We're not afraid of you."

Narkos chuckled, the sound resonating through the chamber. "Oh, but you should be. The infection is only the beginning. The world as you know it is already mine."

---

Without warning, Narkos raised a hand, and the shadows surged forward, engulfing the group. Jacob felt the air leave his lungs as the darkness wrapped around him, cold and suffocating.

"Your resistance is meaningless," Narkos said. "Embrace the inevitable, or perish."

Jacob's vision blurred, the pounding in his head reaching a crescendo. Somewhere in the back of his mind, a voice whispered—a voice not his own.

*Give in. You are one of us.*

---

As the darkness consumed them, Jacob realized that the battle was no longer just against the infected or Narkos. It was a battle against himself.

> **The shadow has spoken, and the infection within Jacob threatens to take control. Will he succumb, or will he find a way to resist the darkness?**
