Dance of the Gods

Chapter 101: The Girl Who Lived and Died Twice

Veronica Navarro born on the 15th of October, 2002 CE, Earth. She was born into an upper class Austrian family, with three older brothers. They were 5, 3 and 2 years older than her.

Her father was the head surgeon of the nearby hospital, while her mother worked as a teacher, but after her second child she became a stay-at-home mom.

Growing up Veronica had a very average life. There was no tragedy or anything special, she just lived like any normal human would. Her grades in school were average at best, except in history and languages where she excelled.

As the years had passed it became obvious that she would continue her studies in that direction. Her parents and siblings supported her, even though they were more science oriented.

Her eldest brother learnt to be a doctor, like their father. The second oldest went a bit different route and became a material engineer. The youngest decided to stay academic. He became a chemist, then began to learn on, trying to get a PhD, which would eventually land him in a teaching position.

Compared to these her ambitions were quite low, but everyone still supported her wholeheartedly.

Veronica's looks were average too. Her dating life was pretty boring. She had a longer relationship in high school, which lasted about two years. That was when she lost her virginity for the first time.

After graduating from high school, she enrolled to a famous university in the next year. It took a bit of convincing to her parents, since it was on the other side of the country, but they eventually agreed.

She went there with two of her bestfriends, who were also her roommates. From there she spent three years studying and partying. Life was truly great and she was carefree.

It was all going fine until that night...

On August 31st she went to bed after drinking a bit with a few of her friends. Veronica Navarro closed her eyes and when September 1st rolled around she was already dead.

Doctors couldn't tell what exactly caused her death. By the later autopsy it showed that her heart just suddenly stopped for no apparent reason. After nearly a hundred doctor read through her file, they decided to book her as a medical mystery.

They said to her parents that she was just unlucky... Or maybe it was fate, since that faithful night something else happened.

An Unknown being moved past the Universe in which Veronica was located, and somehow as she died her soul got abducted and transported to a vastly different Universe.

Her family never found about this though. They mourned Veronica Navarro, and her gravestone still stands inside a cemetery. Eventually everyone moved on, but the loss of their youngest daughter/sibling left a black mark on the family forever.

...

In the year 1283 5th Era, on June 27th in the afternoon Veronica Navarro was born for the second time. This time her family was the exact opposite, they were low class, barely scraping by.

Her brother was 3 years older, when she was born. His name was Tom Navarro, but after their parents' death he changed it to Floyd Hawkins. He was the one who helped deliver her into this world.

Veronica's parents were a married couple in name only. They hadn't had the money to have an actual wedding or a ring for that matter. His father fixed the latter by going into one of the far away city parks, where he had gotten some nice wood. He carved a set of rings for both of them, which they never took down.

Her father worked in 12 or even 16 hour shifts. He was a construction worker in the nearby shipyard. They barely payed enough for them to survive, and after a year of her birth, her mother had to get a part-time job as well.

Luckily Tom was there to take care of her until she was grown enough to take care of herself.

Other than the issues with money, her life went by kind of the same. She was overshadowed by a genius brother, but he and their parents supported her with all their heart.

The years went by quickly and she slowly grew into a teenager. She wasn't as average looking as in her past life, but because of her underfed childhood, she was quite thin and seemingly fragile.

People bullied her in school for it, even though they all look malnourished. Those were the only times when her brother Tom ever got into trouble. But even then the teachers blamed Veronica for those fights, they said she caused it and convinced her perfect brother to do bad things for her.

She spent a lot of her free time either alone or crying. The only people she ever felt safe with was her small family.

When she was only 10 years old, her brother moved away to university. Veronica didn't take it well, but since they would send each other letters each week, it wasn't so bad.

Veronica even took an after school job to pay for the envelopes, paper and ink. The best part of every week was Thursday, because that's when she would run to the post office and get her brother's letter.

He only visited on holidays, which was quite bad, but he took on a tutoring job in university, and he brought home large amounts of money each time.

It took them two years to acquire enough wealth to move out of the crappy little house. They had the lease signed and in a week Veronica would've slept in her own room... Would've...

