….

But knowing didn't mean he could get used to it.

Not yet, anyway.

Unbeknownst to him, there would come a day when not only would he be used to it—he'd become exceptionally good at handling it.

"By the way, System—what's your purpose in binding yourself to me?"

"Or rather… do I have some kind of objective I need to complete? Like one of those novel protagonists who ascend to godhood and blow up Arasaka Tower or something?"

The moment the words left his mouth, they felt off. He immediately rephrased.

[This system does not issue main quests. Everything in Night City is for the host to explore at his own discretion.]

[My only function is to cultivate the host into a qualified… Cyber Legend.]

"???" David blinked. No main quests? That was fine. But… why did the system just hesitate on that last word?Somehow, he got the distinct impression that legend wasn't what it originally intended to say.

Before he could dig any deeper, a soft ding sounded—the door at the end of the corridor unlocking.

Boom! Boom! Boom!

The instant the door opened, blaring music slammed into his ears like a battering ram.

The room ahead was massive—easily several times larger than any of the ones he had passed through before.

Cybernetic modification rigs and monitors cluttered the space, while neon graffiti covered the stained walls.

Empty pizza boxes and discarded soda cans littered the ground, crumpled and forgotten.

And then there were the cybernetic limbs. They hung from the ceiling like butchered meat, swaying slightly under the artificial lighting. A goddamn slaughterhouse.

"Not only do they have terrible taste, but they're absolute slobs." He had known this was how Scavengers operated, but even so, he couldn't resist the urge to complain.

As he ventured deeper, the chaotic noise only grew louder. Finally, at the far end of the room, he saw them. A handful of Scavs, knives, drills, and saws in hand, dancing to the beat like they were at a fucking rave.

And in the center of it all— A woman lay strapped to an operating table, completely naked.

The Scavs were too busy vibing to notice that three of their own had gone missing. Not that it would have mattered. Even if they did notice, they wouldn't care.

Scavengers weren't the type to panic over a few casualties. They'd just recruit more. As disorganized as they were, they still held a monopoly on organ trafficking and second-hand cyberware.

Desperate low-lifes flocked to them in droves. But none of that mattered to David right now. Because the moment he got a good look at the woman's face—

His entire world froze.

"Gloria?!" The woman bound to the surgical table—the one surrounded by those butchers—was, without a doubt, Gloria Martinez.

There was no mistaking it. That face was burned into his memory. And just as he had suspected— David's mother hadn't died from her illness. She had been butchered. Harvested. Just another Scavenger victim.

"…Fucking bastards." A white-hot rage ignited in his chest, burning through his veins. It was irrational, consuming, and completely foreign.

And yet— He didn't resist it. Didn't fight it. Because, in this moment— That fury was all he had. But none of that mattered right now. All he wanted—all he could think about—was letting this rage out.

At that moment, whether the system had relinquished control or simply chosen to stay silent, he didn't know. Didn't care. He dropped the package in his hands. And then… He charged.

"INTRUDER!" Someone shouted, snapping the rest of the Scavs out of their mindless revelry.

The music stopped. Dozens of bloodshot eyes locked onto him— But he was already there. Fueled by the Fourth Calamity Experience Card, he had already closed the distance.

Before the nearest Scavenger could even flinch, his body was already spinning… And then—

BANG!

A brutal spinning kick landed clean against the Scav's head. Bone cracked, the force snapping his neck instantly. His holo-mask flickered wildly before his entire body went flying, slamming into the concrete wall with a sickening crunch.

Web-like cracks spread across the surface. He slid down, limp. Dead. Beyond saving. This was the power of a Fourth Calamity Experience Card?

Jesus. It was terrifying. Compared to the system playing for him, doing it himself felt so much more real.

"I'LL TEAR YOU APART!" Another Scav recovered fast—roaring in rage as he ripped a baseball bat from somewhere. He swung. Fast. But not fast enough.

David sidestepped, weaving past the strike with ease. His fingers curled around something— A surgical scalpel— And with a casual flick, he sent a flash of silver slicing through the air— Straight at the Scav's throat.

"Ha… khh…" The second Scavenger collapsed, clutching his throat as fresh blood painted the already stained floor.

But before he could fully process it— The big guy at the back finally reacted. He raised his assault rifle— And squeezed the trigger.

"RATATATATATA—!" A relentless hail of bullets tore through the air, ricocheting off walls, shattering displays, and embedding themselves deep into concrete pillars.

David barely managed to duck behind a metal cabinet, taking cover as gunfire rained down on his position.

"You dirty bastards—no honor at all!"

Where the hell was the hand-to-hand combat?! How did this suddenly turn into a shootout against a goddamn minor?!

[Recommendation: Utilize hacking techniques for counterattack.]

"Hacking? I don't even have any cyberware installed—how the hell am I supposed to use it?" For a moment, the system said nothing. Yet, in the silence… He could almost feel its disappointment. As if the very air itself was whispering—

[…!]

And then— Without warning— The system took over again. His head tilted ever so slightly, peeking out from cover just as the Scavenger started reloading. For a brief instant, David's eyes flashed blue—

And then—

"BZZT—BZZZZZZT!" The quickhack hit instantly.

A surge of raw cybernetic energy exploded inside the big guy's neural circuits, overloading his cyberware and frying his brain in an instant.

With a thud, his massive frame collapsed like a puppet with its strings cut.

David blinked.

"…Holy shit, this thing's that strong?"