On a late spring night her house burned down because of an individual. He placed a lock on Veronica's memories and killed her parents. He was about to kidnap her and use her for the ritual, but in that moment something happened that he didn't expect...

As he was about to take Veronica away, she suddenly turned Ethereal and disappeared. It saved her life... For now...

...

On May 21st Veronica Navarro woke up in a hospital bed with no recollection of anything related to her family. The doctors took care of her wounds, but since she had no idea who her family was, she was placed up for adoption.

Luckily just as she was about to enter the housing unity for the Adoption Agency, a nice middle-aged couple walked out of the building with a bit of disappointment.

The woman had a condition, so she couldn't have children of her own, but the married couple really wanted a child. Sadly every kid in this particular facility was kind of unruly, and they just couldn't afford to have a disruptive child, because of their high standing in Hammon's society.

Their child would need to learn how to act like a lady or a gentleman, which had to be thought from a young age.

It might seem bad that they cared about face more than a child's wellbeing, but they had no real choice in this matter.

Strange that this particular couple came to visit this place and leave it in the exact time that Veronica had arrived. It was a weird coincidence, something that people would say that 'it was fate', or 'it was meant to be'.

Utter nonsense. Things happen with no reason all the time. If you look at every strangeness in the world, you will realize that it's full of such lucky encounters and coincidences...

Most things happen without a reason and people still try to find order in all the chaos. But that's their nature, a being of order would never understand a being of chaos, even if it stood right in front of them...

The married couple signed the adoption papers immediately. Veronica hadn't even got the chance to enter the building.

Her shy nature and malnourished look charmed the couple quickly. Also, when they heard about her amnesia and the state she was found in, they felt really sad for her.

She went to the Navarro family as their newly adopted daughter... Even their surnames matched, which was another strange coincidence...

In her next four years she learnt everything there is to know about how to act like a lady, and when she was 16, her parents began bringing her to balls and other social gatherings.

There she made a few 'kind of' friends, but she never quite felt like a part of them. Every waking moment there was a sense of longing in her heart that she couldn't explain.

She was 18 years old, when a man began courting her. He was a wealthy family's heir, but he was also kind of a jerk. It took a bit of time for Veronica to realize that though, and by the time she ended the courting, she lost her virginity the second time.

Luckily people didn't sanctify virginity, they actually done the exact opposite, and it was socially expected for couples to have intimate relations before marriage.

Her life was pretty bleak. Even though she had a lush life that every poor person ––even her–– dreamed of, there was something missing.

She walked into that fateful alley with these feelings...

It was the 1st of September. The day she first died back on Earth...

Veronica had no knowledge of what was about to happen. Her deep longing was asking her, or more like begging her to walk into that alley, and so she did.

She never saw the man that stabbed her, since she was with her back to him. She had no time to scream, or say anything. The special dagger had pierced her heart and in seconds she was already dead.

Tom Navarro, her brother was the one who killed her. He gently laid her body to the ground and in the next moment he broke down in tears, because he recognized the woman.

He reached into his coat's pocket with trembling hands and pulled out a scorched and tattered pink envelope. He kept it after finding it in the fire. The letter, which described Veronica's last week was still inside... Or at least he thought it was her last week...

The body on the ground was hers, much older than the last time he saw her, but it was undoubtedly her sister's. He had no idea how that could've happened, but in that moment he didn't care.

Tom's weeping died down. With hollow eyes he turned towards the sky and screamed in pure sadness, rage, pain, suffering, anguish, but something else as well... Vengeance...

He spent these past nine years looking for the person who murdered his family, but it seemed like he was currently working for that individual.

Tom stared down at his bloody hands, and as Veronica's body dissolved into colors, he swore that the culprit would die by either his, or his sister's hands.

In the year 1304 5th Era, September 1st, on a Monday morning, Veronica Navarro died for a second time, only to be resurrected for the second time.

A lot more happened in the background, hidden from the normal person's eyes. Lots of mystery and scheming, but Veronica didn't know about any of that...

By the time she finished telling her whole story to Michael, the Moon had already disappeared, while on the eastern horizon a gentle glow appeared.

Her head was placed back on Michael's shoulder and they watched the sunrise in comfortable silence.
